Swing Kids (1993)
Excellent insight on the youth in Germany...
17 January 2000
This movie does a great job of showing a different angle on the WW2 time period. The struggles the youth of Germany went through during that time were portrayed very well. People complain that this movie doesn't show the horror of the holocaust and the awful persecution the Jews faced, but that is not what it's trying to do! We all read or hear about what the Nazis did to the Jews (& other minorities) and think that the Germans must have been horrible people to have even gone along with this. But this shows how the propaganda they were constantly fed--as well as the activities & sense of belonging the HJ (Hitler Jungen) experienced--could slowly twist their minds to the Nazi way of thinking. One of the excellent things about this movie is how it shows how the main characters change. The changes in Peter & Thomas come very slow and natural, and only when you get to the end (and maybe re-watch it) do you realize how drastically they have changed their views. (Thomas especially)

There were some not-so-great things about the movie, like some characters or scenes which, when you think back, seem to have been included for an unknown reason. But the good points of the movie out-weigh the minor nit-picks. The swing music and dancing in the movie was awesome, and I thought all the characters were acted very well by the actors. They did a good job of showing the confusion that the young Germans must have felt, not knowing who was right. All in all, I really enjoyed this movie, and I think it makes you think as well.

Odd Man Out (1999–2000)
Pretty good, better than other TGIF shows anyway
3 December 1999
I've only seen this show 3 or 4 times, but I have to say that I like it a lot more than other shows such as "Sabrina". (the TGIF show that has been running way too long) It has a more unique plot than average, and can be quite funny. Though Keith (Trevor Fehrman) is really the funniest person on the show, not the main character Andrew.

It's too bad they're cancelling it. But, of course, the better shows on TGIF are cancelled (remember Teen Angel from a couple years ago?) while the boring and repetative ones live forever.

Others might not have, but I liked it.
21 November 1999
Maybe it's because we were 3 teenage girls in the mood for a fun, sort of silly, romantic little movie, but when my sister, a friend and I watched Never Been Kissed we all agreed that we liked it a lot.

This isn't a classic, Oscar-worthy film, and if you watch it expecting it to be, than you'll definately be disapointed. It was better than a lot of the other teen flicks out there though, such as She's All That. (but don't go in thinking it's going to be awful either, then you'll be prejudiced from the start and not much will make you like it)

Drew Barrymore was good, as she always is, and beautiful, though I disagree with anyone who says that making her a geek doesn't work. When they made her ugly, she did look like a very believable geek. We were just cringing with horror at some of those scenes from Josie's high school years. And I thought Leelee Sobieski (sp?) was also believable. Who says that the outcasts and geeks are always ugly and that the popular people are always beautiful? Sure, that is often the case, but there are many other factors that can be more important to being included in the in crowd. (clothes, attitude...)

All 3 of us also unanimously agreed that the actor who played the teacher Mr. Coulson, Micheal Vartan, was very good and we can't wait to see him again in another movie. Not only was he very good-looking, but also, we thought, a terrific actor.

Oh yes, and we all appreciated that the movie really says that high school is not everything and showed that prom is not the most important night of your life, even though it did have the prom in it. That is a very different message than many of the other teen flicks give, and much better too.

Good romantic comedy.
16 August 1999
I liked it, and there is nothing nostalgic about that, since I wasn't even born when it was made. (my mom was only 7!) I could not believe that Robert Redford was so young, and actually good looking!

This movie was funny and cute. All of the actors had good performances, and made me laugh at different times. One thing I didn't like was Jane Fonda's character, how she's so impulsive and so...I don't know. Crazy, maybe. But Jane Fonda did play her well.

Encino Man (1992)
pretty stupid.
15 August 1999
This is a pretty dumb movie, though I admit I did laugh. Mostly because Pauly Shore's character was so stupid that it was funny. I really cannot stand Brendan Fraser, and though I do like Sean Astin, he wasn't too good in this movie either. I definatly do not recommend this movie to anybody; it's a waste of time.

