The Ring Two (2005)
A fun trip down the well!
While not "The ring" in the sense of constant scares and edge-of-your-seatness.....The movie was creepy...
General Plot:
Rachel and Aiden move away from the chaos and horror that consumed their lives and attempt to live in sleepy astoria oregon. Samara, however has other plans for them....and Aiden in particular....
Good points: The presentation was Great! the abundance of water in the film (even on aiden's hospital gown) shows the importance and really reminds us who the director is.....I mean the film seems to drip literally off the screen, every scene is damp or wet in some form.
In-Jokes....a reference to a Dr. Koji (author of Ringu), many oblivious people referencing the first film "i think they got a condo in phoenix"...
Most of the special effects are well done without being cheesy, with the exception of a few towards the end of the film...(no spoilers)
As for the new mythos this adds on, it breaks and makes new rules for the "cursed tape", as well as alludes to the possibility this is not the first time these events have occurred...
Performances: David dorfman finally had something to do, and really got to show some range with his character. (??characters??)
The suspense in many scenes, such as the "I saw her face" type scenes was palpable and really made for honest scares...although most were predictable there were a few that were creepy beyond belief.
Sissy spacek brings a great performance to her short role in the film, lending a new meaning to the word, "crazy"....or is she?
Bad Points:
The soundtrack is almost lifted from the first film, and very few new things are added on, making it seem almost like this film just belonged as an extended version of the first. I guess that is a good thing though.
Samara, Too much of her, and it really takes the scare factor away from seeing her in dark corners, since you know what she is up to from the start, and really you just expect another watery death and creepy face.
Samara seems to look almost pathetic in this film at times, begging for quarters, or a nice cup of hot chocolate, not being a vengeful well girl thing.
She does get her scares throughout the film and manages to stay around without seeming laughable until the end.....
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
you have been warned..
At the end of the film, which is in every preview, Rachel is taken INTO THE TV WORLD (which seems to be reminiscent of Narnia) and has a thrilling well escape chase with samara. The flaws in this "climax" are abundant, mainly it being the part of the film where the entire theater was cracking up, and laughing nearly to tears....I am not sure if this is the intended reception, but it sure was what they got. It wasn't comical, but i don't think they achieved the terror that we felt the first time we saw samara come out of the TV to claim Noah.
A lot is left unexplained, while some things get resolved, which I am sure they are holding for the next sequel.
Overall this movie was a great film, despite its flaws. it fit the ringworld perfectly, and if you can suspend your disbelief at a killer videotape and a evil girl coming out of your TV, you are in for a creepy time.
I think this movie feels restrained, and it wants to be more, but never becomes the full human drama it is reaching for.
either way, if you were a fan of the first ring, go see this film, you feel at home in the well.
From One ringworm to the world.....
The Rescue of Pops Ghostly (1987)
A fun campy trip through video game nostalgia
Ahh, Pops Ghostly, watching it again brings back many memories of hours spent trying to rid that house of those pesky ghouls.
I hadn't thought of this game in years until my old friend who used to play this with me called one day. We began reminiscing and realized how much fun that really was.
Picking an action max system off of ebay for a reasonable price, i began to watch the video once again....
The general outline is a bunch of ghosts were being invaded by, you guessed it, GHOSTS! and when scary things get scared, RUN!
You progress through the house shooting flashing spots on the marionettes that float by, chanting and screaming.
Eventually you find yourself WHIRLING through some kind of time tunnel at an incredible speed until you enter back into the house, following a skeleton through a window!
Granted there is no real storyline to speak of, beyond your mission, but there are some neat tricks they use, ghosts appearing to scare two children who chased a dog in, and a neat fireball throwing demon thing.
The music used is 80s Gold! its synth-horror-pop at its best, and kind of catchy at times.
This is the kind of game that was fun because you had to use your imagination, and it encouraged this through the ghosts talking to YOU and bringing the player into the game.
I think the game would lose a lot of its charm if they remade it into a CGI or animated game.
Out of 5 stars, i would give it 3. Probably the best of the ActionMax series, and the easiest to find as well!
Infested (2002)
B list Cast for a great modern day B movie!
I rented Infested being a big Zach Galligan fan, hoping to see billy peltzer himself doing some heroic deeds, instead I find a satisfying B-Movie. A group of old friends meet to lament over one of their own's passing. They are all the cream of the modern day yuppie crop, yet not unlikable. The pacing is good, and you get to know some of the characters pretty well, until they start getting (and im not making this up) Possesed by flies......Then the movie takes a turn for the absurd when characters try to infest others, and so on. The movie is not a great movie by any means, but is suitable for a rental, or if you can pick it up cheap. There are some creepy scenes (never look at showers the same way again..) and some quite gory scenes. The fly effects are done well, but the whole idea of the movie is very odd and somewhat confusing on first viewing. It was refreshing to see Tom paris from star trek, (robert duncan mcneil) Billy Peltzer from Gremlins (zach galligan), and The Pink Ranger (Amy Jo Johnson) in the same movie, and all three do the best job of any of the actors. Robert Duncan Mcneil is the BEST out of the three, and thats saying a lot, but I think if Zach and him had the same amount of screen time, Zach would have shone through.
The special effects are good, nothing groundbreaking, just a bit beyond basic CGI. Overall the movie will have you singing "da da da" all night long, even if you arent a big fan of any of the main players.
Eight Legged Freaks (2002)
Freaky Fun
Eight Legged Freaks (Originally titled Arac Attack, but changed since it sounded too much like something else) is a perfect date movie. If you spend the whole time making out, you wont miss much, If you are looking for a movie where your date will jump in your lap, or even if you are looking for one that you dont have to think too hard about, this is for you. ELF was a satisfactory film, but it wont break any new boundaries.
