- Tiago and Lewis stand outside the station by their car, and Lewis tells Tiago not to beat himself up over the suspect giving him the slip... unaware that the suspect is Tiago's brother. Tiago denies recognizing Mateo, and Lewis assures him that since they got Diego Lopez, it's only a matter of time until they find the other Pachucos who killed Reilly.
The two detectives take Diego into the station, and the police officers look at the Chicano prisoner. When one of the cops, Murphy, asked if Diego had help, Vanderhoff comes out and says that they'll determine it when they question him. Tiago tells Murphy that Diego is their collar and they'll handle the questioning, and the two of them start shoving each other. Vanderhoff tells them both to back off, and drags Diego into the interrogation room. Tiago and Lewis follow him.
Vanderhoff shoves Diego into the room and asks the detectives what they've got, and Lewis tells him that Diego was in a flop with three other Pachucos. Two of them were Rico and his girl, and they didn't identify the third. Lewis figures that the unidentified Pachuco is new to the crew, and they have a witness who saw four of them jump Reilly the night the cop died. Vanderhoff figures that they've got nothing until Diego talks, and Tiago says that he can get Diego to open up. Murphy and one of his fellow officers come up and asks if Diego is ready for them, and Vanderhoff tells them that Tiago and Lewis get first crack at the suspect.
Tiago and Lewis go into the interrogation room and unhandcuff Diego, and then Tiago talks to Diego in Spanish. He tells Diego that it's okay that he's scared and he's not going to hurt the teenager. Tiago offers to bring Diego's mother in after they're done, and reminds Tiago that the last time he was in the station, Tiago helped him out and wants to help him again. However, the detective says that they know what Diego did and Diego is going to have to help him by owning up to what he did. Tiago warns that Diego doesn't talk to him, Murphy and the others will get their turn at Diego.
Lewis speaks up and says that they can make their case without Diego, and Tiago points out that Reilly beat Diego in the interrogation room and they know Diego had a reason for wanting Reilly dead. The detectives identify their witness who can put Diego at the scene. Tiago warns Diego that everyone wants someone Chicano to blame for the murders of Reilly and the Hazletts. He warns that they'll try and send Diego to the gas chamber, and Diego will end up there unless he plays it straight with them.
Tiago tells Diego that he has to admit that he killed Reilly, and Lewis suggests that maybe it was someone else. He figures that it was the new kid, and Tiago dismisses his theory as a waste of time. Lewis asks for Mateo's name, and Diego says "Okay" and then that he's thirsty and wants Lewis to get him a Nehi.
Lewis goes to get the soda, and Diego figures that Lewis doesn't know that the new guy is Tiago's brother. He figures that Tiago doesn't know if he's a Mexican or a cop, and Tiago tells him that he won't let his brother go to the gas chamber. Tiago repeats his offer to talk to the DA, and Diego tells Tiago that he's going to help him escape so he doesn't have the chance to turn Mateo in. The detective tells Diego that he's not walking out no matter what he does, and Diego suggests that he leave his gun laying around so he can pick it up. He figures he'll take a few cops with him even if they kill him, and tells Tiago that they hate him worse than they hate him. Diego tells Tiago that it's the other cops or Mateo, and Tiago has to choose. Lewis comes back in and sarcastically asks if he's interrupting something.

Molly insists that God wouldn't ask her to choose, and Adelaide tells her that God asks a great deal from those that he touches. Molly insists that "Sister Molly" is just the one on stage, and Adelaide says that it's just a slogan that Molly likes to repeat. She insists that she's seen Molly and there's only one of her, and Molly tells her that she's not sure that Molly does see her. Adelaide tells her that it's her flock that will make her choose, not God, and they need to feel that Molly is only married to the church. Without that, Molly's power over her flock will be lost.
Molly suggests that it's Adelaide will lose her power, and Adelaide tells her that it's both their power. They'll also lose the soup kitchen, the medical clinic, the Christmas gift drive, and the girl's home... as well as the salvation that Marry offers to those who come to her. She asks if that's what plain old Molly wants, and Molly looks away.
Later on the beach, Townsend watches Kurt out on a surfboard. When Kurt comes back to shore, he talks about how he grew up on Hermosa Beach and learned to surf there. Kurt sits down with Townsend and says that the mongrels came to Hermosa. He wonders why they were allowed there, and then he heard about Hitler and thought he was someone speaking the plain truth. His wife tells him that she won't let him bring Elsa into their house, and won't let Peter take her boys. An office delivers a file folder to Tiago, and Tiago shows Diego the photos of Riley's corpse. The detective talks about how a jury might see them for the first time. Tiago then show Diego a photo of a murderer after he was executed in the gas chamber, and describes in detail what it feels like to die by cyanide gas execution. He asks Diego if that's how he wants to go, and Diego finally says that he didn't kill anyone. Diego invites Tiago to beat a confession out of him, and then asks if he's making Tiago angry.
Lewis tells Diego to tell it to him his way, and Diego claims that he was in Sonoratown with his brother. Diego says that his brother would do anything for him, and that's how it is with brothers. He look emphatically at Tiago and asks if he's got a brother, and says that he and his brother went down to the river to catch mud hens. The mud hens just faint when anyone scares them, Lewis explains that they're playing dead.
Diego asks for another drink and asks Tiago to get him the Nehi while he and Lewis talk. Tiago says that they're done and Diego tells him that they're just getting started, and he's got more to say. The Chicago detective asks Lewis to leave for a minute, and Lewis takes Tiago out into the hallway. He leaves and as Tiago goes him, Diego tells him to come over and they'll get in a fight, and he'll grab Tiago's gun.
