Shepherd (1998)
Quite possibly the worst "flick" ever made.
I say "flick" because this doesn't deserve the appellation "movie", and certainly not "film". I regret paying for the rental, and although I've never walked out on a movie before, this would have been it, had I seen it in a theatre. A society living underground in the future (oooh, THAT'S original), lots of burning barrel drums, unexplained ambient light shining through windows, an ungrateful woman and her shock-muted son...the list goes on and on. C. Thomas Howell affects the husky voice of the stereotypical loner; you know like Eastwood's been done to death. He needs special sunglasses to remember his wife and child, yet in the flashbacks, he's the same age! Talk about a poor memory! I stared incredulously when the little boy Abe randomly pushes a code into a door and it opens! No tension, pithy religious (what religion?) under/overtones...saddest of all: I expected better from Roddy Piper;
Quite possibly the worst movie experience in my life.
The Whole Nine Yards (2000)
very quirky...and funny
Just returned from seeing this tonight. Overall good performances from all...except: Arquette's ludicrous Quebec accent (That was painful!). Slow moving to begin with, I was quickly converted to really liking this flick. Worth a rental, not a purchase.
Lola rennt (1998)
It will leave you breathless!
Wonderful camera work, especially during the running scenes. I don't speak very much Deutsche, but that made it more interesting. The actors, especially the gorgeous Franka Potente (Lola), transcend language "barriers" with their talent. I won't give away any surprises, but the plot ascends wonderfully from worst end result, to bad end result, to a lovely conclusion. Sehr gut! I hope I spelled that right. My fervent wish, is that Hollywood does NOT ruin this with a version of their own. Too many european films are dumbed down and fed through a sausage grinder. This gem deserves to succeed on it's own merits. See it. Buy it. Tomorrow, I'll purchase the soundtrack.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
Pure Dead Brilliant!
I could gush forever about this film...and I'd like to; but others have done that for me. A must own film worth constant re-viewing. The fact that it has a convoluted plot line is all the fun...I've already seen enough Rambo's and Look who's talking's! A bit of advice to our American friends finding the accents tricky: rewind the video and be patient. East End slang is a rhyming game. If it sounds like what the speaker's pointing at...it's bloody it! A basic example is "take a butchers". This means "take a look". How? "Butcher's hook" rhymes with "look", see? Work it out, and expand your vocab. It's been emotional.
The Shadow (1994)
Everything that the Batman movies should have been!
Dark with whimsy. The humour is never over the top, the gadgets are "believable", and Penelope Ann Miller looks great in that green dress. Also, in regards to Miss Miller's Margo Lane: she never screams, never twists her ankle, and provides for much of the movies levity. Convincing atmosphere that beats Gotham's "retro" all hollow. I AM a Batman fan...at least the comic books; but the Shadow's motivation is somehow nobler: redemption rather than revenge. A visual feast and great action.
Let the Blood Run Free (1990)
If you like "Bottom", you'll love this!
A brilliant example of meta-fiction, with many a wink to the camera...and loads of gore (hilariously fake). This spoof of hospital soaps was a joy to catch VERY late at night on TV. The production itself looks like a high school film class put it together...but that's only the start of the fun!
