From Justin to Kelly (2003)
If you loved them on American Idol, you should like it.
OK, no one was expecting an epic here. But if you loved them on American Idol, you should enjoy seeing them in this guilty pleasure movie. Fondly remembering campy Annette and Frankie on the beach helps too.
It's like several music videos strung together with a loose plot which puts Kelly and Justin in each other's arms by the end. 3 girls and 3 guys in Florida on spring break, some find romance, some don't. At least all 3 girls didn't fall for all 3 guys. Afraid I kept wishing the Kaya character would have been played by Tamyra Gray, but the gal who did was fine. My friends dogged the clothes Kelly wore - said she made Texans look like they had bad taste. Thought they were kinda cute myself.
Idol fans - go and enjoy - but hurry. I bet it's not around long. Made me pop Kelly's great CD in the the car as I left and stop to pick up Justin's on the way home.
The Paradise Virus (2003)
Melody Thomas Scott escapes Y&R and ditzy blondism
Man, is it great just to see Young and The Restless star Melody Thomas Scott as something other than flighty Nikki Newman! A doctor with a brain no less! And super nice to see her with the likes of the gorgeous Lorenzo Lamas instead of Victor Newman!
Mel plays a college professor of micro-biology who goes to the islands with her son for spring break, only to find herself a prisoner of the island infested with a rapidly spreading virus. Handy for her there is the hunky character played by Lorenzo, who has a daughter just her son's age.
Mel shines, as does Lorenzo with a bit of the overacting from the younger couple. Interesting premise in these times of chemical and biological terrorism talk. Worthwhile seeing, especially for Y&R fans.
Love, Honor & Obey: The Last Mafia Marriage (1993)
It's back on Lifetime, Dec 2000
Very engrossing story of Mafia life from the wife's point of view. You'll recognize all the stereotypical Mafia movie actors. I loved Ben Gazzara and Nancy McKeon. Was surprised to find it was based on a book written by the main character.
The Family Man (2000)
Terrific Movie!
This movie is fascinating, hilarious, and touching - not a boring moment in it. Every scene is a new surprise. Nicolas Cage carries it all. Who else was in this movie? The little girl was cute, though hard to understand. But who cares? I loved it. What more can I say?
Unbreakable (2000)
Disappointing for me
Shall I begin by telling you how many times I nodded off? I went in expecting great things (but not the same things) from Bruce, Shyamalan and Samuel L., and while the acting was terrific, I just couldn't get into the story. Prime example, when your premise is a guy who survives a train wreck, the least you could do is SHOW the train wreck! I'd have settled for a Fugitive insert at that point! Sorry, I just cannot recommend it.
Magnolia (1999)
Totally awful, long, boring, waste of time!
I hated it and was ready to get up and leave after an hour, but kept waiting for a big payoff when all these lives intertwined and all died or went nuts at once or something. After 2 hours I was antsy, dying for it to just end so I could get out of there. Once the frogs fell from the sky, I gave up and walked out. If that big payoff ever came, who cared? Kicked myself all the way home for wasting 3 hours on this crap. And to think it was nominated for a golden Globe over The Green Mile is even more sickening. Tommy Dear, that's two terrible movies you've sucked me into this year. Shame on you.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Beware - Porno ahead!
Hey, I'm pretty open-minded, but I don't know how they got the R rating on this film! I love Tom Cruise - and he was great. But don't get excited gals - he never gets beyond a bare chest and foreplay. On the other hand, Nicole (and every other woman in this film) bares it all - to the point that I was embarrassed for her. The suspense was there, I stuck it out, but it dragged A LOT.
Even so it was only mildly irritating until the orgy scenes, which were demeaning to say the least. Everyone in the theater groaned at the ending, expecting a big payoff that never came. Kubrick may have been a master, but I never thought it would be of porn. I'm glad Roger Ebert explained the point of this movie tonight, or I certainly would have missed it. I gave it a lenient 5 of 10 because of Cruise's performance what it could have been!
Un tè con Mussolini (1999)
Cher and Lily make this movie!
I normally don't comment, just vote. But someone has to counter that scathing review. Maybe being an Englishman himself makes him see it so differently.
OK, you're right. The beginning was a yawn - until Cher showed up and lit up the screen. With her help, and Lily Tomlin's I got involved enough to stick it out even when they were not on screen. Loved the moment Cher sang. Loved the resemblance between the boy Luca and the young man Luca. Loved the look into the past, to a whole new culture I knew nothing about.
I walked out thinking I liked it, not sorry I went, so gets a good review from me.
