Fight Club (1999)
The movie Friedrich Nietzsche would probably freak out with!
24 June 2001
This is my favorite movie of all times, so please, before you start reading this review, keep in mind that.

I mean, this movie is a pure & direct attempt of shocking the establishment, it's like a bloody punch in your teeth, a reality present naked & ugly as it can be. I read a review of this guy named Derek Dammann (or something), who said that this movie is fulfilled with plot holes. Mr. Dammann, there is a way of difference between reading a masterpiece in a literal sense, or an allegorical sense. This movie is a constant irony, can't you see it? It's an irony about everything, it's an eternal denial in jest code about our western civilization way of living, more simple but as catchy as any philosophical theory, for me!

For all this, plus I loved its speed & rawness, & all the camera tricks (& hidden ideas & images that makes this film deserve more than a view to criticize it, Mr. Dammann), I consider it one of the truly masterpieces of filming in the last 20 years.

Where is the plot? There is no plot.

Where is the main character? There is no main character.

Where is the happy ending? There is no happy ending.

Its just a War movie? Could be, but for me is one of the best movies I ever saw. As rude & raw as a real war, "The thin red line" really introduce yourself into the Second World War with violence. With fear & with blood. With suffering, with impatience (the same impatience this group of soldiers felt searching for their enemy) & with valor, with courage. That's the whole movie.

Do you want famous actors? Well yeah, you can have some (Sean Penn, John Travolta, Woody Harrelson, Nick Nolte, John Cusack, George Clooney, & many others).

Do you want action? Of course there is action in this movie. But most of all you will have reality. Not all the soldiers come back home. We know it now with "The thin red line". As I said, I loved this movie. A piece of art. An historical file for future generations. This is war, kids.

Mr. Malick, bravo.

At the beginning my eyes were wide open; at the end, wide shut...
14 September 1999
What else can I say? I SLEPT, DAMMIT! Yes, I did, I did, I DID !!!, and the TV, & the all media also, has the fault about inviting people to see this film only showing the erotic scenes & all that thing about Stanley Kubrick's last masterpiece. The first 30 minutes of the film was only Tom & Nicole, showing their lives together, in a EDTV way. Then, there comes this kind of pseudo suspense plot with kitsch dots that nothing has to envy a 4:00 AM HBO bad movie. It was even pathetic. What did I like? We could rescue some of the scenes like the whole orgy one, because it was raw, shocking & surprising, remembering me I don't know why some Passolini's movie. And the end? Awful. I think he finally deserves to be cheated by his wife. His character sucks. Mr. Kubrick, I must say this your last movie was a very good Halloween threat, specially enjoyed I think for the people who liked "The orange clockwork". Nice piece of cake you threw them in their faces, Stan.

White Lies (1998 TV Movie)
Lookin' for friends
12 September 1999
It's very usual to get involved in any kind of movements attracted by friends, money or anything else. Specially in our youth period of life, this things are very common. I am young so I know how this things are. That's why I understood this movie in my reality. & I liked it. Not because I am a neo nazi or something like that, but I felt it very close about young movements & stuff. The movie was pretty good. I didn't realized it was a Canadian production, so I guess this is my first Canadian movie saw. & the impression was such cool. But there are a few things I can't get in this movie. Is the old lady of NIM senile or maybe crazy? Celebrating Christmas in a Nazi way? Come on...

Humans + Zergs = F.U.N.
1 August 1999
This is a 100% Sci-fi movie, & in that point I think this movie works. Does anybody like to play that PC game named "Starcraft"? THIS IS YOUR MOVIE !!!! Humans VS. Zergs !!!! A Starcraft fan's dream !!!!!! If you want to pass a boredom with a very fun movie, you won't be disappointed watching Starship Troopers. A very fancy film. For the whole family (except for its violence, of course).

Calendar Girl (1993)
Just like any teens movie of the 50's
25 July 1999
This movie, although of its year of made, is quite close of any teenager-light-stupid-vacation movie made in the 50's. That was the idea? I guess so. Three youngsters deeply in love with Marilyn Monroe travel to Hollywood to meet her. That's all. Jason Priestley is the leader of them (he is the protagonist, by the way), playing the role of the typical unbearable & arrogant American High school popular kid, who thinks that can deal with any chick round there. Jerry O'Connel plays again as the poor little fool dominated by his friends (do you remember "Stand by me"?) & the other guy, Gabriel Olds (sorry but, who is he? Never heard of him) is the peacemaker of the group. It's a very light comedy, & that's all. Nothing too hard to understand.

