Cats & Dogs (2001)
It's for the dogs!
Only see this if you have children, because they're the only ones that'll find it entertaining! There's a couple of good laughs for the adults, but they're few and far between. Good computer generated effects, but the rather cheesy puppets that appear now and again, ruin the whole feeling of continuity. Altogether, it's a real mixed grill.
Hollow Man (2000)
What a ride!
Let me say this, "Holy crap!" You know the over the top graphic violence that Paul Verhoeven is known for? Well, Hollow Man has it in spades. Very intense flick -- great effects both visual and sound-wise (the elevator scene gives the THX certified sound a great work-out). Very competent acting all around. Bacon in particular makes a great villain -- he's getting good at being bad. :) Definitely *not* for the squeamish! Ten out of ten!
The Kettles in the Ozarks (1956)
Definitely not the best Kettles picture.
Where Percy Kilbride was for this outing I'll never know (does somebody know?). The humour is at best forced. I suppose as they were nearing the end of the series, ideas were running low.
Here's a bit of a *spoiler*, but why the heck would there be bootleggers in 1956 making illegal sourmash corn whiskey when real whiskey most likely was selling for almost the same price as kool-aid back then?
Maybe I'm just picky, but the choice of bad guys and their money making scheme seems a little thin. I realise it is a comedy, but the Three Stooges or Abbott and Costello, at their worst, were far more entertaining than this poor excuse for a comedy! Certainly, this picture is not up to par with some of their more humorous, earlier pictures. A four out of ten at best!
From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter (1999)
A worthy successor to the original.
This movie is a thoroughly enjoyable sequel (or more accurately, prequel)to the original. If "From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money" hasn't turned you off of the series then check this movie out! It's full of the same over-the-top violence and gore that made the original so enjoyable. The 'knife' scene is definitely a moment to behold in this film. If you were at all entertained by the original, then this is a must see!
The Haunting (1999)
Great looking effects, do not a great movie make!
Technically, this movie looks great, but it just doesn't have the tension that the original had. Great looking effects, do not a great movie make! If you want scares and tension galore, see the original (better yet, read the book).
Zombi 2 (1979)
My eyes!
The most painful part of this movie must be the eye gouging scene. Very realistic, even 20 years later! Sure the acting leaves a little something to be desired, but the zombies far outweigh the negatives! C'mon, put your brain in neutral and enjoy the gore! It's a no-brainer! No pun intended!
Invaders from Mars (1953)
Hokey
Taken in the context of the time period in which it was made, this movie could have almost been considered a serious piece of work, but viewed with a 90's mindset, it's 50's schlock to the max! Quite enjoyable if you view it from that angle.
The Avengers (1998)
Uma and the Technicolour Catsuit!
Uma in a catsuit is worth a five out of ten by itself, but the rest only gets the total up to a six. Go figure!
Time Runner (1993)
Filmed in Kelowna, British Columbia (among others)!!!
Well, it was filmed in Kelowna, BC. As a result, it deserves at least 5/10, because it shows the beauty of the Okanagan Valley. Apart from that though...
Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974)
Precursor to the X-Files
The Night Stalker was pretty much a precursor to the X-Files. It was a 'monster of the week' show, sort of like the X-Files is now. A combination of humour and suspense that to this day has been unrivaled. What can I say -- I grew up watching the show and have been a fan ever since.
