Dirty Work (1998)
MacDonald at his finest
To anyone who thought this movie was stupid and tasteless, I just have one thing to say, this is Norm MacDonald we're talikng about here, what did you expect? This film is hilarious if you're a fan of MacDonald's, if you're not, don't expect Oscar material. It's too bad some people take this kinda movie seriously, the whole thing is just one huge joke, and I think that you go out and see this one with that frame of mind, you'll enjoy a lot more. I'm a big fan of Sandler, Farley, Spade, Myers, all those SNL guys, so I thought this movie was good in its own sick twisted way.
Scream 2 (1997)
Better than the original
A lot of people disagreed with me on this, but I think this film was better than the original. The characters were more drawn out and the killers were a lot more creative. I'm not a huge fan of horror movies so when I saw the first film I was disappointed because I heard it was so good (I think a lot of that came from Barrymore fans) and I found out that it rather sounded cool with horror movie references and supposedly savvy and witty dialogue exchanged by the most annoying teenagers I've ever seen in a film and display blood and, literally, guts all over the screen. I didn't find it original, I found it to be full of itself. I went to see the sequel and thought that it was a little more thought out than its predecessor. I was actually shocked to find out who the killer was at the end. And, another thing, I thought it, at least, tried to be different from #1. After seeing 2 or 3 of the Jason movies, I realized, you've seen one episode of the series, you've seen them all. Now, I went to see this on my own free will, and I was glad I did. Now, I just wish this wasn't the sequel but the first in the series and that Scream 1 was never made.
The Rainmaker (1997)
The best John Grisham adaptation
I truly feel that this was the best adaptation of one of John Grisham's books. It was funny, sad and had endearing characters, the only bad thing to it was that it was very slow-paced, but what can you expect from Coppola. Damon and DeVito are a perfect team fighting against that corrupt agency, and Jon Voight was very easy to dislike. I found myself rooting for the heroes although I already knew how it was going to end. I could've done without the subplot about the scorned wife (Claire Danes), though. But the film as a whole was truly something special.
Snake Eyes (1998)
Good, but not the greatest
OK, besides the horribly bad ending and, at times, really laughable dialogue, Snake Eyes is pretty good. The plot is interesting (although much of it is given away in the trailers) and I like the way it's told by DePalma and Koepp. The acting was good by Cage, but I think much of the credit should be given to Sinise (one of the greatest actors--ever!) who really keeps the action moving swiftly. All in all, it was a good film, ultimately forgettable, but still, a good film nonetheless.
Kingpin (1996)
Really laugh-out-loud funny
I went to see There's Something About Mary and liked it so much that I decided to rent Kingpin for the hell of it. I'll probably get into some heat for saying this, but, I actually liked this one more than Mary. Harrelson, Quaid, Murray, etc. are all funnier than Dillon or Diaz or even Stiller, I think they have a lot more comedic talent than any of Mary's various players. Don't get me wrong though, I liked Mary, I just loved Kingpin. It's a shame that Mary turned out to be the money maker and almost no one's ever heard of this one. I hope that when people go see Mary, they'll do their research on the Farrelly brothers and check this one out. I just have one request to the brothers for their next film, don't hire that Chris Elliot guy, he just really sucks.
The Wrong Guy (1997)
Funny to the core
I love The Kids In The Hall, but I truly felt that Brain Candy was a really bad movie, neither funny, or even playful. So when I saw Dave Foley promoting this film on a Canadian TV Talk Show, I thought it sounded funny but remembered how badly I was burned the first time by the former Kid, I was very wary about this one. But I saw the video box in the store and right there I knew I should give it a try. I'm really glad because it turned out to be one of the funniest movies I've ever seen in my entire life. David Foley's hilarious, so is Dave Higgins and Jennifer Tilly, everyone involved did a good job at providing gargantuan laughs. Everyone I recommended it to also enjoyed it heavily, and I'm telling anyone who's reading this right now, check this out, you'll really enjoy it.
