Being John Malkovich (1999)
Amusing, but unfocused and overdrawn.
WARNING: SPOILER COMMENTS THROUGHOUT. DON'T READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE
Some aspects of this movie I found very amusing, such as the basic premise (a portal into someone else's life), and especially the 7 1/2 floor (very cute). Much of the latter half of the movie seemed to lose focus, and spread itself very thinly over the characters. I was uncomfortable with the whole girl-girl relationship (come on, Hollywood, do we need more twisted stuff like this in movies? I think not).
One of the major problems I have with this movie is that none of the characters are likeable (save for John M. himself, who appears only briefly as himself). I didn't care for the John Cusak (sp?) character, nor either of the women.
Disco Beaver from Outer Space (1979)
National Lampoon at its best!
A hilarious movie, actually a collection of shorts that transpire as the people in the movie watching the movie change channels. Who can forget the image of the Disco Beaver getting a little too friendly with the lady in the fur coat? Or Helping Horny Hands? Or Rocky Rococco?
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Wow! What a great movie! A must see!
I don't know that a movie ever surprised me like this one did. Completely unexpected ending. Gripping, tense. Perhaps a bit slow getting started, but extremely well-acted, superbly written and filmed. A quality motion picture. If more films were like this one I would go to the movie theater more often.
Blast from the Past (1999)
Cute. Good message that could have been carried further.
A cute film that seems to be saying "People were nicer in the 1950's than they are today." Brendan Frasier plays a character that is a little bit George of the Jungle, a little bit Forrest Gump, and little bit Chance the Gardener.
Point of No Return (1993)
Terrible. Badly written, completely miscast.
What a joke. Bridget Fonda plays a demure, shy, fragile young woman one minute and then blows them away with a bullet to the forehead the next! She prances around carrying a prop gun that would weigh several pounds in real life but she brandishes like the plastic replica it is. They couldn't even get that right.
I found nothing about this movie to like.
Groundhog Day (1993)
Its' A Wonderful Day.
A wonderful film. We have a family tradition of watching this movie once a year -- on Groundhog's Day, of course. A good, clean, funny film (sometimes eerie) with a good message. Good family film. Sweet.
Nothing But Trouble (1991)
I loved this movie, but it's not for everyone...
Apparently this movie is one you either love or hate. My wife hates it, I love it. A genuinely frightening comedy. Multiple roles by two of the actors, including Dan Ackroyd as the Shire Reeve and one of the mutant twins, John Candy as the mute daughter and the "good cop." Funny film with lots of atmosphere. Demi Moore is gorgeous in it, BTW.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988)
THE most creative, clever show ever.
There has never and very likely will never again be a show like MST3K on television. The network execs apparently hate it because it lampoons the very drivel they produce. Take a look at 99% of what is on the SCI FI CHANNEL and it is just as bad as the movies Mike and the Bots tear apart on their show.
Very sad that it has been cancelled. Keep circulating the tapes, and hope that the talent from Best Brains, Inc. that entertained us so long will come up with something else for us to chuckle at.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie (1996)
I laughed, I cried, I peed...
If you are a fan of the TV show, you won't be disappointed with MST3K: The Movie. The sets are a bit different, allowing the camera angles you won't see on TV. Mike and the 'Bots are in top form, and this is some of Trace B.'s last work as Dr. Forrester.
I predict that, twenty years from now, this TV show and this movie will have a cult following.
Kelly's Heroes (1970)
A different kind of war movie...
Kelly's Heroes is a difficult movie to describe -- somewhat a cross between a good war movie and a black comedy. The chemistry between Savalas, Eastwood, Rickles, and Sutherland really makes this movie. The combat scenes are some of filmdom's best...close to the Kubrick-directed scenes in Dr. Strangelove.
