Snake Eyes (1998)
highly underrated. this man is a genius.
that's all. it's quite incredible his only bad movie (Mission Impossible) was such a smash hit and nobody cared about this masterpiece. DePalma' s Cinema is all here (well, maybe not. there are no ESP characters that can lift knives and make 'em fly...).
Progeny (1998)
brian and stuart at their best
Brian Yuzna's "The Progeny" is outstanding!!!!!!!!! His best effort since his classic "Society"! Maybe it will only come out on video, but don't miss it. It's an alien abduction/insemination horror/sci-fi hardcore movie, and a brilliant metaphore about the responsibilities of fatherhood which also strongly reminds us that pregnancy is ALWAYS an Alien invasion. Hats off.
Godzilla (1998)
yeeeeeeeeeeeeuuuuch!
So bad, it's even hard to review! Two questions: why the hell did Toho allow this mess? And: are we sure they
did spend more than 100M $ to craft this below average piece of moviemaking? SFX were crappy, acting poor (and no Big Buck names were involved), and the entire Madison Square Garden Velociraptor-like sequence stinks. Furthermore, there's
too much advertising and in-Jokes like major Ebert (thumbs down!) are silly beyond forgiveness. American audiences should be angry with Emmerich. He's a heavy teutonic iconoclast revanchist: it seems he only gets pleasure out of destroying the country. At one point I thought the Army was going to defeat Godzilla with another 1,000 H-Bombs like they did in ID4! can you imagine the sequel? The lizard's carcass slowly rotting in the background and Matthew Broderick as well as millions of new yorkers slowly dying of cancer.....
Rounders (1998)
Fine. But Art is elsewhere.
Well crafted, and entertaining. But why was it selected in competition at the 55th Venice Film Festival? It's the classic Miramax feature, good for Saturday nights and cable TV, balancing between independent appeal and mainstream big bucks structure. Malkovich's performance, however, is worth the ticket. As intelligent as he is, he realized he could revitalize a career next to agonizing recycling himself as a wonderful supporting actor. Kudos.
Fatal Frames - Fotogrammi mortali (1996)
argh!
an insult. It's quite inexplicable how director Al Festa managed to get enough money to shoot this. Not only this movie is worse than anything you've ever seen, but it's also some kind of insult to all the talented b-movie genre players and filmmakers it intends to pay homage to. Thank God, despite some media hyping, it's been a total flop. Sometimes there's justice, out there. Don't even think of throwing away your money catching it on tape. If you want to check out what's left of the great season of Italian B -MovieMaking you should stay in the 80's and search for every Fulci title you've missed. The Art was there. This is simply the kind of boring copycatting trash which led our industry to ashes.

i saw the movie in 1996 at the Noir in Festival in Courmayeur. Despite a bad projection it was truly a great experience. I think I'm one of the first reviewers of Mr. Buck's work in Italy, because my article appeared on the January 1997 issue of Cinema SFX Magazine. I recently saw it again on tape, and I still think it's a wonderful and extremely original work. I recommend it to every true movie lover. You can find it on VHS (E.I., NTSC only) with four other independent features that are really worth a look. Douglas, if you read this, I'm your fan. Thanks.