Stand by Me (1986)
This is one of my favorite movies
25 July 1999
Made in 1986, "Stand by me" shows all the issues about growing up, specially relationed with morality & ethic. It's written by a genius, Stephen King, & acted by great young actors ( who later were quite famous) like River Phoenix (a kid who was made to grow up fast by force & circumstances), Corey Feldman (the typical crazy & hyperkinetical friend), Jerry O'Connel (the group's "mascot") & a great performance of this kid named Wil Wheaton, who is the protagonist of the film.

The plot is about this group of 4 friends who decide to start a quest searching for a dead guy's body near a forest. They have to hurry up because another group of friends, older that them (& headed by the great Kiefer Sutherland, playing again, as the whole 80's decade, the role of the teen bad guy) are searching for the same thing.

But the real matter of the movie are the dialogues & the developments of its characters, specially the little friends.

Gordie is a great character, as the fragile desperate 12 years old kid who wants to escape from his family (he thinks they don't love him) & his bitter past (he feels really pity, even guilty for the death of his brother).

The role of River Phoenix, as Chris Chambers, is also awesome, showing us how hard could be for a kid the fact of growing up alone, in a hard way.

Jerry O'Connel , as Vern, is the funny & tender point of the picture, making laugh for his ways of seeing life, just thinking that life is still a game.

Corey Feldman, as Teddy Duchamp, is terrific. This actor, who once was famous just like Macaulay Culkin & then later disappeared, shows all his arsenal of dramatic profile playing a kid who is crazy about military stuff (he likes to brag that his father was in Vietnam) & acts like he is not afraid of nothing, but in the deep of his heart he know that he is so scary like any of their friends.

Other famous actors in this movie are Kiefer Sutherland (playing the bad, bad, bad Ace Merrill), John Cusack (as Gordie's dead older brother) & Richard Dreyfuss as Gordie when adult. There are also great & funny parts of the movie (who can forget the great story of the Pie contest?) & also a lot of dramatic issues, even about existence (the reaction of Gordie after seeing the dead kid's body).

Resuming, I think "Stand by me" is a GREAT, GREAT movie, also with a great theme (When the night has come, & the land is dark...). Try to watch & I think you will agree when they say "The best friends of our life are those when we are 12".

Blues & Dublin
24 July 1999
I was sit very bored a hot July afternoon when I turned on the TV & I began to watch a movie. At the beginning, it was a simple cable movie, nothing too relevant. But as the minutes began to pass I was more & more interested in it. It's a great movie, very fun to see. The plot is quite simple: a group of guys that want to start a band, & all the process of formation, development & division of the band, named The Commitments. Also shows the different aspects on the life of this guys, including the manager, who seems to be the protagonist of the movie (Jimmy Rabbitte). There are great performances like Deco Cuffe, the singer, who sings like the angels but behaves in a very arrogant, stupid & childish way ( Is this guy really a pro singer???), Imelda (gorgeous), Joey "the lips" (like an old wolf teaching the younger cubs), etc. Also I have to say that in this movie appears, although in a secondary role, one of the most beautiful women I ever saw: Andrea Corr. Andrea, here is one of your humble servants...Can I say I love you? HEHE

The Mummy (1999)
124 minutes of fun featuring a lost Egyptian city, caricaturish characters & a popcorn orgy...
22 July 1999
This movie was really, really fun. I enjoyed it a lot. All that I wanted to see in this movie I found it with great pleasure for me. A lot of F/X, an epic plot (that's my debility, epic stories), funny characters (I laughed a lot with some ridiculous but efficient roles like Jonathan, Beni & one or two "Fraserian" stupidities that we are all accustomed) & 2 goddesses right fallen from the Olympus: Patricia Velazquez (Anck-Su-Namum)& Rachel Weisz (Evi). This was the first time that I saw this two beauties on the screen, & I was very amazed & drooling (as most of the male audience) with the introducing scene of Anck-Su-Namun. I just said " Oh-m-y-G-o-d!". She was absolutely perfect. But also Ms. Weisz has to be recognized as another fallen angel. She is perfect too. Returning to the male actors, I think Arnold Vosloo deserves the most of the credits. I know he was very helped with the whole set of FX on its role, but anyways I think he acted damn well so what the hell. He really looked like an Egyptian High Priest...I don't know if some people are agree with me but some actors have historical faces. I don't know if you know what i mean, but some people, only for their look, can interpret historical or ancient characters, & I think , as i said, that Arnold Vosloo really looks like an Egyptian prince or something, as well as Patricia Velazquez looks like an Egyptian babe too. Also I REALLY liked a lot the beginning of the movie, showing how was Egypt 3000 years ago. A really awesome scene. And I think that's all, but I have a question for myself: What could happen if we put Harrison Ford instead Brendan Fraser & some Afrika Korps Nazi fellas there...Could be this another Indiana Jones' movie? "Indiana Jones & the curse of the mummy"? Who knows...

