The third Power spinoff will outlive the second.
Starz has renewed Power Book III: Raising Kanan for a fifth season, with the pickup for the spinoff starring Mekai Curtis coming as the fourth cycle of the show is in production in New York. Creator Sascha Penn will return as showrunner and exec producer.
The renewal means Raising Kanan will officially outlive Power Book II: Ghost, as the latter series will conclude with its upcoming fourth season. Starz, meanwhile, is developing a Power prequel series, Origins, which would follow Ghost and Tommy. Power Book IV: Force is currently filming its third season in Chicago.
“We know that our fans can’t get enough of Raising Kanan. As the inevitable evolution of this young man into a killer plays out, we knew we had much more backstory to share in this ever-escalating family saga,” said Kathryn Busby, president of originals at Starz.

Starz is heading down south with Uncle Clifford.
The Lionsgate-backed premium cable network has ordered Down in the Valley, a half-hour docuseries exploring the Deep South with P-Valley star Nicco Annan set to host. The six-episode series will launch at a date to be determined this year and explore the people, music, culture and stories of the South, per Starz, as the show will feature everything from strip clubs to sex workshops, rap performances and ancient hoodoo rituals.

Lionsgate currently has distribution deals in place with The Roku Channel and Peacock, but will they survive the studio’s split from one company into two?
The long-promised split of the Lionsgate movie studio from the Starz cable/streaming bundle is getting underway in April. A new report from Deadline indicates that the studio will merge with a special purpose acquisition company (Spac) in April, and will begin trading on the Nasdaq under a different symbol than Starz.
The plan is for Lionsgate to be fully split from Starz by the end of 2024. Once the split is complete, Starz and its properties like “Outlander” and the “Power” franchise would be available for acquisition. The transactions should not have an effect on licensing deals between Lionsgate and streaming partners like Peacock and The Roku Channel. Sign Up $5.99+ / month peacocktv.com

The Grove follows a soldier’s homecoming, which takes a dark turn when he forgets to take an experimental medication, triggering a deadly descent into animalistic madness. What was supposed to be a relaxing lake house getaway with friends becomes a fight for survival, testing the limits of love and sanity.
Alestair Shu (Shelter), Graham Edmonds (S.W.A.T.), influencer Anushka Van Lent (When the Ringlights Dim), Jesus Venegas (Bosch Legacy), and Jolena Wu (Eiknuj) round out the supporting cast.

Tyler Perry has wrapped production on the third movie in his four-picture deal with Amazon MGM Studios, a drama led by “P-Valley” and “Mea Culpa” star Shannon Thornton and “Run The World’s” Tosin Morohunfola.
Perry wrote, directed and produced the film, which recently wrapped filming on location in Colorado and at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta under the working title “Joy Ridge.”
“Amidst the picturesque landscapes of Colorado, Joy (Thornton) finds herself on a holiday trip with a man she envisions as ‘the one,” the film’s official logline reads. “However, her journey takes an enchanting turn as she stumbles upon someone who might just redefine her notions about the life she once knew back home.”
Tyler Perry Studios executives Angi Bones and Will Areu produced the film alongside Perry, who has now announced three of the movies in the four-picture deal he inked with Amazon in November 2022. Last June,...

Despite there being far too many firsts still left to achieve, Black creators have indelibly left their mark on the television landscape for decades.
Just think of names like Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Lee Daniels (“Empire”), and Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), whose series went on to become credited for reviving network television, or writers like Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Donald Glover (“Atlanta”), and Lena Waithe (“The Chi”), who have been able to build their own sort of TV empire with the shows they have written and/or produced.
Even networks like BET, Starz, and MTV still run off of the creative ingenuity of executive producers like Tyler Perry (“Sistas”), Courtney A. Kemp (“Power”), Mona Scott-Young (“Love and Hip Hop”), and even RuPaul (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”).
Often when retelling the story of Black representation on television, there is first acknowledgment of how the writers rooms initially were not reflective of what their casts looked like.

