The Muse (1999)
Cute.
One word sums up this Albert Brooks film: cute. Brooks plays a struggling writer who finally finds his muse (Sharon Stone), a demanding, obnoxious woman claiming to be the daughter of Zeus. The script is not great, but there are some funny moments and industry inside jokes. The Martin Scorsese cameo was funny but the rest were annoying.
Bottom line: Wait till it comes out on video or see it with a big group.
Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999)
Typical Teen Movie with Slightly Better Acting
WARNING: ONE SLIGHT SPOILER
Why pay $8 to watch a Kevin Williamson movie when you can watch Dawson's Creek for free every Wednesday at 8? There are very few differences between his movies and his show: terrible dialogue, flavor-of-the-month stars with minimal talent, and a teen-angst theme reminiscent of John Hughes. However, there is something guiltily appealing. You want to know what will happen to the characters. Teaching Mrs. Tingle is no exception. The dialogue is awful, the end is predictable and the cast is a mosaic of WB prime-time shows (7th Heaven's Barry Watson and Dawsons' Katie Holmes).
However, there are some excellent performances from Helen Mirren and Marisa Coughlan. Katie Holmes and Barry Watson, however, are flat.
Goodfellas (1990)
The BEST Mob Movie
Martin Scorsese delivers yet another fine example of film making at its best. Goodfellas has all the elements of a great film: an entertaining script, a talented cast and effective use of cinematic devices such as still photography and voice-over narration. One of the highlights of Goodfellas is the dialogue, with well-written narration ("How could I go back to school and pledge allegance to the flag and sit through good government bullshit?") and rapid-fire conversations. The soundtrack is the finishing touch: it creates a "gangsta" tone and makes the whole thing more authentic.
Goodfellas is arguably the best mob movie. I believe that it surpasses Coppola's The Godfather because it is more entertaining, better written and much of the acting (with the exception of Brando) surpasses performances in The Godfather. Anyone who wants to be entertained or see an example of a well-executed film with a good concept should see Goodfellas.
Repas de bébé (1895)
One of the first films ever made--interesting to watch.
One of the first films ever made, the film seems extremely primitive: there is no dialogue or plot or characters. However, in 1895, it was a new technological breakthrough. It is interesting to watch; the Lumière brothers were the first film makers and pretty much invented the technology, along with Edison.
