Lost in Translation (2003)
This movie CHANGED MY LIFE
Watching 'Lost In Translation' cured my insomnia, just as 'The English Patient' did in the 1990s.
I just don't get it. This film must have some weird drug interaction with people in Hollywood.
Being There (1979)
Breathtakingly Brilliant!
The character of Chauncey is like the eye of Hurricane "Normal". The movie reflects the extent of our insatiable hunger for celebrated people to manage our lives for us and give us a sense of purpose.
Peter Sellers gives a wonderful performance as the lead. As the one-dimensional Chauncey, Sellers uses just his voice, his face and the whole supporting cast to generate the pace and hilarity so associated with his work. Edgar Bergen couldn't have done it any better.
The water-walking scene is a great way for this movie to end. Chauncey isn't the Revelator portrayed by tele-evangelists. In this film he is instead the peaceful spirit that lives in all of us. In the film, I think they portrayed the strength of this spirit in physical terms we could relate to.
After an ending like that, I can only imagine what a sequel would have been like! Pope Chauncey I.
Blackheart (1998)
Implausible situations, unsexy characters and a pathetically silly movie!
"Blackheart" is a very predictable psychological yawner that left me wondering why I bothered watching it, not to mention reviewing it.
The marks are so shallow and stupid that the audience probably identifies most closely with the grifters. The PI, played by Christopher Plummer, is so stereotypical that he even wears a Sherlock Holmes hat throughout the movie.
After the rich heiress escapes with her life and money intact, I have to believe she gives it all away the next day to the magic bean salesman.
This movie insults it's audience and is a monumental waste of celluloid.
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
A personal favorite. I watch this movie every chance I get.
This is a thrilling and thought-provoking film that will stand the test of time. It's a story about personal redemption in the face of stark tragedy, injustice and revenge. Although it is set more than 130 years ago, the key elements are played out every night on the news in many parts of the world, most recently in Kosovo. This movie is about a lot more than the post-Civil War period.
Wales had a long, violent journey to find people he could make peace with and want to give his life serving.
The texture of this film was deep and rich with fine colorful characterizations from Eastwood's supporting cast, particularly the Lone Waite and Fletcher parts. I consider it Clint Eastwood's finest film, both in front of and behind the camera.
Wedding Bell Blues (1996)
90's women go fishing for men in Las Vegas. Object Matrimony.
Mildly satisfying flick about three roommates making a pathetic attempt to quickly "catch up" with their friends and family's expectations by finding a man and getting married the same day in Las Vegas. Debbie Reynolds' Vegas hotel and her nightclub act are featured.
Everyone gets what they need, but not necessarily what they thought they wanted going into this.
