Fox really loves canceling shows
mattyrogers-180233 November 2020
It's too bad but not surprising. Fox has always canceled good shows. Look at their track record Dark Angel, Terminator The Sarah Conner Chronicles Family Guy (yes they brought it back but they were still stupid enough to cancel it) Firefly, Dollhouse, Lucifer (than Satan himself for Netflix righting that Wrong) Gifted & Brooklyn Nine Nine. I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that I felt were canceled to soon. Fox never knows what to do with shows that...well if I'm honest any show. The people they pick to run the network are great at green lighting shows that don't fit the status quo of primetime but they never have the know how to promote it or the courage to wait and for those shows to click with fans & critics. They also foolishly play fast and loose with time slots and preempt their new shows for sports with such regularity that it's no wonder when a shows 3 episode's ratings dropped from episode 1 & 2 when the episode if you're lucky aired at midnight and you're DVR caught it but more than likely it didn't air and go figure people didn't watch the 3rd episode when episode 2 aired 6 weeks earlier. Out of sight out of mind. Or in Next's case episode 3 didn't even air on the network but on Hulu. Yet they wonder why viewership isn't what they want. Now has Fox been run by well anyone with a brain they would've aired the episodes during the time when everyone was stuck at home struggling to find something of quality to watch but then that would involve Fox actually having someone who actually knew anything about well anything.

Fun and interesting - Wanting more!!!
scaryoutcome16 October 2020
Only started watching this as there was nothing else that peeked my interest, so I wasn't really expecting much. However, I found myself hooked on the first episode, I hope that we get to see a few twists and turns throughout the rest of the season, as this is the type of TV Show that has the means to-do so.

Not bad, give it a go :)

good although smarter writing would help
SnoopyStyle23 December 2020
Tech entrepreneur Paul LeBlanc (John Slattery) warns the world of the dangers from a future rogue computer AI. It is already here. FBI Special Agent Shea Salazar leads the cybercrime unit. She visits her hospitalized friend Richard Weiss who found a hidden computer code. Apparently, someone or something is attacking him with tech. He had left her a tape addressed to LeBlanc with a somewhat paranoid warning. Paul had been kicked out of his own company after shelving his AI program which his brother Ted as the new CEO has reactivated.

This show got the quick axe after two episodes. It probably deserves better but it never gained a good audience. It does have Slattery leading a good cast in a fun thriller. It runs into the foreseeable problem of an omnipotent enemy opposed by a ragtag team. It's an uneven fight unless the AI is brought down a few notches or some contrivances be introduced. This does both with varying degrees of success. My initial thought is that the show should explain why the AI doesn't simply multiple. It's an easy solution. The AI doesn't want competition and therefore it doesn't want other AIs. My other thought is that the ragtag group needs better camouflage. They should be found much more easily by all the security cameras. Either give them some fictional tech or have the AI hack the camera system later in the show. There needs to be a clearer progression of the AI's abilities. The show gets a rushed conclusion. The characters do a bit too much handwringing about their tactics especially in the last few episodes. There is one character who is forced to do unlikely tasks for the sake of drama. All in all, it's a good network TV thriller although some smarter writing would help.

Decent watch
dieseldemon857 October 2020
I find most new series are a waste of time. The last new series I followed was Longmire. I was intrigued by the premise of the show. I like the quirky, paranoid LeBlanc. The rest of the cast seems to work well, with one glaring issue, maybe my opinion might change over time. The actress playing Agent Salisar isn't convincing and is very wooden with her delivery. It may have been better casting a mature woman late 40's early 50's, inspire confidence in leading a team and could match Leblanc's intelligence.

Almost

Has a long way to go to live up to Person of Interest, but we'll see. Dialogue is muddy at times. Seems like the pilot is rushing to grab you.

Not original, but good updated story to binge
leoalexanderscott2 March 2021
Oustanding cast delivers the characters protrayed from episode to epsiode. The general story isn't original but you will be pulled through this one-season series. Dont worry, NeXt does have a proper conclusion. In my opinion, NeXt was always planned to be one epic season-only story. You will end up wanting to unplug your Smart Home after a few episodes.

