The Missing (I) (2003)
I liked this A LOT.
29 February 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I don't understand why so many people seem to dislike this film. It has an awful lot going for it, a superb cast, gripping story line , much accuracy, excellent direction and cinematography, superb scenery, not to mention the darker side of Native American beliefs. *****POSSIBLE SPOILER.... Tommy Lee Jones was superb as Cate Blanchets estranged father, and the fact that it was hinted that Lilli, the 'missing' daughter was concieved in less than ideal circumstances was, I think pivotal to the animosity Blanchets character felt toward her father, the fact that he was not there to protect her when she needed him. The fact that Jones was not expecting to be forgiven, but had in fact turned up when he did as the result of being bitten by a rattlesnake and as part of his 'cure', suggested by a medicine man, was that he should not eat rabbit for a year and go look after his family, shows that he had turned up for purely selfish reasons, much the same motivation as to why he left in the first place. **********The complex and compelling characters are acted superbly by a first class cast, without exception, and the deep and more sinister back ground of the brujo man gives this an element not often seen in a film of this genre. I love Westerns, though this film is much more, it is a superb study of human interaction, in a difficult and brutal era in the history of the American people. Ron Howard is to be congratulated for giving the depth to these characters that so many classic westerns dont.

simply one of the very best

I have loved this film since I first saw it a long long time ago, there just aren't the superlatives to describe it. Judging by the VAST majority of viewers comments there are an awful lot of people agree. It has everything, soundtrack, actors, characters, scenery, plot, humour, story line, and just enough of a moral to make the point. If you haven't yet seen 'Priscilla', why not? It's wonderful.

absolutely wonderful

This is a classic in every sense of the word. I can't think of one negative thing to say about this film. It is so beautifully done, the direction, the acting, the cinematography and the story, while fairly simple is compelling. It was a joy to see Tom Hanks be less than wholesome, he did it so well, I initially had my doubts that he could carry it off, how wrong I was! Everybody was perfectly cast, and the acting superb. I think young Tyler Hoechlin has a stunning future if his portrayal of young Micheal is anything to go by. A wonderful film, and such a pleasure to see a film that doesn't rely on SFX, and slick computer graphics. These 'real' actors demonstrate their craft with supreme skill.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Any one who is wary of foreign language films should see this. Very difficult to classify but if you take the atmosphere of Sleepy Hollow, the action and cinematography of the Matrix, the sumptuousness of 1492: Conquest of Paradise, the pleasure of the French language, a ripping good story, a cast that is very easy on the eye, whether you are male or female, and sort of mix them all together you get a result that is this film. I dont know what else to say, certainly one of the most enjoyable films I have ever seen , and I've seen a lot. Sadly it seemed to be on only a limited release. so go see it before it is removed from the few cinemas showing it.

what a disappointment.

Well, what can I say. I was looking forward to this movie from day one, but it just doesn't live up to expectations.Compared with the original, it just doesn't have the magic. It was lacking in the humour that made The Mummy so entertaining. Stephen Sommers appears to have gone along with the philosophy that if you have a winning theme, you can forsake story line and characterisation and depth if you throw enough sfx at the audience. It was over long and so packed with sfx that it stands as a testament to the effects peoples art and little else. With the cast available this could have been a cracker, shame it wasn't. Dwayne Johnsons appearence was so over publicised, you see his whole "performance" in the trailers. This could have been so good.

This has got to be one of the best. This film contained everything that one would go to a cinema for. The story line was fairly simple, but so well done. The cast suited the roles , the acting was excellent and the cinematography was wonderful. What can be said that hasn't already? This is a film I'd watch again and again and again..........
