Mission: Impossible II (2000)
extremely tedious
This was an extremely boring movie...the last quarter of the film had some excitement to it, but it was not entertaining enought to justify the first three quarters of the movie. I was also incredibly bored by the performance (or lack thereof) of Thandie Newton. She was in the majority of the film but only had about 15 lines. I grew rapidly weary of her just standing there, not saying a word, supposedly looking breathtakingly beautiful and noble....give me a break. Save yourselves a few dollars and wait for it to appear on video as this movie was not worth the price of admission.
Emma (1996)
Gwyneth Paltrow a wonderful surprise
I would have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I am a great fan of English-style movies and was sure that casting a Hollywood actress in the title role would completely ruin the film. Fortunately, I was wrong.
Gwyneth Paltrow was funny and wonderful in the role of Emma and I have developed a new-found respect for this actress.
White Christmas (1954)
Magic !
I have watched this movie countless times over the years and it remains my all-time favorite.. Even now I cannot watch the last scene - when General Waverley enters the dining room and sees his old troop - without becoming teary-eyed. It is a great shame that Hollywood no longer makes movies of this quality .
The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
The first time is always the best
I love watching movies, and I find that I am turning more and more to the 'classics' section of my video store for the type of entertainment I am willing to sit through. It seems that everyone has run out of new, fun and creative ideas and are making more and more remakes of old classics. Today we are deluged with promotional material for the new movie "you've got mail" but I would much rather watch the original film 'the shop around the corner'. It is funny, charming and full of wit and although it may have a more laid-back feel to it, I found it infinitely superior. If you want to get away from the Hollywoodization of the old classics, find this movie in your local video store and enjoy!
