There are really only two ways to become a successful action star. You can either come up through the ranks of the stunt world and hone your acting chops along the way, or start out as an actor first and mold yourself into a formidable fighter that's believable onscreen. Charlize Theron has done the latter, going from ingénue roles like "2 Days in the Valley" to an award-winning performance in "Monster" to instantly iconic action roles in "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Atomic Blonde." Theron has clearly caught the bug for close combat brawls and complex fight choreography, and with the sequels "The Old Guard 2" and "Atomic Blonde 2" on the way, audiences are going to be watching her kicking, punching, and shooting her way through Hollywood for the foreseeable future.
Theron could probably go toe-to-toe with Keanu Reeves at this point, which is why it seemed a little...

After the tonal shift to portray larger than life characters than its humble beginnings of Fast and Furious, the franchise was never too big on character writing to begin with, especially the ones with villainous tendencies. The major memorable adversaries during the first phase were the druglord, Carter Verone in 2 Fast, 2 Furious and Charlize Theron’s Cipher in recent entries. Although the Shaw brothers have proven themselves to be dangerous in the more overt aspects, their change in allegiance and background hardly allows them to be called villains. As the Fast franchise reaches its culmination, the first part of the concluding trilogy, Fast X, presents the oddball character of Dante Reyes through Jason Momoa, which can be considered the standout performance in an otherwise tedious movie. We will briefly discuss the character’s motivations and actions in the write-up, as well as the tease that was shown in the post-credits sequence,...

If you live your life a quarter mile of a time and haven't seen "Fast X" just yet, look away now! This article contains major spoilers for the Fast family.
Have you caught your breath yet? "Fast X" certainly lived up to the hype (you can read /Film's review by Ethan Anderton here) in terms of putting Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto and the rest of his racing crew through the wringer, overloading this latest sequel with constant action that somehow kept topping itself with each and every set piece. All of that culminated with a frankly mind-melting third act finale, which paid off on previous comments that the blockbuster would end on a daring cliffhanger.
By the time the smoke cleared, cinema's First Family was scattered to the winds — either dead or left with no assurances that they'd all make it out alive. After Jakob's (John Cena) heroic...

You may recall that the last entry in the Fast and Furious saga, 2021’s F9, featured a sequence in which two of the Avengers our heroes—the comic foils Tyrese Gibson and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges—drove a car into outer space. There is not anything quite as wacky as that in the 10th and latest installment, Fast X, but there are still plenty of reality-defying stunts that keep this franchise from returning to Earth in any fashion that’s recognizably rooted in reality.
Still, back in F9, one got the sense that the film was at least leaning into its sheer ridiculousness, which made it more palatable and entertaining. With one notable exception, however, Dominic Toretto’s much-discussed Family is now taking itself far too seriously. As a result, the 141-minute movie is a fairly lumbering and tedious sit.

Justin Lin may no longer be in the driver’s seat of the “Fast & Furious” franchise, but his blockbuster fingerprints are all over “Fast X.” The tenth — and most outrageous installment yet — in the ongoing fast-moving franchise delivers on its promise of high-octane thrills while very clearly setting-up a finale to the massive series, entering every living player from its past into the race. Though Lin’s abrupt departure put the fate of the franchise in jeopardy, French director Louis Leterrier has a solid command of explosive and heart-pumping action scenes to take it for spin.
Relying on homages to past stunts (like Diesel’s Dom Toretto driving out of a moving plane) and surprise appearances by long lost characters, the movie lays the groundwork for a possibly three-part finale (as Diesel has indicated). Whether it has any new tricks up its sleeve still remains to be seen, though...

