Bio Hazard (1996)
A True Classic
At it's time of release it was absolutely revolutionary. Great story with silly but enjoyable voice acting. The movie like qualities of the game also set a trend which helped inspire games such as "Metal Gear Solid" and " Clock Tower ". Overall, perfect 10. Barry: " I hope this isn't Chris's blood."
Friends (1994)
Overpayed, Overacted, Overblown, Overran, Overpromoted, Over.
I would have to say "Friends" has long since crested it's appex. Last seasons shows were all devised as obvious attempts to steal "Survivor's" megalithic ratings. When a show can't gain ratings on it's own ( a lesbian college kiss between the "Beatlegeuse" girl and Jennifer Anistan Pitt, come on now that's straying far from the shows baseline stories ) is a sign of serious writers block in the shows creative team. Also, these "Friends" are really demanding when it comes to NBC dishing out the dough. Why should NBC pay them phenomenal paychecks when average sparingly-paid people living in the wild are wiping the floor with them on the other station? Rachael pregnant, Who's the father? Who cares!!! ( If NBC is really ratings hungry Brad Pitt will make a special appearance as the father ). I would rather watch Jeff Probst and dirty normal everyday people sturggling against each other in the bush.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000)
As Close to Weekly Hollywood Production and Quality You Can Get.
"C.S.I" is the first weekly television show I can say is high in content and detail. So many other shows ( all of NBC's line-up ) are filled with story and completely devoid of real life quirks ( What do you think makes James Cameron and Stanley Kubrick films so good? Details, Details, Details ). "C.S.I" pack another punch with a cast that has worked in the film business and knows the metaphorical territory. Willam Peterson has played law enforcement officers in the past ( See "Manhunter" and "To Live and Die in LA" ) and Merg Helgenberger was in the recent "Erin Brokovich".
The usually weekly director Danny Cannon is dead on with the performances and the who-dunnit mysteries. And even if the swooping overhead shots of Las Vegas may be extraneous in some eyes, it all adds to the overall impact and emotion of the show. Behind the neon sentinels standing against the desert and five-hundred to one odds ,hides a common but all too uncommon seedy side.
Murder in Small Town X (2001)
A reality show gone horribly wrong.
"Murder in Small Town X" has to be the worst reality show to come down the pike. I love reality based programming, but this program has so many loose bolts it makes " The Michael Richard's Show " look like a tight-well oiled machine. The direction and or editing ( had to spread around the credit ) is so poor it hasn't given us any incite into the players personalities and feelings towards there fellow players. In some shows ( especially big budget blockbuster Hollywood movies ) charaterization can be over looked, but in a reality show it's a vital esscential to the connection between the audience and the characters. By knowing the players it adds to our dismay when our favorite contestant is ejected from the show. On " Murder " we have nameless and faceless sheep being led to the slaughter and how can we care?
I'm not going to bore you with the rules or gameplay of the show it's arbituary, even a game with the most complex rules in the world can be good. And that's the problem with " Murder " it's just no good and on top of that it's dumb and not visable. Here's an example: on each episode the killer delivers a red envelope to the crime solver's headquarters during the duration of the show. In this envelope contains a cheesy clue dealing with the case. Now does this strike anyone as stupid? I would love to hear a contestant proclaim to the host, " Wouldn't it just be easier if we held 24 hour surveillance over our headquarters and discover the identity of the person delivering these letters?"
In the end " Murder " is one of those sad shows that really could've been good and not the target of my critical nature. But, I have to say it's time to set up the surveillance camera and put this puppy to sleep.
