American Beauty (1999)
Bad and boring
Sometimes, it needs courage to criticize a movie considered by most critics as excellent, with many Oscar nominations. So I'll have to say it: this movie isn't good. It's just a waste of time. Some quotes in the dialogue are interesting, but everything else is low average. And the ending confirms the failure.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984)
Mr Sherlock Brett, I presume
Wow! If science fiction was reality, I would say Arthur Conan Doyle first saw Jeremy Brett, then created Sherlock Holmes, on his picture! Being a Sherlock Holmes fan (rather an expert), I may say I was shocked the first time I saw Brett playing Holmes. Never could I have imagined such a perfection. I even dare say, forget about the plot, forget about the movie itself, and just watch Brett and enjoy. This, of course, must not make us forget the excellent adaptation of each story, too faithful sometimes.
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970)
A beautiful tribute to the secret side of his life
Being a Sherlock Holmes fan (I'd rather say expert!), I really enjoyed this movie, although I did not appreciate the character of Watson, presented as funny and not intelligent, which is not true (remember, he is the one who narrated the Sherlock Holmes stories). The main idea of the movie is interesting: was Holmes a homosexual? why was he that much doubtful about women? was he ever in love? The plot is also very attractive: for the first time in his career, Holmes would fail to fully use his computer-brain, because, and for the first time in his career, his feelings will be guiding him, although the mystery seems easy to resolve for a mind like his, and this is proved by the intervention of his brother, Mycroft. Robert Stephens perfectly incarnates the role of Sherlock Holmes, much better than Basil Rathbone (but still very far from the excellent Jeremy Brett). Melancholy, romance, mystery and suspense: a very nice combination. See this movie even if you know nothing about Sherlock Holmes. You will just love it.
Le dîner de cons (1998)
Funny, funny, so funny
It's been years since we have laughed that much. The screenplay mixes all kinds of comic arts, the situation, the mime and, especially the dialogue. The story is an adaptation from the theatre, and most of the movie takes place in one room. The successful businessman invites an anonymous guest to dinner, just because he is dumb, to make fun of him. But things change, in a sarcastic crescendo, where laughter becomes uninterrupted. Do not miss it. It is a masterpiece
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
The best Dracula movie
Coppola made it. The most faithful version to the original Bram Stoker's novel. The movie is perfect, actors are excellent. Even if you don't like horror, you'll be delighted. And remember the unforgettable scene of Dracula's brides: even if you see the movie just for this, you will not be disappointed.
2010 (1984)
a good sequel to 2001
I think this is a good movie. Unfortunately, it suffered from the comparison with the masterpiece 2001. The questions that remained unanswered in 2001 were cleverly treated and the conclusion is not disappointing at all.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
The best movie ever made ?
One of the best movies of the history of cinema. How can we explain in few lines this masterpiece, which starts from the dawn of humanity, where each scene is a masterpiece of painting, to the waltz of the spacial ships, to the mythological conclusion. The world is divided into two groups, those who have seen 2001 and those who have not. Why don't you chose your group?
