Beloved (1998)
infanticide is never acceptable, don't waste your time
I was excited to see Beloved. I love Toni Morrison and had not had the time to read this one yet and figured that the move would give me the catalyst to read the book.
All I can say is that I hated this movie. You don't kill your children, if anything, you kill what is after your children. I can not abide the example this film sets. I can not stomach this type of horror.
All I can say is please do not waste your time.
Actually, they should just make a movie about baby suggs, that part was great.
What Dreams May Come (1998)
sometimes when you lose, you win
Rented this movie a few days back and I can't get it out of my head. There are things that I disagree with, most obviously that God is never mentioned in the whole film. However, I can get past that and realize that it is a movie and not a sermon.
Besides the theological dilemmas, I loved this movie. I loved Robin Williams, I loved Scoccia. I loved the idea of a love so strong that can transcend the grips of hell. I loved the idea that we each create our own heaven and hell and choose to dwell in either.
Very few movies haunt me. This one will remain with me indefinitely and I welcome the memory.
Soldier (1998)
more than meets the eye
Usually, I am not a fan of the typical action film. However, to the dismay of many, this is not the typical action film. This film isn't so much about the actions of war and special effects as it is really about the actions of the society that engineered these soldiers. When watching this film, I was reminded of a Dylan song "Masters of War". This about brainwashing and using human life as a toy. It also reminds me of the books, 1984 and Brave New World. Kurt Russell's performance was riveting and nothing less than extraordinary. For those that want to be merely entertained by big action, rent something like Lethal Weapon or some crappy action film. However, if you would like to use your mind and and broaden the scope of your human experience, give this one a try. And after you view the film, look around....is our world so different?
Avalon (1990)
we're getting farther and farther away from Avalon
Avalon is one of those rare precious jewels that become more beautiful each time you view it. My family watches Avalon every Thanksgiving, and usually a few other times during the year as well. Every time we watch it, we discover new insights. I encourage all to take the time to experience this piece of priceless art.
