Halifax f.p.: Isn't It Romantic (1998)
Good quality Australian mystery
Rebecca Gibney seems perfect in her role as Jane Halifax. This film, the latest in the series, follows Halifax as she attempts to make some sense out of a killer who murders young model hopefuls in brutal and bizarre fashions. Americans will miss out on this very watchable film, as it was shown in Australia only.
13 Gantry Row (1998)
Thought-provoking and sinister film
Another Aussie masterpiece, this delves into the world of the unknown and the supernatural, and it does very well. It doesn't resort to the big special effects overkill like American flicks, it focuses more on emotional impact. A relatively simple plot that Rebecca Gibney & Co. bring to life. It follows the story of a couple who buy an old house that was supposedly home to a very old woman who never went outside, and whose husband disappeared in mysterious circumstances a century ago. Strange things begin to happen in the house, and John Adam begins to turn into the man who disappeared, who was actually a mass murderer. Highly recommended. 8/10
John Wayne Bobbitt Uncut (1994)
Crap.
This movie is pretty bad. It is a very low-budget porno with appalling camerawork and bad sex. Some of the girls are pretty, but you don't get to see anything and...well, it's budget.
Moby Dick (1998)
Oh god, how boring can you get?!!
This American-Australian production was worse than reading the actual book! I had never seen a Moby Dick movie or read the book (even though I had tried!), so I sat down in front of the box to watch the first part of this mini-series. One hour in, I was still asking myself, when does it start? Unbelievably slow, with bad special effects and restricted scenery, the only good point about this remake was the acting. All involved were good, and it's a pity the team behind the movie didn't do such a good job. It may have attracted a wider audience for the second part. I looked at the votes and I can't believe that anyone gave it more than 5 out of ten, let alone 10. Did we watch the same film?
Showgirls (1995)
Slow, boring and lengthy
I really don't see what all the fuss is about. This movie was supposed to be one of the most explicit films made for cinemas, in that it was given an NC-17 rating in America (or something - it's R-rated over here). But it was too long, most of it was in shadow anyway, and there was not much to it. Basically it was a case of 'how far can we go without it being pornographic?' I don't think they went that far at all, and it could have easily gotten an MA rating in Australia. All there was was sex. Tell me how 'Species II' got an MA rating, yet 'Showgirls' is R-rated. I haven't yet met anyone who has liked this absolute shocker of a flick.