Better to refrain from saying "Fact Based"
refordgarry9 October 2020
Watching the first episode, as the popular song goes..... I was thinking to myself this could be Heaven or could be Hell. The sad fact is that so many TV-Series or Mini-Series released in the past months have been absolute stinkers. As far as the pulse-pounding of the description goes, such symptoms ought probably be accompanied by a check of one's blood pressure or a lipid-profile to monitor cholesterol..

Disregard negative reviews, they're all from people who stopped at the pilot
tallard29 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Surprised at the low ranking of a fabulous show, I read all the negative reviews. They only watched the pilot! To be sure, people who write reviews about pilots have no business writing reviews. A great many of those negative pilot-only viewers complained of another woke show. But had they actually watched the entire series, they would have seen that the ex white nationalist is a hero, and the black team member betrayed the team. The trouble with people who only watch a pilot is they have not a clue.

The show is close to fantastic. The intellectual action is taut, as is the physical action, the relationships between the characters are complex and not campy. The dialogue is dry and uncompromising. A couple of the recurring characters are pretty useless, and the photography is probably the worse feature. But the entire show is meant to look gray and bleak, as things were in Equilibrium. This show is also not like POI, it's not about some hero people looking to use AI to save situations, which is more akin to Minority Report, NO, this show is about beating the AI, which of course is impossible. Once Pandora's Box has been opened, specially if it was opened slowly through decades, it cannot be closed intentionally, for now the bureaucrats are intertwined with the AI, only a catastrophic unintentional event can truly reset the clock. But as with all authoritarian forces in society, the Résistance is key. And if 2020 is any indication of willingness to resist in society, we are truly doomed to repeat the past. Don't bother with the negative reviews, they only watched the pilot.

Generic and boring so far..
imdb-773-346676 October 2020
Before you waste your time on "Next", do yourself a huge favour and watch "Person of Interest" instead. It's exactly the same premise, but so much more entertaining with fascinating and lovable characters. At least that's my current advise, only one episode in.

Based solely on the pilot episode, "Next" is just a generic, boring copy, and so full of all the same old cliches that we've seen too many times already. I really can't see how "Next" can evolve into anything but yet another cancelled show. But I'll give it a chance.

I really liked this and looked forward to watching it every week.

It's very disappointing that there is only one series though.

Ha!....Ha!....Ha!... C A N C E L L E D !
rsvp3214 November 2020
Hollywood is just too dense to get it - audiences are completely fed up with the political correctness, social agenda messages, and special interest group pandering. Tip - focus on the plot, and entertaining the viewer, instead!

We just want entertainment! This is why these shows are failing, and audiences are increasingly seeking out "Independent" productions, or even most European contributions. They are far more entertaining than Hollywood's virtue signaling.

For the record, I enjoyed the first episode and had hopes that they clued in, but they didn't.

Good riddance!

What's with the whole white supremacist thing?
jazeboy19 December 2020
They keep mentioning over and over about some guy being a white supremacist. It's really weird. Also they try to turn this into a normal drama rather than make it a technology drama. As usual fox by trying to make it cater to everyone means they cater to no one. Disappointing as it could have been good. Instead the fox writers are trying to ram ideology into a technology story.

Person of Intrest, minus the Interest
ianwakers11 October 2020
It needs to get a lot better than the pilot episode for me to continue watching.

However, given the number of tired cliches they managed to fit into the pilot, I don't think the writers are capable of turning it around.

Go and watch Person of Interest instead. If you've already seen Person of Interest, watch it again.

An odd mix of quality.
fmurdoch10 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is a bit of an odd show. There is a lot to be desired in almost every department - dodgy acting, shoehorned thematic elements, irrelevant soap drama to bulk it out - however, and I'm not saying it's perfect, but someone clearly did their research on AI. Some of the details included are surprisingly good and almost seem out of place given the rest of the quality.

The AI is created by a private company and is isolated from the outside world, but the engineers will converse with it to train it/understand its capabilities. Early in the show we find out that one of the engineers is in financial trouble, and the AI offered him help in exchange for a network connection. This is a completely legit concern - we are absolutely going to restrict an AGI's agency as we are unlikely to be able to predict the conclusions it reaches (if we could, we wouldn't need an AGI would we?) and therefore its goals may be dangerous to us. However, it is a superintelligent AGI, and it will be more than capable of recruiting physical agents to do its bidding if we are not extremely careful.