By the way, anyone else ever notice that Brendan Fraser is always playing characters who are out of touch with civilization? (George of The Jungle, Blast From The Past, Encino Man)

Okay.
9 August 1999
Nothing great, but not truly horrible either.

I was looking forward to seeing this, even though I had read a few bad reviews. Looking back, I would have rather seen a different movie. I guess it's an okay movie to watch once, and if you're a teen girl who likes this type of movie you'd probably like it. But I'm not planning to watch it again.

It seemed to drag on, and many of the things the characters did/said (or didn't do/say) made me want to yell at them. Also, all the characters are so stereotypical. I personally thought the prom dance scene was really dumb, and Usher didn't really do much for the movie. Plus, the pizza scene was just totally disgusting.

Having said that, there is some good parts about the movie. There were funny parts, and the ending, though pradictable, was nice. Rachel Leigh Cooke is a good actress (though you can't convince me that she's a dork. She's so pretty, and I liked the glasses!)

so, I'd rate it a 5 out of 10.

Newsies (1992)

I love Newsies!!
9 August 1999
I love this movie. Okay, okay. So the ending is predictable. So the villians are two-dimensional. So the dance scenes aren't always perfect. So what! Really, it's hard to explain why this is one of my absolute favorite movies ever. Maybe it's because the songs are so "singable" that I have them all memorized. Maybe it's because the lines are so memorable, and at times funny, that I have many of them memorized too. Maybe it's because you can't help but root for the David going up against a Goliath. Maybe it's because I love the accents. Maybe it's even because many of the actors are good-looking teenage guys. (*grin*) All I know is that I've loved this movie since before I can remember (7 or 8 years old maybe) and I still love it now. Right now I'm anxiously waiting to go to my friend's house so I can watch it again. Here's some proof of this movie's greatness as a feel-good family movie: my friend's family has 9 people in it, and every one of them loves Newsies. From the 40 yr old mother, to the 20 yr old daughter, to the 16 yr old son, to the 5 yr old son; all of them can sing along with any of the songs.

Believe me, if you like movies that are simply fun and enjoyable, you'll like this. Every time I watch it, I end up with a large, stupid grin on my face.

I have always liked this movie...
26 June 1999
I've liked it and have always seen it as just a continuation of "Green Gables". After I read the books and then watched the movies again, I realized how much they changed it, leaving things out and making things all out of sequence.

I do like this movie, and without the books, it'd be a very good story on it's own. But it would've been nice if they'd stayed truer to the story and left a few more things in.

I love it!
26 June 1999
I've watched this ever since I can remember; on PBS TV, renting the movie, watching it at friends' house who owns it, etc. I really need to buy this movie!

Megan Follows...what can I say, she's awesome! The perfect Anne. I'd never seen or heard of her anywhere else...Until I was at a friend's house once and she popped in a little-known movie called "Hockey Night" I almost fell off my chair; Megan is the main character! An only girl hockey player on an all-guys team. It's a pretty interesting movie. I should watch it again sometime.

I don't think they could make a better version of Anne if they tried today. The main characters of Marilla, Mathew, Gilbert, and of course Anne, were all played magnificently. Not to mention the setting, costumes, minor characters, etc.

White Squall (1996)
Pretty good.
14 April 1999
Not one of my favorites, but I liked it. I really didn't like Scott Wolf, for some reason I never feel very attached to the characters he plays. But most of the other boys were great. I loved Ryan Phillipe, his character was so soft and vulnerable I always wanted to give him a hug. I liked the guy who played Dean Preston too, he did well. I was surprised to see the rich boy, who I knew as the overboard activist in "the 60's" TV thing. Fairly good, though there was some parts I could have done without, (including Scott Wolf's whole role) but if you like those coming of age stories, you might like it.

I've watched this more times than I can count, and my family has owned it since before I can remember. I like this movie for that reason, also it was the first step towards movies like Apollo 13. Isn't it funny all the future stars that are in this movie? Kelly Preston, Lea Thompsan (well, she did already have Back 2 the future) Tate Donovan, Joaquin Phoenix....