The release of "Drive-Away Dolls" has been marked by most of the trades as the first solo directorial feature of Ethan Coen, following his brother Joel's 2021 outing with "The Tragedy of Macbeth." And sure, it's a catchy headline to acknowledge that one-half of one of cinema's greatest directorial partnerships is stepping out on his own, but that doesn't tell the full story. For one thing, Ethan Coen already made his solo directorial debut with the documentary "Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind." More importantly, "Drive-Away Dolls" may have Coen listed as the solo director, but if you ask him, this was yet another co-directed project, but this time with his wife and longtime Coen Bros. editor, Tricia Cooke.
Cooke first worked with the Coens as an editor on "Miller's Crossing" fresh out of film school, seeking out the job not because they were the esteemed directors of "Blood Simple" and Raising Arizona" fame,...

Study Reveals Most Inclusive Episodic TV Programming; Greg Berlanti, Ava DuVernay Top Producers List
Just in time for Monday’s Emmy awards, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and Dr. Stacy L. Smith, along with the the Adobe Foundation, have unveiled The Inclusion List for episodic programming, which recognizes the most inclusive series in broadcast, cable and streaming.
Following a similar effort for films, the list analyzes on-screen and behind-the-camera personnel from more than 500 programs to determine the 100 most inclusive broadcast and cable series from the 2021-22 broadcast season, as well as streaming series from 2021 to 2023. The project also recognizes 20 producers responsible for the most inclusive content.
“The goal of the Inclusion List is to recognize the stories and storytellers who are taking inclusion seriously and whose content reflects their values,” said Dr. Smith, founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. “With today’s release of the Inclusion List for broadcast/cable and streaming series, we are excited to acknowledge the creative voices championing inclusion across the spectrum of episodic content.

Jamie Foxx made a surprise appearance at the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema and Television: Honoring Black, Latino and Aapi Achievements on Monday night, taking the stage for his first public outing following his sudden hospitalization in April.
Foxx was honored with the Vanguard Award for his acclaimed performance in “The Burial,” from Amazon’s Prime Video. The Oscar and Grammy winner also starred in Netflix’s “They Cloned Tyrone,” which earned him a Gotham Award nomination last month.
Jurnee Smollett presented the award to her “Burial” co-star, saying he’s a “true vanguard, a pioneer who has broken down barriers and inspired generations of artists like myself to be bold, audacious dreamers.”

The long Thanksgiving weekend is a time for family, shopping, and yes, streaming.
For decades, the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, has been the busiest shopping day of the year. Stores across the country offer deals to eager shoppers getting a head start on their Christmas lists. These days, the shopping frenzy extends through the weekend and into what the e-commerce era has dubbed “Cyber Monday.” While no one does e-commerce quite like Amazon, there are a number of streamers getting ahead of the online-retail giant’s Prime Video service with discounts of their own.
While streaming services have spent most of 2023 raising prices, several are currently calling a truce with cost-conscious consumers — for the next few days, at least.
There are a few grinches among the bunch. Anyone looking for a Netflix, Disney+, or Apple TV+ deal is out of luck, we’re told; try Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, and/or Max instead.

There are some big changes at Starz, and it's bad news for four shows.
Variety reported Monday evening that the premium cabler has canceled Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting and is scrapping The Venery of Samantha Bird ahead of its premiere.
Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting lasted for two seasons on the premium cabler, but it seems that the trio didn't have enough interest to sustain additional seasons.
The highest profile of the three shows was Heels, which starred Stephen Amell as Jack Spade, a man who inherited the league from his father.
However, he struggled to keep things running well, leading to plenty of drama across the two seasons.
The cast also included Alexander Ludwig, Chris Bauer, Mary McCormack, Kelli Berglund, Allen Maldonado, and Trey Tucker.
Rounding out the cast were Robby Ramos, Alice Barrett Mitchell, Roxton Garcia, David James Elliott, Joel Murray, and Cm Punk.

