The Accountant (2016)
A bit familiar ...
The Accountant may take a moment, but it will quickly become familiar. It's basically Bourne Identity but instead of Matt Damon it's Ben Affleck and instead of being a super spy who has been trained to kill but has no memory, he's an autistic accountant with a super memory and is a savante at killing people.
The movie is actually not that bad. Affleck always plays himself in films and here we see his range as he plays himself with no facial expressions.
I needed to come up with 142 characters to finish this review. Now I need 76. Ben Affleck was 4 years old in 1976. I thought he was younger.
Ditched (2021)
Good concept - mixed execution
The concept was a pretty good one and the photography is decent. The film is hurt by poor dialogue and stiff performances all around. There's a good film in here, this just isn't the product we're provided.
South of Heaven (2008)
Nice attempt.. Greater failure.
I'm really surprised to see some glowing reviews here on IMDb for this film. While I'm aware that everyone has their own likes and dislikes, I wonder if I saw an entirely different film.
I just saw South of Heaven as part of the Toronto After Dark Film Festival and thought that it was by far the worst showing at the festival. I suspected it was only accepted due to it's international premier credentials which adds a little gusto to the festival.
The film strikes me as an attempt to be artistic and a crafty word-smith by someone who has seen many films that have done this well previously but with no real knowledge of how to do so himself. The entire production comes across as a good treatment that the writer was unable to bring into fruition as a complex film.
There was a handful of interesting characters (the thugs) who were marginalized at best in an attempt to focus on the least interesting of the group (Mad Dog). The writer (I believe) stood up and asked people to feel free to laugh during the film, but only a few in the theater took him up on this offer. In fact on the side I sat on the entire row in front bailed half way through and the gentleman behind me fell asleep and added the only real interesting aspect of the film.
The kidnap and rape (continuously) of a 16 year old girl was handled as a joke and while it was an attempt at dark humor it played off as nothing of the like.
The goods other than the thugs? Becky's sister was interesting, the make-up on the brother was great. The film was colorful, unfortunately the script was not.
Pitch (1997)
Great little documentary!
I really enjoyed this documentary about Kenny and Spencer's attempt to pitch "The Dawn". Was a great look at how outsiders try to get to the inside to make it big.
The story was put together well and organized in an interesting manner that made the film flow well. Certainly worth a watch. My only complaint is that their appeared to be no closure. Perhaps that is part of the point. We expect it but in reality that is not what happened (or usually happens).
The film is also a great way to see the personality of Kenny and Spencer outside of their Canadian television show. You can see a bit of what is yet to come.
I look forward to a chance to see The Papal Chase.
Lilo & Stitch (2002)
Disney's adventure in ADHD
The first twenty minutes with the little girl character in this movie gave me a headache. I can't imagine what viewers children would be like when they got home.
This manic little kid is supposed to be their hero and role model. Scary stuff disney.
The Matrix (1999)
Amazing Effects and an Interesting Story
A very sci-fi'ish film. A normal action fan won't like the film much. But if you found Blade Runner or Dark City interesting this film will intrigue you. The effects are just absolutely amazing. The action segments are exciting and well done. It reminded me of a John Woo film goes Sci-Fi. I really enjoyed the film and found the storyline equally interesting.
Huang mian lao hu (1974)
So bad it's cool!
This movie is so bad I couldn't stop laughing. I've seen it like a dozen times because I find new screw ups every time! Why is there sirens in the police station? Why do the bad guys follow the cops while driving in front of them? How come punches, kicks, chains, 2X4's etc all make the same thump noise? The Best part: Chuck Norris's fake hairy chest. It looks like a vest. That can't be real. Plus why is Chuck dubbed? Does he even speak chinese?
DNA (1996)
One of Dacascos' better films - but still cheesy
Dacascos turns in one of his better performances in the total Predator rip off. I mean there was scenes that look like they were cut and pasted right from Predator. The special effects were generally good for a 'B' movie, but there was a few scenes where it looked like they just ran out of money (i.e. the holicopter crash). Not bad if you're in the mood for a little no thinking 'b' sci fi...
Legend of the Mummy (1998)
Not bad, but nothing special
This isn't bad for direct to video fare. The ending kind of falls apart a bit. It's not as good as Shadow Builders though...
Cube (1997)
Fantastic voyage into the human psyche
As a student of psychology I can really appreciate this film. Watching this movie really makes me wonder how I would react in a similar situation. I just think it's fantastic that such an intriguing and inventive story can keep you engrossed in a film while limited to only three sets (2 of which are only seen for a few minutes). It's nice to see all the canadian (no-name) actors giving such steller performances.
Nightwatch (1997)
Good thriller, BUT...
This was a top notch thriller with some great moments. The friend is just down right creepy & there is some moments where I am very glad I'm not on the nightwatch. My only problem with the movie is the early revelation of the killer. For some reason a lot of movies do this. I like it when the killer isn't known to the last few minutes...
The Eighteenth Angel (1997)
Fantastic Genre Fare
I'm quite surprised by the low ratings users have given this movie. I think of all the direct to video genre films of late The Eighteenth Angel is the pick of the crop. Great acting, an original plot, and great surprisingly good visual effects combine for a great intriguing film.
Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)
The "Odd Number Curse" Broken!
Though not the best addition to the series, Star Trek Insurrection provides a fresh look comparable to 'The Voyage Home'. It is visually stunning, the plot is original and good, and there is some great one liners put in there. The finally was not as climatic as it could have been and some of the banter dialogue seemed forced. However, I was very pleased with the film and after First Contact I had high expectations, they were met.