Deep Impact (1998)

An okay movie.
4 April 1999
I rented this on video 2 months ago and it was okay.

The acting was generally okay, but there was too many 'main' characters. Two, or maybe even three main stories is okay, but this one had about 4. You didn't get to see most of the people enough to really care for them all. I liked the whole spaceship crew, and, unlike a lot of others it seems, I would've liked to see more of the Elijah Wood-Leelee Sobieski romance. Morgan Freeman was someone I'd like to have as a president, but the one person I could have really done without was Tea Leoni. Her whole story with her dad was boring and she never seemed to have any emotion.

The special effects were pretty good, I liked the tidal wave.

By the way, this doesn't compare with Armageddon, they're so totally different. I liked both, but Armageddon is mostly comedy and action, while Deep Impact is more drama.

This movie is okay, but it would've been a lot better if they would've left Tea Leoni out. At the end I was left wanted to see more of some characters (namely, Leo Beiderman and Sarah) and with a sense of "what, that's all?"

Little Men (1998)

Fairly good
3 April 1999
This is a pretty good movie, nothing spectacular but a nice family movie. I didn't much like Mariel Hemingway's Jo, she didn't seem to have much of the tomboyish fun spirit that Jo is famous for. I was surprised to see Chris Sarandon, because this role of his is very different from the one I'm familiar with;Prince Humperdink. I didn't like the Mr. Bhaer of this movie, he was too different from the book character. The boy who played Nat was pretty good, and he gave me the odd feeling I had seen him before, though I have no idea where. I most liked Dan though. There is something very appealing about those tough, street-wise boys, who act all hard but you know they have a heart inside. I thought he was very well played, and I'd like to see that actor (Ben Cook) again. Good movie for kids, adults and some teens might like it too.

It works!
18 March 1999
The idea of keeping Shakespearian language in a modernish setting sounds a little strange, but it works! Half-way through the movie I had forgotten that the language was 400 years old and I had no trouble at all understanding what was happening. Not only do the actors say the words in a way that lets you understand, but also the actors are so visual and expressive that you could almost understand the movie without any words at all. (though the words are wonderful and definitely worth keeping!) Leo and Claire were both great and were totally convincing as young people in love. Leo has gotten so much backlash after his popularity as Titanic, but he CAN act. (If you don't believe that after R+J, go watch Gilbert Grape, he's the only good part of the movie) I've watched this movie 3 times, with a period of about 3 months between each time, and every time my amazement is refreshed. In between, I slowly forget how good he (not to mention the movie) is! I don't think he's the hottest guy alive or anything like that, but I admit (with a little embarrassment!) that his talent and looks combined in this movie make him very attractive. Claire Danes is awesome too, her role in this made her one of my favorite female actors. The scene when Romeo and Juliet first meet is one of the best in the movie. You can almost see the electricity between them! The other actors were all good too. John Leguizamo is very convincing, the Friar and Nurse were good and Mercutio is a fun, likable character. Oh yes, some people complain about the "MTV" likeness and the music. I wouldn't know about MTV, because I never watch it, but I think the music was very good. I especially loved the boy's choir song in the wedding scene. And of course the tragic end scene....That was lovely. It's the scene I dislike the most (besides the Romeo murdering Tybalt scene, that's just scary) because of what happens, but it is also very great acting. My friends (who I watched it with) and I kept telling Romeo not to drink the poison, Juliet wasn't dead, but of course he does it every time! I love all the candles around in this scene, that's was a wonderful touch. I think that's all I'll say, except I must mention that I don't think Shakespeare would be turning over in his grave. This movie introduces a new generation to Shakespeare and makes it understandable and enjoyable, creating some new fans who might have before thought that Shakespeare was hard to understand and boring.

