Spoiler Alert! This post contains details for the Season 3 finale of The Morning Show.
Uba may never be the same after Season 3 of The Morning Show.
Wednesday’s finale brought the hammer down on Paul Marks (Jon Hamm), a tech mogul who had been trying to take over the media company. Despite all of Cory’s (Billy Crudup) attempts to intercept any naysayers, it was Alex who figured out a way to put a stop to the sale of Uba to Hyperion.
You might be thinking, Alex? But hasn’t she been Team Paul for a majority of the season? Didn’t she just take offense when Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) told her she thought Paul was shady? Well, yes. But all that changes when Alex pays a visit to Bradley, who is spiraling after resigning from Uba on air and having a run-in with Paul where he alludes to the...

Unsurprisingly, 33 million puzzles were no match for the Swifties. Within 24 hours of Taylor Swift launching a challenge to reveal the titles of the vault track from 1989 (Taylor’s Version), fans have cracked the code.
The titles were shared by Google, with whom Swift had apparently partnered for the very on-brand easter egg hunt. In a short video shared on Twitter, a voice that kinda sorta sounds like Swift, but might be some AI/deepfake-esque rendering (weird), congratulated fans for unlocking the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) vault and presented the grand prize: Four song titles.

Taylor Swift broke multiple records, winning the top prize at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday.

She also extended her record as the most awarded artist in the video of the year category. She won in 2015 for “Bad Blood” and in 2019 for “You Need to Calm Down” as well. The children of two Hollywood icons are set to collide in the cat-and-mouse thriller Clawfoot, which is coming to us from director Michael Day, screenwriter April Wolfe, and Yale Entertainment, the company behind the awesome Becky. Moving waves on Spain’s film-tv scene when it launched in early May, Beta Fiction Spain has unveiled its first project as a producer, “Dolores,” a portrait of Spain’s Dolores Ibarruri, a worldwide icon of the workers’ movement and struggle against fascism.
The feature film is inspired by “Pasionaria. La vida inesperada de Dolores Ibárruri,” a question-posing non-fiction book by Spanish historian Diego Díaz Alonso published in 2020.
Underscoring Beta Fiction Spain’s ability to attach best-of-class Spanish talent, the screenplay for “Pasionaria” is being penned by two of Spain’s foremost film-tv scribes, Alejandro Hernández, co-writer of Alejandro Amenábar’s “While at War” and Mariano Barroso’s “What the Future Holds,” and Michel Gaztambide, a writer on Julio Medem’s milestone 1992 debut “Cows,” Enrique Urbizu’s best picture Goya winner “No Rest for the Wicked” and Freddy Highmore heist thriller “The Vault,” the second highest-grossing Spanish movie of 2021.

The Good Boss, Fernando León de Aranoa’s comedy-drama starring Javier Bardem, dominated Spain’s top film prizes this year, The Goyas, collecting six awards including Best Picture.
The film also nabbed Best Director and Best Screenplay for Aranoa, Best Actor for Javier Bardem, Best Original Score (Zeltia Montes) and Best Editing (Vanessa L. Marimbert). It had previously received a record-setting 20 nominations.
The ceremony saw Bardem continue his streak at the awards, collecting his sixth Goya in total, while filmmaker Aranoa is now up to seven across his career.
The Good Boss stars Bardem as a factory owner who deviously schemes his way to solving all of the problems within his business and his personal life, including his infidelities. It was produced by companies including The MediaPro Studio and MK2 Films. Cohen Media Group will handle the U.S. release.

Shortlisted for the Academy Awards in the international feature film category, Fernando León de Aranoa’s “The Good Boss” capped a record 20 Spanish Academy Goya nominations by scoring best picture and actor for Javier Bardem at Saturday’s Goya prize ceremony.
The prizes marked both Leon and Bardem’s seventh Goya wins. Produced by El Reposado and The Mediapro Studio, and a workplace dramedy skewering the abuse of power practised by a seemingly benign factory owner, “The Good Boss” also won best director and original screenplay for León, as well as best score and editing.
Blanca Portillo beat out “Parallel Mothers’” Oscar-nominated Penélope Cruz, thanks to Portillo’s powerful performance as Maixabel Lasa, the real life widow of former Basque Country governor Juan Mari Jauregui who agreed in 2011 to meet one of his Eta killers. Her forgiveness, and Portillo’s portrait, has touched a large nerve in Spain.

