Dirty Dancing (I) (1987)
10/10
finding the song in our soul
13 June 1999
As an 7 or 8 year old, when this movie came out on video, I watched it every day with my next door neighbor (and best friend), literally. I will always remember that, through all the bad times, getting together to watch Dirty Dancing. Now that I'm a older, technically an "adult", I rented it to watch again, having forgotten the movie for the most part (except the dancing, me and my friend knew all the moves), even though I've seen it I don't know how many times. Now I understand what is so absolutely great about this movie. It's about a chick who knows how to stand up for herself. About a guy who's had some lucky breaks but is afraid to leave the line drawn for him because he feels that it could be all lost in one single step. About family relationships. About coming of age. About BEING WHO YOU REALLY ARE. Sometimes we disappoint people because we don't measure up to their expectations. This movie shows that its more important we follow our "soul's song". It's about "young love", the kind of love you can throw away your life for. And it's about making a stand. And it is DEFINITELY about terrific dancing. Egads, I wish I could move like that. This is definitely among my top ten favorite movies.

a great tongue in cheek pirate adventure
8 May 1999
In the spirit of pirate movies before it, not only does this movie have great action, but excellent witty dialogue and fun characters. And the hero(ine) is a smart, tough female. It's always great to be able to root for a group of baddies. Just tense enough, just funny enough, and just all around great. Genius director, and Geena Davis is wonderful, as always.

a hilarious must see
4 May 1999
The dialogue is great, witty, and enticing. I just sat down to watch this movie since it was on TV and someone told me I should really watch it. I'm so glad I did! Now I'll have to find it for my video collection. There are very few disappointments in this movie (the only ones I can think of myself are the musical interruptions... they did nothing to further the plot and were kind of corny). Great delay and fun, gentle tension is created by the eloquent dialogue. Adolphe gets and A+ from me! The perfect hero-to-the-rescue. The chicks could've been stronger characters, but considering the time period that'd be a lot to ask. Fun ending, leaves much to the imagination. Overall, a great movie.

Tank Girl (1995)
10/10
killer movie with a strong female character
24 January 1999
I adore this movie. It's in my top 10 favorite movies of all time.

I really like movies that portray strong, perhaps rebellious, female characters. Tank Girl (Rebecca) definitely fits the bill, a witty, take-no-crap chick who leads the way with an almost nonchalant air. And I love Tank Girl's hair and outfits. She doesn't care what other people think about her.

The writing is excellent, I think it's a great adaptation from the comics (one of the few comics I have ever read). The witty word play is fun, the story is amusing and interesting (well done as a post-apocolypse movie, if not scientifically correct) and the characters are great, especially how Tank Girl holds everything together, and Jet Girl develops through the movie.

Benny & Joon (1993)
from someone who's mentally ill...
24 January 1999
I really identify with this movie, and with Joon. I myself am mentally ill (in fact, disabled by it). I don't think it matters that her mental illness is unspecified... so many mental illnesses overlap in real life, and often DO go unspecified even if the person is counselling.

I am mentally ill and (as birds of a feather flock together) know many people who are also mentally ill. As for it being representation of what it's really like to be or live with a mentally ill person, you can't really lump such an experience together. Mentally ill people vary just as much as "normal" people do.

Some of the details in this movie are great. They depicted Joon as a rounded character, a creative, sensitive, intelligent person. This is often the case with mentally ill people. I love the eccentricities of the characters. I think the details, writing, and everything about this movie are just wonderful. I've seen it many times.

Most people who I know who have seen this movie adore it. I think it's great.