Nowhere (1997)
Art, twisted & morbid visions, drugs, sex (straight & bi) & social critic all put in a blender...
28 June 1999
"My goodness !"....This simply phrase resumes my impression after seeing "Nowhere". Totally shocking. Totally raw. Totally freaky also. But i liked it a lot. As a comic book in motion, Nowhere captures this essence also with shades of Pop art of the '90, a lot of the MTV culture ( reminds me a band called The Dandy Warhols, that could fit perfectly in this film) & a lot of other insinuations & links that could fill a very large trivia page about this movie. A lot of very known actors here appear playing some good but short roles (John Ritter, Beverly D'Angelo, Heather Graham, Christina Applegate, etc.), as well as some fetish people from media (Tracy Lords, the vocalist of the Butthole Surfers) & some other guys like the Brewer brothers or that guy that makes videoclips, Stephane Sednaoui. The plot is a little confussing, and, sometimes, childish & nonsense ( just check the final sce ne with Dark & his loverboy on the bed or the whole appearing of that saurus doing nothing) but also there are some great, great scenes like Bart crying in front of the TV meanwhiles Egg is doing the same, all bleeding. As i said, i liked this movie a lot, specially for all its visual features. I give it a 7. It's a cool movie.

I must admit I believed this hoax at the beggining
9 June 1999
Ok I believed it at first. You see here in Chile, when this film was recently released, appeared a so-called UFOLOGIST in a TV show telling that this movie ( or whatever it is) was true, so I was dying to see it & comprobate it. When I saw this production, i was shocked at the beggining, but I realized then that it was a joke or hoax. It's impossible that a 16 years old kid could film scenes with that temper...my god neither a pro could film like that ! I must admit also that the performances of this movie was very variated. I must celebrate the incredible acting of the little girl ...it was awesome ! but another ones, like the black boyfriend of the McPherson sister or 1 of the brothers really sucked. But as the guy who commented this movie before me I have the same question : What in the world was this?

Allan Rickman... what else could I say? BRILLIANT ! I never saw an historical character played so well... As well as Ian McKellen plays in a very big way the tsar´s role. Now I wonder why Mr. Rickman isnt so famous & recognized as he deserves...I have seen a couple of movies of him like "Mesmer" & I think he is a great actor. Sometimes the Academy fails 2 I give it a 8

The Chase (1994)
An awesome movie & a fine movie to kill a lil time
28 May 1999
Ok this movie is not a WOW-GIVE-IT-AN-OSCAR movie but at least I had fun seeing it. The plot is very simple : a guy who is recently released from jail suffers the consequences of a comprehensible paranoia & kidnaps a wealthy young lady. She gets the Stockholm syndrome ( falls in love with his kiddnapper)... All the movie happens in the highway ( so it's a road movie isnt it? ) & we could see the perspective of Jack & Natalie & the cops 1... This movie could be just any other cable movie if we couldn't see there famous musicians acting like Henry Rollins, Anthony & Flea from Red Hot Chilli Peppers, etc... I must confess I enjoyed the soundtrack like a child with a candy...All my favorite bands ! Bad Religion, Rancid, NOFX & Offspring !

Non-Economically viable or how America makes people sick
27 April 1999
Saturation. Desperation. A crowded & hot afternoon makes a guy crazy. He realized how America is really acting with people like him. He is a puppet. He feels like one of them. The society uses him & then denies his identity. He realized that he is not the only one, in fact, he was the one that truly opened the eyes, instead the others still follow the path of the government. A psychological drama. America seen by a fed-up member. Excellent movie. I give it a 9.

Fear (1996)
Parents watch out who your little girl is hanging out with !
6 March 1999
What I have to say? I have the fresh image of the film because I saw it just a couple of minutes ago.Wow! Mark Wahlberg is the most JEALOUS boyfriend I ever seen. The part where he beat his girlfriend´s friend was a prelude of Aggression, Hypocrisy, Jealousy & more Aggression!!!! Critically spoken, I think the movie was a little ficticious....We know that David was really mentally perturbed but...how could he be so evil? He was really scary. Poor little girl...what a boyfriend she had uh?

Anyways the movie was good. At least I had fun watching it. I give it a 7.

Killing Mr. Griffin (1997 TV Movie)
5/10
it's a good film so see in a boring afternoon but nothing else.
18 February 1999
The character of Mr. Griffin is the best.I thing the worst character is Kinney´s girlfriend...it's the classical no-minded blonde cheerleader. Also Mario López acts well...but I specially liked the McConnell girl..she is so fragile but sweet. Also I think Mr.Griffin´s death is a little stupid...Including the supposed "premeditative murder" of Kinney..

That´s all i have to say. Bye