Awesome Shakespeare!
18 March 1999
I love this movie! Great story, wonderful cast, good photography. Kenneth Branaugh is the funniest as a witty, likable guy. His facial expressions and vocal streachs are the best! I think he is one of the best Shakespearian actors of today. Emma Thompson is great. Denzel Washington very cool, I felt so sorry for him when Beatrice refused him, though he is a little too good for her. I love his character though, how he likes to fix everybody up and make them happy. Robert Sean Lenord was a little sappy, but it was pretty fitting for who he was. He needs more roles like this and Dead Poets Society. Micheal Keaton and his little side-kick (poor guy!) stole the show! Hilarious! Hero didn't do anything for me though. She was pretty, but didn't have much to say, it seemed like she was watching the others most of the time. The best part of this movie is when Benidick and Beatrice hear about the other's love and realise they love each other. The photography is best when Beatrice is swinging and Benedick is splashing in the fountain! I'm hooked on Shakespheare now, I'm planning to watch the version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" coming out with Michelle Pfeiffer, not to mention any Shakespeare movies I see with Kenneth Branaugh in them!

Hook (1991)
I liked it.
15 March 1999
I used to watch this movie all the time when I was younger, I loved it. I haven't seen it for a year or two, but I still think it's good. Maybe it's just more of a kids movie than an adult movie, but it was cool. I watched this before I knew or cared about stars and big names, in fact, I didn't even know Dustin Hoffman was Hook until I was reading this! But Robin Williams is awesome, and definitely has a lot of kid spirit in him. I liked Julia Roberts too. Peter Pan's two kids weren't so great, but I loved the Lost Boys. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense to have them as punky rebellious types. There's tons of boys out there today who are very lost, they're usually rebellious & all.

Great Fun!
9 March 1999
I just love movies like this. It's what movies were and what they should be more often. It's funny, the swordfights are exciting, the actors are perfect and the dancing is awesome. Antonio Bandares is great whether he's an outlaw, a Zorro-in-training, a fancy Don or Zorro. Him and Anthony Hopkins are great together, they look like they're having fun. Yes, I admit Catherine Zeta-Jones is beautiful, but it's an annoying kind of beautiful. Hard to explain. Captin Love, yeek, I couldn't get over how he reminded me of Custard in a movie I saw. The dancing scene is one of the best, but some scenes are a little over-dramatic and sappy.

Wonderful!
9 March 1999
To put it simply, I loved it. No, the accents weren't always right, it didn't have awesome special effects, and it's not going to win any awards, but it's good. If you're looking for the usual Cinderella story (The Fairy Godmother, the pumpkin, the magic) you're not going to find it. What you will find is a fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. It reminds me (and I've found I'm not alone) of one of my other favorite movies, "The Princess Bride" It has the same appeal for many different kinds of people. (though not as much guy-appeal as Princess Bride, since there's not long sword-fights) But Ever After is very realistic, compared to both Princess Bride and the usual Cinderella. Like I said, there's no magic, and the relationship between Danielle and Prince Henry develops over time, it's not the silly, unrealistic love-at-first-sight story in the usual version. And Danielle isn't a little wimp everyone can push around. As a teenaged girl I loved that, and I think she's good role model for littler girls used to a very different version of Cinderella. Now for the cast. Drew Barrymore as Danielle is excellent, of course. Dougray Scott is good as a deeper, more complicated Prince than we're used to. Anjelica Huston was the perfect stepmother, showing us a human side for a small part of the movie. Patrick Godfrey was hilarious. Okay, it's not a realistic view of Da Vinci, but that shot for the "It looks like rain" scene was probably the funniest part of the movie. And I liked Gustave. Maybe I just have a strange fixation with adorable skinny guys, (Matthew Broderick as Phillipe in LadyHawke is another example) but I'd like to see him again.

I really liked the fact that while it's a movie adults can like and unmistakably a love story, there's very few swear words and no sex scenes, making it a movie kids will like too. (even if they don't pick up some of the things that are making the older viewers laugh) Bottom line: If you like fairy-tale stories that are still believable, especially if you're a fan of "The Princess Bride", you'll probably like this movie. Watch it with your kids too, especially your daughters. If you nitpick with details or only like Oscar-level dramas, you might wanna skip it.

