Fascinating case of overreach
lor_17 December 2018
Wit Maverick tries very hard for lofty themes in this very odd porn fantasy from the turn of this century, a period when Adult filmmakers were given to ambitious and often pretentious projects (before being informed that the public prefers all-sex shows).

It fell into obscurity, so far that I had to add it to IMDb this week, 17 years late. I can't fully recommend it, as Maverick's reach is several feet short of his aspirations.

His screenplay posits an unusual notion concerning "Old Souls" and "New Souls", with ambiguous character John (played by Evan Stone) explaining the principle of scooping up new souls from other people in a strange sort of spiritual quest. Tina Tyler is excellent as a corporate type who has monetized this practice, and Wit unfolds his story in an overly complex time structure that is more distracting than functional.

Stars Syren and Keri Windsor are extremely sexy as two women who get caught up in the soul-snatching, with some okay SPFX to build the fantasy and sci-fi underpinnings to the action. Wit uses interesting looking but highly artificial studio sets for each scene and is careful to deliver high-quality sex vignettes featuring top performers like Nikita Denise, Lauren Montgomery and Inari Vachs in smaller roles.

The clear, bright pastel-emphasized photogaphy is terrific, making one wonder why the more recent hi-def visuals of porn often look so washed-out and bland by comparison to this earlier form of technology.

DVD also boasts a new concept (of the time) called Fantasex from VCA Interactive, delivering a sort of low-tech Virtual Reality in which the viewer can specify and control Keri & Syren's positions (and even orgasms) via one's remote control, apart from the main feature. It didn't catch on, but is another reason to seek out this odd, elusive title.