The highly-anticipated spin-off “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” premiered Friday on a streaming platform some in the industry would find surprising.
What makes the show stand out — apart from its miniseries format, comprised of three movie-sized episodes spread across three consecutive Fridays (a callback to television events of yore) — is the fact that the prequel, spun off from one of the crown jewels of the Lionsgate portfolio, landed on the NBCUniversal-owned streamer rather than on Starz, Lionsgate’s own premiere cable channel and streaming platform.
The question remains: Why?
The show takes place in New York in the 1970s, but exists in the same shared, blood-splattered universe where, decades later, Keanu Reeves’ John Wick would go on a roaring rampage of revenge.
Basil Iwanyk, founder of Thunder Road Films, the production and financing company behind “John Wick” and “The Continental,” said the decision to move the...

Starz is lowering the price of its annual streaming subscription from $74.99 per year to $69.99 per year.
“As one of the few streaming networks that is profitable, we are always looking for ways to drive success for the business while providing great value to our customers,” Starz domestic networks president Alison Hoffman said in a statement. “Our annual plan subscribers are some of our most valuable customers, so we wanted to find ways to drive more people into the plan and reward our existing customers.”
Existing Starz subscribers will see the price adjustment in their next billing cycle.
The move comes after Starz hiked the price of its monthly subscription from $8.99 to $9.99 per month in June – its first increase since 2016.
In its latest quarter, the Lionsgate-owned premium cable and satellite television network reported a total of 29.4 million global subscribers, a sequential decline of 300,000 customers. When looking at streaming specifically, Starz...

From an improv show about a fake court trial to mockumentaries about public schools and vampires, a sci-fi drama about nuns, the 2023 Emmy nominations were a grab bag full of interesting television, and artisans helped take them even further.
Variety’s Creative Collaborators: The Nominees brunch, hosted by Variety’s senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay, brought together this year’s Emmy-nominated casting directors, designers, editors and other exciting creators to reflect on how they defied tropes and took fresh approaches to TV.
Panel guests included Tom Campbell, EP of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”; Susie Farris, casting director on “Jury Duty”; Chris Gehrt, casting director on “Abbott Elementary”; Yana Gorskaya, editor for “What We Do in The Shadows”; Michael Harte, picture editor for “Still: A Michael J. “Sister Sister” by way of A24?
The studio’s first musical film, “Dicks the Musical,” boasts a star-studded cast with killer original songs and a twist on “Parent Trap.”
In the film set to premiere at TIFF this September, two self-obsessed businessmen (writers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp) discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents, in this riotously funny and depraved musical from comedy icon Larry Charles (“Borat”), also starring Megan Thee Stallion, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Bowen Yang as God.
Lead actors Jackson and Sharp wrote the original songs for the film with Karl Saint Lucy; the film is based on Jackson and Sharps’s two-man show from Upright Citizens Brigade in 2014.
Megan Thee Stallion is also tied to an upcoming Netflix movie directed by Josh Safdie and co-starring Adam Sandler. The rapper previously guest-starred on shows like “Good Girls,...

“Abbott Elementary” star William Stanford Davis joined the choir of actors Friday offering a firsthand look at real residual checks he has received as a working actor. The act was meant to emphasize one of the main issues that led to the SAG-AFTRA strike earlier this month: minuscule residual payments in the age of streaming.
In the video, Davis revealed a pair of real residual checks worth mere pennies: 3 cents and 5 cents.
“I want to give you an example of what a residual check looks like,” Stanford said in a video circulating TikTok and Twitter, raising the 3-cent check to the camera. “I showed this to my brother, and he fell on the floor laughing. It ain’t f–king funny.”
Standford declined in the video to reveal who produced the project that led to such a small check — “I can’t tell you who these cheap motherf–kers are,...
