The Jackal (1997)
absolute guff...
...and a complete waste of time I could not bear to watch more than an hour and any movie that can't compel after an hour is lost. It is one of the most cliched, dead-pan , badly acted , stereotypical, plot-less and shallow films you will ever see and for a film bearing the moniker of The Jackal it is a disgrace to a great original.
Hideous Kinky (1998)
And this is all about....
I have no idea what this film was meant to be about. I am sure the original script had some destination but I think the Director got a little lost in the souks of Marrakech and gave-up on the plot. Great setting for a movie (Morocco) but please remember that we do expect a story of a little more purpose, depth, excitement and direction.
Pleasantville (1998)
Very entertaining, if a little predictable
Very entertaining, if a little predictable. I like the play on colour (sorry,...color) which gives it the twist it needs. Very good acting performances from all the cast and nicely shot, capturing its target genre perfectly.
A Bug's Life (1998)
A great follow-up to Toy Story, BUT....
A great follow-up to Toy Story, BUT....this lacks the depth of characterisation achieved in Toy Story, maybe because of its fast pace, which I am sure left many of the audience behind, young and old. The visuals are amazing and give a glimpse of what is to come as the technology develops. It was hard to really appreciate all the visual detail in one showing so definitely worth a second visit....full marks to Pixar who trumped tired-ols Antz this time round.
Fang lang (1997)
Slow, personal and....boring
I am not familiar with Chinese movies so I have no idea how this compares with others of the genre. Strikes me as a movie from a young director searching to express some personal experiences. Very slow pace with few (any?) noticeable change of pace or much to re-attract the attention of the audience. Film school stuff. I am sure he learnt a lot from making it but I can't recommend it as worthy of the time it takes to view it.
Happiness (1998)
Provocative yes, truthful no....
Well this certainly proved a revelation. Comedy, may be, but as father it certainly was a disturbing reminder that the world we live in can be very deceiving. I have to give full marks for bringing so many raw issues to the surface in such a candid and straight-forward way. I felt very uncomfortable during the paedophile scenes and I have to take issue with the one-sided perspective provided by Todd. The pain, suffering and damage to the victims should not be over-looked. Too much sympathy for the protagonist is misplaced, whether in real life or the cinema. This is rated a 12 in France...I can only assume the French censors suffer from overwork...
Meet Joe Black (1998)
Bradd Pitt dies and returns as Bo Derek...
No wonder Anthony Hopkins decided to retire from acting after seeing himself in this bloated glob of Hollywood bilge. Sure, it makes good entertainment (in the true tradition of television) but I really can't excuse the screen writer from allowing so much cliched dialogue in one film. I haven't seen such a bad performance from a major actor like Brad Pitt in a long time - sort of a male Bo Derek, finger in mouth and all. Get acting lessons from Anthony before he retires for good. The only thing that made me stay was Claire Forlani who was positively edible...
