Powder (1995)
A "Best of All Times"
I honestly can't understand why some people disliked, or even hated this movie. I absolutely adore this movie. I think the acting is great (but then I again, I happen to love both Jeff Goldbloom and Lance Henrickson), and I also feel that Sean Patrick Flanery put on an awesome performance. This movie resonates with anyone who was the underdog in school, as I, and many were when they were young. The story is touching, emotional, and liberating. I don't think I've ever watched this once without crying. Add to that the spectactular soundtrack (which some movie-watchers often overlook), and this movie is right up there on my own "Best of All Times" list. If you haven't seen this, I only ask that you ignore the negative comments until you've had the chance to watch it yourself and make up your own mind... you might be pleasantly surprised.
X2 (2003)
The Hype Delivered
I think it really says something when a person can get into all the hype about a movie, obsess over it way before it comes out, download all the trailers, clips, browse through all the galleries... and STILL love the film when it comes out. I was so excited about this movie way before May 2 rolled around. I bought X-Men 1.5 (even though I already had the VHS) just for the X2 footage. But when the movie came out, and I sat in the darkened theater, I couldn't help but have a silly grin on my face the whole time out of sheer joy and pleasure of having seen this incredible film! The action is amazing, intense, and intelligently choreographed. I love the fact that the action is, for the most part, done in real life and not overrun with CG (as was, in my opinion, overly done in such films as Star Wars Ep 2 and even a bit in LOTR: Fellowship). Many complained of the "slower" interludes/scenes but I thought they were great. Not only did it allow for some teases, humor, and some character development, but it creates a contrast between the more intense scenes of the film- you get the impression that you are riding some kind of filmic roller coaster. About the only BAD thing about this film is the music! Oh where or where did Michael Kamen go? All in all, great film, surpasses the first by far, great acting, awesome characters, awesome action, definitely one of my favorite films of all time. Now there is just the agony of waiting for it to come out on DVD!
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Star Wars for the next generation...
All I can say is... WOW! This is the Star Wars for this generation! The effects were sooo much better than Ep. I, the action was incredible.... and Yoda rocks! Plus, bounty hunters galore, and Darth Vader music!!!This is a must see!
The Glass House (2001)
Just don't undertsand...
For one reason or another, I can't seem to understand why people hated this movie! As for myself, I thought it was great! I felt like the movie really put me in the characters' shoes, and I found myself getting very involved in the film. I found the story interesting, Leelee Sobieski to be intriguingly fantastic, and the "guardians" to be absolutely intimidating and frightening. I simply loved how the plot slowly developed, revealing just how terrible a plan the Glasses were creating. Maybe I'm just easily pleased, but I thought this film was a real winner in my opinion. If your in the mood for a nail-biting thriller/drama, I suggest you at least give it a try.
K-PAX (2001)
One word..
I can think of but one word to describe "K-Pax"- "Wow!" The cinematography, the characters, the script, the acting... it is all so amazing! I loved the way the movie played with light. I loved the symbolism, I loved the technical stuff, I just plain loved this movie period. Let's start with the plot. It was enticingly interesting, and most importantly, very different and original (I thought). The best thing about it, however, was not it's character development, it's witty dialogue, or it's techno babble, but the fact that it left so much open to interpretation. This is a movie that makes you think, that makes you "look at the world differently." It doesn't cram things down your throat for you to regurgitate later, but it lets you take it all in, and digest it over time- coming to your own conclusions. As for the cinematography- fabulous! It was almost as if you could feel the light on your face through the screen. There are so many interesting angles, so many manipulations, rainbows, interesting close-ups, different view-points, fresh takes on what we so often take for granted. Simply wonderful. Then there is the acting! Kevin Spacey, you are a god! Such emotion, such passion. You can tell these actors really cared about their characters and really wanted to do them justice. (I think I've found a new role model for my acting goals.) This movie is a definite winner- whether you like your movies mysterious, sci-fi, fantasy-minded, or dramatic, this movie has it all. Don't miss it.
No Escape (1994)
You either liked it or hated it
Well, after reading the other comments it looks like people either liked this movie or they hated it. I happen to be one who liked it, and very much. It's not one of the movies where you sit and think deeply about it when the plot is complex and twisted, and it doesn't have "Star Wars" special effects, either. But I still enjoyed it. I thought the plot was creative, and the action scenes were fun. This is just a good-time movie to sit down and watch whenever your in the mood. Just because it doesn't rank with some of the higher emotional and special effect spectacular movies, doesn't necessarily mean it stinks. If you got nothing to do and are sick of the box office hits than I think you should take a look at this one.
Lost Highway (1997)
More Than One Time
Now see, these are the types of movies I like to see. Once you reached the end of the film you didn't quite grasp the whole meaning, and you didn't quite understand it. So you have to keep watching it over and over to better understand it. Looking for small clues to completely "get it." That's why these types of movies are so much fun to watch. No matter how many times you watch it you will always find something new, something you didn't catch last time, something that makes you think. I thought this was a great movie, and it made you think which is always good.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993)
Will miss it when it's gone.
This has got to be the best Star Trek show ever! It's intense and suspensful and very interesting. It deals with a lot of real life problems and weaves you into the story. The characters are very life-like and they all do a wonderful job acting. I watch every episode and I'm really going to miss it when this season's over. I hope they make a movie like they have done with the ST:TNG series. This show is great! :)
