Dull, pointless and full of cringe.
I honestly don't know what this was supposed to be all about. As a lot of people know, Derek Savage is rather well known on the internet as "Daddy Derek" and for having created a character called "Cool Cat". It's pretty bad with some terrible child actors, whomever on the B-list of Hollywood he could get and Daddy Derek himself. I want to think it's coming from a place of love but the cynical side of me is leaning more towards Derek Savage trying to strike it rich.
Enter the 420 awards. Now for those that might not know, 420 is a term tied up with marijuana. Supposedly it was started in California when that would be the time that some students would go can check on their marijuana plants. Since then it's been the time when some people light up or the date when people appreciate their weed. Why name the awards ceremony after this? No idea except it was on April 20th. I guess that's Derek Savage's way of trying to be clever and maybe staying hip with the kids.
Against my better judgement I found myself in Vegas on that date and figured this would be good for a laugh. So I, along with about fifty people, were in the ballroom participating in this. Derek Savage was the master of ceremonies and I was surprised that he didn't wear a tuxedo for this. I would have thought he would have wanted to class it up a bit but who knows? He made an impassioned speech at the start, wanting this to go on year after year and wanted to make an awards show that had none of the politics that other award shows have. And yet he still named it after marijuana which is a VERY political issue right now. How's that work?
To call this awards show dull is to devalue the word dull. The only celebrities there were has beens and people that appeared as background characters in movies. The magician, and yes there was a magician. was introduced as having been in "Mars Attacks!". I didn't recognize him and neither did anybody else there.
Each time somebody won an award, some nobody came up to accept it and pretended like they knew the person in question. It was so obvious that they didn't but we were promised that the celebrities that won would be receiving their awards. I can't wait to see Will Smith or Emma Stone thanking Daddy Derek for their awards. I'm not holding my breath for it.
I will say this, the awards didn't look cheap but that doesn't mean they weren't tacky as hell. A big and tall trophy with a large green cannabis leaf on top. Yeah, that's really classy and something you'd want to display proudly on your mantle. But then it really doesn't surprise me based on the other projects that Daddy Derek has done.
The entire thing took about 90 minutes. I was supremely bored and quickly left as I didn't want to spend any more time there than I had to. This is a vanity project from a man that doesn't quite know how to stay relevant. If he does this again next year I really hope he's going to up his game because the entire thing was just sad.