Tiago walks out without a word, and Lewis asks him what's going on. He asks what Diego said when he was out of the room, and Tiago tells him that Diego said he's a traitor for wearing the badge. Lewis figures that Diego didn't kill anyone, and Tiago insists that Diego is a killer. They go back to the squad room and Murphy says that Vanderhoff sent everyone out to look for the Pachucos except them. When Tiago wonders why, murphy tells him to ask Vanderhoff himself
Lewis and Tiago go into Vanderhoff's office, and Tiago says that they have Diego talking. Lewis points out that Diego hasn't confessed, and Vanderhoff says that he gave them first show but now he has to accept reality. They didn't solve the Hazlett case so Diego ended up in jail, so now they have another problem and it has to be solved one way or another. Tiago says that they'll solve it, and Vanderhoff tells him that he has 45 minutes until he sends Murphy in.
That night, Rico, Rio, and Mateo are hiding out at a shack by an oilfield. Mateo finally smashes the radio they're listening to and says that he's going back into LA. Rico warns him not to, but Mateo says that he's not going to let Diego die for a murder that he didn't do. The gang leader tells Mateo that Diego got caught because that's who he is, and Mateo got away for the same reason.
There's a knock at the door, and Rico draws his switchblade. He has Rio open the door, and Maria is outside. Rio tells her that she's not welcome there, and Maria tells her to step aside. Mateo tells Rio to let his mother in, and Rio steps aside and lets Maria in. She asks Mateo to come home, saying it doesn't matter what he's done, because God already knows. All that matters is what Mateo does now. Maria tells him that the Pachucos aren't his family, and Mateo tells her that Rio is right and Maria isn't welcome there. Rico opens the door and Maria leaves.
At the station, Tiago goes to the restroom and sits in a stall. He takes out his revolver and unloads it, and Murphy and his men come in joking about how they plan to beat Diego. Murphy says that he's keeping Diego' teeth for Reilly's kid. Once they leave, Tiago reloads his gun. He then goes back to the interrogation room and Lewis is there. Lewis says that he's been in a lot of interrogation room and one thing he's learned is that if someone tells him a story, there's usually something in it. He wonders why Diego put his brother in his mud hen story, and figures it might mean Diego's brother is mixed up in Reilly's murder. Diego says that his brother wouldn't do that, and Lewis suggests they might bring him in anyway.
Diego wonders how long they're going to keep questioning him, and Lewis says a half hour and then the other cops will have at Diego. When Tiago tell Diego he said how it would go, Diego yells at him that he's the one doing the telling. Lewis asks what Diego wants to tell them, and Diego says that he doesn't have a brother. Tiago takes off his gun, revealing his shoulder holster with the gun in it, and Diego laughs and says that his brother is dead.
Lewis asks why Diego put his brother in the story, and Tiago unfastens the snap on his holster. Diego says that he'll tell him about the other guy and stands up. Tiago slams Diego's head down on the table and puts his gun to the prisoner's head, and tells Diego to confess that he killed Reilly. Lewis drags Tiago out into the hallway and realizes that Mateo was the killer. He's furious that Tiago didn't tell him, and says that he's stuck his neck out for Tiago when no one else in the precinct would. Tiago asks what he could tell Lewis when Mateo cut a cop's throat, and what Lewis was going to do. He asks what Lewis is going to do, and Lewis walks away. Tiago holsters his gun, and tells Lewis that Mateo saw him shoot Raul and he got angry, and Tiago doesn't blame him. He says that what Mateo did to Reilly had to do with Tiago, and used to be a good kid. Lewis asks what about Diego, and Tiago says that Diego isn't his brother. When Lewis tells Tiago that the answer is too easy, Tiago says that none of it is easy and it's his family, and it's easy for Lewis because he has nobody. Lewis curses him and pounds on the wall in anger, and tells Tiago to say nothing.
Lewis goes back into the interrogation room with Tiago, sits down, and tells Diego that they're going to get on the level. He talks about how he grew up in Jersey City and it's not so different from Belevedere Heights, and poor folks are always left with the shit and no one will ever do anything about it. Lewis talks about the murder of Hazlett's family is shit that leads to more shit: the riot, four dead cops, eight dead Mexicans, Reilly cuffing Diego to a chair. He says if they go back to the beginning, Hazlett was the beginning. Lewis tells Diego that he killed Hazlett and his family, and says that he doesn't care about Tiago's brother and neither should Diego.
The detective tells Diego what cards he's really holding. Diego is going to San Quentin and he's not coming out, and all Diego gets to decide is if he goes as a rat or a legend. Lewis says that rat don't do well in San Quentin, but guys who take the weight have it pretty good there. Diego might be the king of San Quentin for confessing to all the murders. Lewis says that he'll make sure word gets around of what Diego confessed to, or he'll make sure everyone knows what kind of rat Diego is.
Lewis tells Diego that he has five minutes to make up his mind, and a crying Diego confesses that he killed them all by himself. Sobbing, Diego puts his head on the table and Lewis tells him that it's the smart play. He says that Diego is doing the right thing.
Later, all the officers celebrate in the squad room, and congratulate Lewis and Tiago. Vanderhoff comes over and pours drinks for them, and the officers offer a toast to the two detectives. Tiago and Lewis look at each other.