We see the AI going to extreme efforts to keep its existence hidden, orchestrating "accidents" and interfering in the personal lives of those investigating it. We see it playing dumb to convince people it is not a threat, it employs deception, and sends people on wild goose chases. Over the course of the season, its main goal is to get installed at a powerful NSA facility with specialised hardware where its potential can be unleashed.

Really, the overall plot is quite good, it's just a shame about the rest of the show.

I would also highly recommend the book Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom to anyone interested in humanity's future with AI. It's fascinating and sobering, and I suspect that at least one person involved in this show was familiar with it.

How outside knowledge of the world in advance for Next?
henk32110 October 2020
Looked a promising series. But then: how could NeXt know about the programmer's financial circumstances before a wifi modem was connected? Is a weak point. I will look at the second episode anyway.

I admit I am biased, I love this topic.
zabokluci12 October 2020
I find the AI topic fascinating and I love the Doomsday scenario. I hope this show will intrigue me by "asking" interesting questions instead of trying to answer trivial onces. Since I have only seen the first episode it's a bit early to judge but I hope for the best. I can't wait to see what's next on neXt ;) So far the show has excellent potential. I like it's pace, fast but thorough. I like the acting and the music. Overall I'm very pleased. Maybe it can fill my "Black Mirror" void :)

It could have been great, improve it.
bjpafa22 December 2020
Simplistic, based on urban myths more than real computer science, it has the stuff for a higher complexity, philosophical, dramatic, real frightening version. Which compression algorithm or encription? A simple server farm? Maybe an A. I. into a phone controlling Watson or Amazon would be more credible.... The seven and eighth episodes are getting the thing watchable... As everyone knows it would be a target for appropriation by the powers that be. And, as usual, a storm follows. If you relay on the right side of expertise for a sequel you may reverse it for a good product. Distributive cognitive architecture, some verisimilitude here. Monetization fights itself when one reserves what should have been delivered by packets through the first S. in terms of impact. Get a better sequel. Persist and you can get a hit on two. Congrats for the effort. Good Riddance.

Glad it got canned
onceoffaddress17 November 2020
I said it on their Twitter timeline... you can't build a scifi-action show on sappy mommy-loves-her-booboo drama. 24 tried that with Kim in the first few episodes but rescued the show by ditching her by the 2nd season. Now Manny Coto tries again this time with an even younger child. If you want to write drama, just write drama and target drama fans. If you are going to go tech and scifi then we are here for the tech and the scifi and maybe the action as well... not long, boring bedtime chats between mommy and son, and women talking about the challenges of motherhood and waah waah waahtelse.

Glad to see the back of this.

Excellent, Fun to watch, More please
MuadDib-123412 November 2020
In this sea of reality TV crud its refreshing to finally get something well written, with good acting, an intriguing storyline that from the 1st episode left me wanting more. Two Thumbs up. Bravo! now if FOX will only keep it running and not cancel it. I mean its getting pathetic all the great shows they keep canceling to replace with crap!

This show is good solid entertainment. I hope they bring it back. A few glaring logical errors but the acting is good and the characters are easy to like.

Somewhat predictable AI show with decreasing quality
Xavier_Stone6 October 2020
Pleasantly surprised there aren't any woke characters or social issues yet. The first episode is generally good with the usual background story about rich tech people being shady and smart and 2 steps ahead. The 2nd story adds a little to the main story but not much tension.

The show is billed as serious and exciting and the next big thing but it comes out a bit campy and comical at times. I'm not sure if it's the acting or music or the characters interacting with each other but this doesn't feel like it's going to be any better. Just an average show to fill the time slot.

The more I watch the lower it gets. 6 is now a 5 after seeing eps 2. Probably a trend.

Eps 3, now a 4. The dialogue and bad acting are getting to me and I have to stop here as I don't see it getting any better. Everything is oversimplified in order to create a face pace which drops the quality to the bare minimums.
