Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
A Mess of a Movie
From the opening scene this movie was utter garbage. It made absolutely NO sense and truly goes down as the worst film I've ever sat through. Okay, the only redeeming person in the whole show was Emily Watson and even her character was bizarrely written. And what about the costume department? We never did grasp the supposed "joke" of Adam Sandler's lousy blue suit.
Anybody know how I can to recover this 89 minutes of my life somehow?
Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
Don't waste your $$ on this dud...
Wow, what a waste of an hour and a half of my time. If you've seen the previews for this summer comedy (which were hard to miss considering that the studio has been shoving the previews down our throats since April)then you've seen the film. If the idea of seeing Kirstie Alley slowly going mad appeals to you then by all means, waste your eight bucks.
I, for one, was completely turned off by this mean-spirited attempt at comedy based upon a very competetive small-town beauty pageant. Sure, some of the acting was pretty decent but the writers really dropped the ball on this one. Extremely violent for a comedy, this film was a real bomb and once the word gets out I'm certain the box office receipts will be a real loser too.
A Place for Annie (1994)
An excellent tearjerker!
I was sitting at home last Saturday, bored to tears, turned on the t.v. and for the next two hours sat entranced by this powerful and moving film that really did justice to the HIV-babies and their mothers that we hear so much about.
Top-billed Spacek and Mary Louise-Parker really shine in this film...Parker (who has full blown AIDS) comes back to reclaim Annie, her child, who she was forced to give up when the baby was six months old. Spacek adopted Annie and the film shows the tensions and struggle that the two ladies go through to see eye to eye in the care of Annie. The end may surprise a few people; the entire film is top-notch!
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
Crude animated humor comes alive...for $8.00, you could do worse.
Having only seen the Christmas episode from 1997, I wasn't sure how much of this film version I would grasp...I guess there isn't too much to grasp, actually. You just sit and revel in the expletives, and flatulence that *IS* South Park. Sitting at about 90 minutes, the film goes by real quick. The devil and Saddam Hussein do a lot to help move the film along...some of their shenanigans being the crudest of the film.
All in all a good production. I give it thumbs up.
Great Performances: The Rodgers & Hart Story: Thou Swell, Thou Witty (1999)
Great documentary!! Must see for fans!
This was a PBS Showcase special that ran late one Wednesday night on PBS. It was a great tribute to the lives and music of Rodgers and Hart. Equal time was given to both lyricists with interviews from relatives and snippets from some of their musicals. Jane Krakowski sings My Funny Valentine.
Snake Eyes (1998)
The film wasn't half bad
Actually, I thought that overall, contrary to the reviews, this was not a 1 /2 bad movie. They certainly could have toned down old Nicholas Cage during the first 20 minutes of the film as I thought he was tremendously obnoxious AND they could have certainly rewritten the last 20 minutes of the film.
After all that is said, the stuff in between the beginning and the end was well written and well acted on the part of all three main characters, esp. Cage and Sinise.