For all the frothy motions of the Fast & Furious franchise, whose characters at this point practically qualify as superheroes, the films have traditionally tried to ground their full-throttle, physics-defying set pieces with goofy yet good-hearted characterizations around relationships to family. You don’t come to these movies for interpersonal drama, but the best entries are aided by their attempts to keep things within the stratosphere of the relatable.
Fast X jumps the shark in that regard. On a scene-to-scene basis, Louis Leterrier’s film, which suggests a Masala production by way of the MCU, isn’t any more implausible than The Fate of the Furious and F9. But between its overly lit, ultra-saturated images and hammy performances, Fast X recalls the old Batman TV series, or a spy parody like Austin Powers in Goldmember.
The plot, such as it is, follows Dante Reyes (Jason Mamoa), the son of Fast Five’s Brazilian banker villain,...

Out in theaters next month, the tenth mainline "Fast & Furious" film "Fast X" is the most expensive one ever — and one of the most expensive movies of all time, in fact. The budget has ballooned to $340 million over the course of production, thanks to Covid-19 protocols, the original director Justin Lin quitting a week into filming, and a massive ensemble cast whose total wage bill now stands at $100 million. (Vin Diesel alone accounts for a fifth of that.)
It probably doesn't help that the cast just keeps growing with every new installment. This is going to take a while, bear with me. In addition to Diesel as Dom Toretto, there's Michelle Rodriguez as his wife Letty Ortiz, Tyrese Gibson as the wisecracking Roman Pearce, Ludacris and Nathalie Emmanuel as tech experts Tej Parker and Ramsey respectively, Jordana Brewster as Dom's sister Mia Toretto, Helen Mirren as militia leader Magdalene Shaw,...

The gang’s all here in the trailer for Fast X – the first part of what’s expected to be a two film franchise finale for the Fast Family. As per other instalments, the trailer promises a mix of cheese and ass-kicking glory, with Dominic Torretto (Vin Diesel) going up against a new baddie, Jason Momoa’s Dante, with a big grudge. Based on the trailer, it looks like the big Rio heist in Fast Five had dire consequences for Dante, and now he’s kidnapped Dom’s long-lost son, as a way to get some payback. Luckily, Dom’s got his whole family there to help, including his former brother-turned-enemy-turned-friend Jakob (from F9), the Shaws (Jason Statham and Helen Mirren), plus Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty, Jordan Brewster’s Mia, Tyrese’s Roman, Ludacris’s Tej, Nathalie Emmanuel’s Ramsey and even Sung Kang’s Han to help out. Dante has Charlize Theron’s Cipher,...

Here’s another ridiculous thing to love about the Fast Saga.)
Not only is the Fast X trailer here, but it’s got everything: great balls of actual fire; Jason Momoa’s new villain Dante’s incoming Tess; and two helicopters taking a fiery tumble after tangling with Dom’s Dodge Charger. It is epic and ridiculous. Watch it now:
Blimey. Doesn’t that look… just bonkers. For one, we get the revelation that Momoa’s villain was, in fact, hiding just behind the vault during Fast Five’s Rio heist. We get Vin Diesel defiantly stating: “You will never be able to break my family.” We get Deckard Shaw teaming up with Han, in what’s surely set to be the coolest subplot. And, we get plenty of hints that this’ll be a Fast film with a bodycount. And to their credit, the action does look suitably epic...

Start those engines and get the Nos ready because today Universal Pictures has released a brand new trailer for the beginning of the end of the "Fast & Furious" series, "Fast X." The final piece of the story will be told in two parts, finishing up the saga of Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his gang of close-knit drivers. The story of racing, heists, and, of course, family, began back in 2001 and has managed to keep people riveted with some unbelievably wild driving sequences that defy logic and physics but are always a whole lot of fun to watch.

It’s almost to the point where one should be thinking that the Fast and the Furious is kind of like an anxious child that is rapidly and furiously changing things around so that their good time can keep going and doesn’t have to end eventually. Syfy has given 10-episode straight-to series orders to Day of the Dead, based on George A. Romero’s classic zombie film, from Cartel Entertainment (Creepshow); and The Surrealtor, from Blue Ice Pictures (Ginny and Georgia). Both are expected to air on Syfy in 2021.
The Day of the Dead order follows the straight-to-series pickup by Syfy of another classic horror movie title, Chucky, as the network continues to expand its slate into the horror genre. Syfy has been investing in high-end scripted content with a focus on edgy, younger-skewing shows with off-kilter sensibility, including comic book adaptations.

