8ight After (2020)
really enjoyable
This plays on a whole psychological level that got under my skin. I thought Deanna was very compelling as the lead. She had this natural performance that went with the documentary vibe of the film.
The editing stands out to me. Slower paced, but in a good way. It built on the scares that were there. This felt more like an homage to old school horror with more of a modern aesthetic.
Lovely (2003)
INTENSE DRAMA ABOUT ADDICTION
This movie is an amazing 8 minute movie about a girl with an addiction that she will go to any length to get her next fix. Dovie Pettitt gives depth to her performance, and the amazing editing & direction from Trevor Hollen moved me.
Ghost Reader (2001)
killer great short piece
This movie is one of the better short pieces you can see. Even though it was shot on DV, it looks better than most 35mm shorts. The writing is extraordinairy & the direction is even better. A well made movie.
Spotless (2002)
Intense, dark humor
SPOTLESS follows a guy who has become a janitor & harbours great resentment for the guys who tormented him in High School. When he taeks a job at the place where two of them work, he gets his revenge. Asied from George Caleodis, the most riveting performance comes from newcomer DEREK RIMESLSPACH, in his non speaking Tour De Force as one of the tormentors.
Ritual (2001)
JENNIFER ZONACKIS and HARLEY KAPLAN make a movie worth seeing
Jennifer IS the reason to see Ritual. As treasurer of her fanclub, I can say that her performance in Horro moveis is becoming a staple for Indie horror movies.
We take for granted how good HARLEY KAPLAN is. Kudos to Michale Evanichko's movie making skills as they sharpen.
It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books (1988)
A concept movie about the mundane aspects of travel
This is Rick Linklater's actual first movie, pre-Slacker. "It's more Slacker than Slacker was..." - from the liner notes by Richard Linklater himself. He also described it as an attempt to capture the most boring parts of travelling. Shot entirely on Super 8 film, and edited at the local cable access station on Beta, this movie does in fact achieve it's goal.
Richard stars as a no named man who goes from Austin to see his friend by train, bus, and car during summer break from school. Minimal dialogue and mostly serene vistas of America from the window of a train.