The opening till the end Eight Legged Freaks never takes itself too seriously, thankfully, otherwise it would be completely unwatchable. The acting is average, and the script was well written. Well, as well-written as can be expected from a movie about giant spiders. It takes a lot of guts to pull off a movie about giant spiders in the present day, and i think it was done with some degree of skill.
There were quite a few of the horror-comedy cliche`s that are so common nowadays, but they didnt really detract from the film. My biggest complaint that some of the film seemed like it was filler, quite generic, and bland until the spiders reappear. the town scenes seemed like a rehash of gremlins and other critter movies. dont go to the film expecting a horror or gore fest, or even a complete comedy. the movie is a good balance that never takes itself too seriously. id say wait till budget if you are unsure, but do yourself a favour enjoy this guilty pleasure.
Road to Perdition (2002)
An interesting journey.
Road To Perdition was an amazing movie in many different ways!
Tom Hanks and Paul Newman are just pure gold in the film, their chemistry is very convincing as 30s mobsters. Jude Law enters the movie near the second half and manages to slyly steal the scene slowly but surely with a "gifted" but quite insane villan.
The first thing I noticed as i viewed Road, was how natural everyone was. All the acting seemed natural, completely at ease and nothing at all was forced, every laugh, tear, and scream was convincing. I went into this film knowing nothing about the plot, on a tip from my girlfriend, and ended up getting very involved. Sam Mendes obviously had a fun time recreating the midwest in the 1930s, and everything seems accurate down to the last 2$ bill. He walks you into the era gently, lets you sit down, and meet the sullivans. thanks to a well written script, you feel like the sullivan family are the neighbours next door. The camerawork was appropriate in every scene. Soft and gentle at home, harsh and real when the dramatic action occurs, and relaxed and natural when the moments of levity set in. The movie itself was just something that didnt seem like 2 hours. it seemed like an epic film, but at the same time only a few moments.
Lastly, one of the best things about the film was that all the death scenes were tastefully done, even though it does earn its R rating, the gore we don't need to see we are spared.
If you like dramatic setpieces, give Road To Perdition a shot, or even if you are a fan of the director or cast. A great date movie, and a must own one as well.
Sealab 2021 (2000)
An insane trip under the sea....lab.
When i first saw this show i thought it was sealab 2020 (the 1972 show) but when the stormy's started hitting themselves in the head with sticks, that made me do a double take.
Sealab 2021 is a hilarious show about a research crew that is....get this...under the sea! some people dislike this show because the animation is choppy, and the series has absolutely NO contuinity. alas, those people miss the point. the cartoon is a "video remix" of the original Sealab 2020 tv show. its quick, dirty, and insane. CN made a good move by keeping it on Adult Swim, a lot of the younger crowd would miss the jokes.
the music is great, the show has no remorse for the insanity it promotes, and the stories, while pointless, are quite compelling.
if you have a chance, see it NOW! it's a gem and actually something original that cartoons have been missing for many years. personally i rate it right up there with Invader Zim as the best cartoons in the last 20 years.
"hesh wants sex!!" - just one of the many memorable quotes....
till next time... ****a dodge ball slams in to Stryker2's head*** GOOYAH!
Gekijôban Poketto Monsutâ Kesshôtô no Teiô Entei (2000)
an older perspective
i have read that there are no fans of pokemon left, but i disagree, i have been following the series since in its inception, and being 18 years old, i see some things that younger kids might.
the movie itself....seems to be darker than the first two, and not as grand of a scale as they were, with the world at stake, this time its just a little girl, and......well that i will save for aspoiler. Entei, the legendary dog, is featured center stage, which is GREAT. some old friends show up......although tracey is only there for a cameo, but new freinds are made, and new pokemon are revealed........ this movie also had a lot more pokemon battles, and they were more intense, so you can see some of the new NEO pokemon's skillz.
now earlier what i said about it being darker than the others, is where the others dealt with an epic scale, this is really close to home, and deals with loss of loved ones....and being alone. the unown are quite different from any other pokemon seen so far. very amazingly done in CGI, so they stand out on their own, which is also creepy. the "crystal towers" are done like a twisted dream....... one thing that stood out, is ash and co. are in life threatening situations during this movie, its not simply getting K.Oed, its falling to their death that is worrying them. sharp objects and no mercy is the theme here. many times we have worried that our heroes are gona be hurt, but this is the first time when we are afraid they will be killed!
overall, a great movie, the music is more appropriate than "brother my brother" in the first movie, action packed orchestration, telling you the mood of the scene, very clearly, matrix style, tense moments fill the last half hour.
like i said 8 out of ten, the only things keeping it from being a 10 is
(minor spoiler alert!!!!)
ok read on
ash not getting any new pokemon or something monumental...
the short being kind of campy.
and the unnown not really being explained....but i guess thats why they are "unknown"
Ghostbusters (1984)
Paranormal Perfection
Ok, ive been quiet long enough. this movie made me fall in love with ivan reitman, harold ramis Bill murray and the rest of the GB crew. since then i have searched high and low for movies with some of these people, and wow have all of them rocked! the special effects were AMAZING for the year, and still are today. the one liners "GET HER!", "we came we saw we kicked its a$$" and of course "who ya gonna call?!" left a lasting impression of this movie in my head that when the sequel was released i nearly wet myself! the idea of a supernatural blockbuster comedy was pure genius! i have not seen a funnier and more convincing movie since!