Santiago Segura’s ‘The Kids Are Alright’ was the fourth-highest grossing film of the year.
Spain was one of the few European markets where an independent local title made it into the top 10 in 2021.
Rarer still, Warner Bros Spain’s comedy The Kids Are Alright, directed by and starring Santiago Segura, landed in the top five with a year-end gross of $9.6m (€8.49m), ahead of Dune, No Time To Die and Eternals.
The total Spanish box office reached $284m (€251m) in 2021, up on the $193,5m (€171m) of 2020, but far from pre-pandemic figures that saw a total gross of $706m (€624m...

Spain’s top independent sales agents are prepped and ready for this year’s online American Film Market; however, most are eagerly awaiting the return of in-person events, seen as a more productive platform for selling independent cinema abroad. The optimism is cautious, though, with theatrical prospects for international independent films in a post-covid world still hard to predict.
Traditionally, AFM has been a popular launchpad for Spanish films to find distribution in the non-Spanish-speaking world but, while most of the regular faces will be attending digitally, many are holding back their bigger titles for Berlin, where they can be pitched in-person and meetings can be held face-to-face.
“Online markets have been really important for us over the past year, but now we need in-person events. The success of Mia in Rome is proof of that,” said Latido Films general director Antonio Saura, who hosted three market premieres at the...

Vicente Canales’ Film Factory Entertainment has sold Icíar Bollaín’s San Sebastian Festival-bound Basque reconciliation drama “Maixabel” to Germany, striking a deal with Berlin-based distributor Piffl Medien.
The film is set to make its theatrical release in Spain on Sept. 24 via Buena Vista Intl.
World premiering in San Sebastian’s main competition this weekend, Bollaín’s film – which she co-wrote with screenwriter Isa Campo (“The Next Skin”) – stars “Volver’s” Blanca Portillo as the widow of murdered socialist leader Juan María Jáuregui who makes steps towards forgiving the Eta terrorist who killed her husband a decade earlier.
The feature is based around the experience of Maixabel Lasa, a key figure in the journey that the Basque Country is making towards peace and reconciliation following the violence of its recent past.

“Forget My Name,” “Life” and “Stolen Kids” proved some of the big winners at the 2021 Conecta Fiction awards ceremony in Pamplona, northern Spain on Wednesday night as the Europe-Latin America co-production forum reached its climax.

Home viewing competition this week was stiff. It included the HBO Max same-day premiere of “The Suicide Squad” and ongoing availability of Disney’s “Black Widow” and “Jungle Cruise” for an extra $29.99 for Disney+ subscribers. The two titles that could break through were “Pig” (Neon/$6.99) and “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” (Focus/$19.99), both of which added VOD play after three weeks in theaters.
Many Nicolas Cage movies are genre-exercise VOD exclusives, but “Pig” stands out with excellent reviews (82 Metacritic) and his performance as a truffle hunter in search of his beloved pig received some the best reviews of his career. It placed on all three charts and as high as #2 on iTunes.
“Roadrunner,” released Friday, is #7 on iTunes. Vudu reports that though the title is just below its top 10, it was their third-highest ranked new release.
Samba TV, an app that tracks home viewing, estimates 2.8 million U.S. households saw “Squad” this weekend.

In a week that saw three theatrical releases debut on Premium VOD, “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$19.99) won the battle. The ensemble action comedy sequel took first place on all four charts we follow, despite competition from “The Forever Purge” (Universal/$19.99) and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” (Warner Bros./$19.99).
Meanwhile, “Black Widow” (Disney/$29.99) announced an all-digital platform release for August 10. The unusual aspect is it will be offered as a digital download rather than a rental, with extras including additional scenes and bloopers.
More significantly, “Hitman’s” displaced “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount/$19.99) after just one week as top film. That’s a bit of a surprise; John Krasinski’s hit grossed as much as “Purge,” Conjuring,” and “Hitman’s” combined, and “Hitman’s” grossed the least with $37 million.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released a 10-page report to “The Vault,” the FBI’s Freedom of Information Act library, on the 1994 death of Nirvana guitarist Kurt Cobain by suicide.
The file contains letters asking the FBI to reopen its investigation into Cobain’s death, citing television documentaries and other speculative media. The letter writers’ names were redacted.
“There has since been evidence found that he was killed and didn’t commit suicide, as originally thought,” said one letter. Another wrote, “Millions of fans around the world would like to see the inconsistencies surrounding the death cleared up for once and for all. It is sad to think that an injustice of this nature can be allowed in the United States.”
Rolling Stone reported the FBI periodically makes public some of its archives. The file on Cobain was released last month without public notice beyond the posting on the website.