Earlier this week, we reported that Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner would be returning for Fast & Furious 9. While the franchise has a record of bringing back former cast members, Walker’s return is slightly unexpected given that he tragically died in 2013. The actor made a posthumous appearance in Furious 7, appearing on screen with the help of Weta Digital and with his brothers Caleb and Cody as on-set stand-ins, but now we’ve heard that they’re seeking a fresh body double for additional scenes in the next film.
Furious 7 was generally judged to have handled the character sensitively and respected the actor’s memory, giving him a sendoff where he literally rode his car off into the sunset. So, my initial thinking was that if Brian O’Conner was making a comeback, it’d be in a short cameo or flashback. But our sources – the...

(Some spoilers ahead for “Hobbs & Shaw”)
The “Fast and Furious” franchise has been going strong for 18 years now, and it just got its first official spinoff with “Hobbs & Shaw” — though I guess if we’re splitting hairs we could say that “Tokyo Drift” was also a spinoff, it just wasn’t framed as one when it was released in 2006.
I bring up “Tokyo Drift” here for a very specific reason. That movie introduced the beloved character Han (Sung Kang) to the series, and then “Fast & Furious 6” retconned Jason Statham’s character, Shaw in “Hobbs & Shaw,” into the background of that film as the person responsible for Han’s death. Then Shaw was a villain in “Furious 7” before turning hero in “The Fate of the Furious” and getting his own movie alongside The Rock’s Hobbs.

One of Hollywood’s most consistently lucrative franchises, “Fast and Furious” is expanding this summer with its first official spinoff, “Hobbs and Shaw.” While that film’s promotion schedule kept recurring stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham from appearing in the upcoming “Fast & Furious 9,” the sequel will certainly not be lacking for star power. It’s been a wild ride watching The Fast and the Furious franchise blossom from a Day-Glo infused street racing flick into a multi-billion dollar juggernaut, but it’s such an enjoyable series with a certain magic that just can’t be replicated. Most of that credit belongs to Vin Diesel, of course, and the fantastic cast and crew that he’s assembled over 8 adrenaline-packed movies, and it seems that Universal plans to milk the series for all it’s worth over the next few years.
For one, we know that Fast & Furious 9 is already in production, though shooting hasn’t officially kicked off yet. Just last month, though, Diesel revealed that John Cena had boarded the film in an undisclosed role. It sounds like he’ll likely fill a hole left by Dwayne Johnson, who unfortunately won’t be returning.

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham debuted new, thrilling footage of their “Fast and Furious” spinoff “Hobbs and Shaw” at CinemaCon on Thursday, with tons of cars, explosions, and banter between the two leads.
When we last saw Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw in “The Fate of the Furious,” the two bitter enemies had reconciled after joining forces to defeat Cipher. Now the two are taking a break from Dominic Toretto’s family to stop an international terrorist played by Idris Elba. But there’s also another issue — Deckard’s sister, played by Vanessa Kirby.
“When it’s the fate of the world, it becomes my issue,” Johnson says in the trailer.

Syfy is putting a serial killer spin on teen movie tropes, with television pilot (Future) Cult Classic.
(Future) Cult Classic might be calling its own shot like Babe Ruth with its very title. However, the dark teen comedy pilot does bring some intriguing concepts to the table over at Syfy in an increasingly crowded small screen playing field.
Syfy ordered the pilot back in January along with cyberthriller Cipher. The series –an original concept, not adapted from a novel or comic book – is the brainchild of Shay Hatten, an up-and-coming talent whose first feature, crime thriller movie Ballerina, is still developing. The story is satirical in nature, set to manifest as a levity-laced genre pastiche of old-school slasher films and teen drama tropes, centered on Bree (Emily Alyn Lind), a ‘90s castaway living in a technology-teeming future.
