The Scarlet Claw (1944)
Perhaps the best of the Universal Sherlock Holmes series
This is probably the best of the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes series from Universal (although it doesn't top "The Hound of the Baskervilles", which was done for another studio). Atmospheric, yet fast-paced. A good starting point if you're not familiar with the series.
Cobra (1986)
Could this be Stallone's worst movie?
Somehow I missed "Cobra" when it first hit the theaters over 10 years ago. I finally caught up with it last night on cable and realized that I hadn't missed a thing. This is even worse than "Tango and Cash". Absolutely nothing makes sense in this brainless film. Example: After Stallone wastes two axe-carrying members of a death cult at his home, his superiors still say he is offering no proof that the killings are being done by a team rather than a single man. At least there are a few members from the cast of "Dirty Harry" to remind us that a superior film can be made having the same theme. Rent that instead of "Cobra".
Un minuto per pregare, un istante per morire (1967)
Utterly ordinary spaghetti western
I saw this movie over 20 years ago and had rather fond memories of it. Catching again on Cinemax this month, I realized how little discernment I had about films back then. This is an utterly ordinary spaghetti western, with absolutely nothing noteworthy about it. Script, direction, acting, photography are all a big blah. Stick with the Sergio Leone westerns!
Eye of God (1997)
Irresponsible independent film that relies upon big-budget stereotypes
Eye of God is a well-crafted independent film that is fatally flawed by its reliance on a current mainstream-film cliche as a central plot element: that any character with religious convictions will be revealed in the course of the film as a psychopath. It demonstrates once more that most filmmakers today have no clue in depicting religious experience in either an authentic or a sympathetic fashion. A waste of talent.