Blend one well-known name with scandal; add an appealing subject. Bake in theatrical visibility and fold in home-friendly pricing. Best served with stale alternatives. With this well-tested recipe for VOD success, the long-delayed “City of Lies” stands out this week.
The troubled 2018 film stars Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker as Los Angeles detectives investigating the murders of Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. Open Road filed for bankruptcy shortly after it acquired the film. Legal and pandemic issues followed, and then Saban stepped in. A March 19 theater release roused $565,000; two weeks later, it debuted on VOD. It’s a trajectory similar to the one recently enjoyed by the disgraced Armie Hammer, who stars opposite Gary Oldman in another VOD hit, “Crisis.”
Priced at $6.99, “City of Lies” took first place at AppleTV, #4 at GooglePlay (both ranking by number of rentals) and an impressive fourth place at FandangoNow (which lists by revenue earned...

“Raya and the Last Dragon,” which grossed $32 million for its first month in theaters, made a strong general-public premium VOD debut. Everyone can now buy it at $29.99; previously, only Disney+ subscribers had the privilege with the same upcharge. The animated film took the top spot at FandangoNow as well as AppleTV which ranks by purchase volume.
“Black Widow” and “Cruella” are expected to follow suit in the coming months, but Disney+ availability looks a lot less threatening after the box-office success of “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which grossed $48.5 million — over 9 million tickets sold — even while available on HBO Max. In Canada, where most theaters are not yet open, it took in around $3 million U.S. as a PVOD offering.
After several weeks at $19.99, “Wonder Woman 1984” benefited from a price reduction to $5.99 three months after its theatrical debut — Aka normal practice. It is #1 at Google Play, and #2 at AppleTV and FandangoNow,...

The Vault feels like a real throwback, a modern heist caper enriched by the genre it sits within, as a good old-fashioned bank robbery. It was all supposed to be so easy, etc. To mark the film’s release, in theaters across the States, as well as On Demand and on digital, we had the pleasure of speaking to two of the robbers themselves, Liam Cunningham and Astrid Bergés-Frisbey.
We discussed working within a film of this nature, and being part of such an impressive ensemble. With Cunningham we discussed how the role feels somewhat tailor made for him, and on the subject of thieving, we ask if he’s ever taken any memorabilia from sets he has worked on. Turns out, he could open a museum with all of his Game of Thrones souvenirs. Then with Bergés-Frisbey we talk about getting a role of this nature and how rare...

The promise of an actual theatrical blockbuster, “Godzilla vs. Kong,” seems to have thrown the VOD charts into stasis. All three of the current #1 titles on four VOD charts also held top spots last week, with no new or reduced price offerings giving much competition.
“Monster Hunter” remains #1 at GooglePlay, and is the only title to rank on all four lists. Paul W.S. Anderson’s film, initially PVOD but now at standard pricing, has been #1 on all of the charts at different times. Worldwide theatrical gross is $30 million (on a reported $60 million budget), but its strong home performance could make up the loss.
“Promising Young Woman” stayed at #1 at AppleTV, where viewer preferences suggest a more upscale crowd. Focus’ reduction to standard pricing was well timed against its Oscar nominations.
“The Little Things” claimed the #1 spot on multiple charts. It tops revenue-tracking FandangoNow and Spectrum Cable, which lists by transactions.

More films with Eddie Izzard and Judi Dench is something that the world needs. They starred together in Stephen Frears’ Victoria & Abdul in 2017 and now they reunite in the Andy Goddard-directed Six Minutes To Midnight which will be released by IFC Films in theaters and on demand starting today.
Written by Izzard, Goddard and Celyn Jones, Six Minutes To Midnight is based on true events from 1939. The film follows teacher Thomas Miller (Izzard) who has taken a last-minute and controversial role teaching English to the daughters of high-ranking Nazis at the Augusta-Victoria College, Bexhill-on-Sea – a finishing school on the south coast of England.
Under the watchful eye of their headmistress Miss Rocholl (Dench), and her devout assistant Ilse Keller (Carla Juri), the girls practice their English and learn how to represent the ideal of German womanhood.
When the body of a former teacher is discovered, it triggers a...

Retitled from the even more indistinct “Way Down” for U.S. release, Spanish heist “The Vault” stubbornly remains one of those movies you know you’ll be forgetting almost as soon as you finish watching it. There’s nothing really wrong with this glossy tale of a “mission impossible” raid on a heavily fortified Madrid bank to retrieve treasure, as slickly directed by Jaume Balaguero of the “[rec]” series. It’s just that a caper of this type needs tense set pieces, surprising twists, idiosyncratic characters or charismatic stars — ideally, all the above — to distinguish itself, and this one falls short in all those departments.
Viewers who really love this sort of thing may get caught up in the procedural aspects of the story anyway. But anyone desiring more from a heist movie than the genre’s familiar conventions professionally executed will find “The Vault” a bit empty. Saban Films is...