Apollo 13 (I) (1995)
Good action movie
9 March 1999
This is the first real action movie I saw, and I loved it. I was tense the whole way through. I liked that when I looked it up later that I found it was very accurate. It's also good because it's action, without violence. I haven't seen it for a while but I remember that the actors were all good. Also, I loved it because I'm a sucker for those patrotic scenes.

Little Women (1994)
Good movie
9 March 1999
It's not one of my favorites, but it's a good movie. It's the kind of movie you should watch by yourself when you're sick, or stuck alone inside on a snowy or rainy day. If you're in a sad/love-story mood it's even better. Guys probably won't like it though. My family owns it, and we've had the old version from th 40's with Elizabeth Taylor forever. I still always get mad at Jo when she refuses Laurie, but it's even harder to take in this version because Laurie's so cute. (In the old one he's pretty ugly) The actors are great, especially Winona Ryder & Claire Danes, some of my favorite actors.

School Ties (1992)
No masterpiece, but worth watching.
9 March 1999
This isn't going to be in any top-100 movie lists, but it's worth seeing once. The issue is a good one and I especially like this kind of movie. I guess Brendan Fraser is good, but seeing George of the Jungle before seeing this didn't help my view of his character, plus I just can't stand his facial expressions. Matt Damon is supposed to be the bad guy, but I couldn't help feeling sorry for him, not just because I think he's ten times hotter than Brendan Fraser. I mean, when a guy steals the girl you consider your girlfriend and your position on the football team, and after you've been friendly enough to him, most people would take any oppurtunity to get back at him. Of course that doesn't justify what he did. There's so many good-looking young guys in this move that I can't talk about them all. Chris O'Donell, Randall Bantinkoff, Ben Affleck, etc. Rent the movie sometime.

One of my favorites
9 March 1999
This movie is one of my favorites, and I think that's a big statement from a 13 yr. old girl who usually likes movies with action, love, or ones more pointed toward my age group. John Malkovich is just great, and it sounds so odd to say this about a grown man, but his character was cute. You felt so sorry for him. The hope in the begining is such a sad contrast to the ending. This a good movie, but if you get bored easily it might get long.

One of my favorite movies of all time
2 March 1999
My family has had this movie longer than I can remember and I've seen it 100s of times. As little kids, my brother and I would pick up sticks or any kind of long cylinder-shaped object and say "Hallo! My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!" Hey, we still do! Practically everyone I know has seen this movie. You can quote any line to one of my friends and everyone with start saying things like "Inconceivable!" and "Mawwage". I have one friend who watches the movie almost every week, once she watched it three times in one day.

The best thing about this movie is that while kids can watch it, (with only 1 swear word and not too-disgusting scenes) adults love it too.

If you like movies with sword fights, romance, medieval-type settings, and some silliness, you have to see this. Swordfighting movies are a big part of my favorites, such as "The Mask of Zorro", "The Three Mustkeeters", etc.

When I was little my mom also read the book to my sister and me. I recommend it, especially because of the added background info. of the characters.

Everything was great except the music
2 March 1999
I saw this movie recently because a friend owns it, otherwise I had never heard of it. But I'm glad I did see it! It had a good plot, though the "night without day, day without night" line was no riddle to everyone who I saw the movie with. The landscape was beautiful and I loved the filming for when Isabeau turned into a hawke and the wolf turned back into Etienne. But the best part was Matthew Broderick as Phillipe "The Mouse"! His little talks to God were cute and his character was just really sweet. The only complaint I had was the 80's pop music. It clashed so much with landscape and the story. What it needs is more classical-type music, or at least a less-techno sound. Maybe James Horner could redo the music.

The Goonies (1985)
Good movie for kids
2 March 1999
I wasn't even born when it was made, so no one can say I like it for nostalgic reasons! Adults with no sentimental attachments probably wouldn't like it too much, but it's a good kids movie, and, I guess you'd like it if you were a kid growing up during that time. I did like seeing those clothes, not to mention the working out and cheerleading, very 80's. One thing they should do is put back in the cut scenes (the Stef & Mouth scene most especially) and re-release it! How about a 15 year anniversary or something?
