Teacher's Pet (1958)
delightful movie
This movie is absolutely delightful to watch. The friction of Gable in Pursuit of Day and the frustration of continuous failure to accomplish his mission is fun. One feels his emotions as the show progresses and they are pure human.
Gettysburg (1993)
Berringer and Elliott fascinating to me
Perhaps because James Longstreet is one of my favorite Confederate generals, I was particularly pleased with the way Tom Berringer played Longstreet. Only now is he being redeemed historically for the very great corps commander that he was---one of the best in American History.
I also was enamored with Sam Elliott's part as John Buford. I like to think that Buford was every bit as fascinating in real life as Elliott played him in this picture. Sam Elliott and Fess Parker both have the most distinctive and enchanting voices and I never cease to enjoy just hearing them talk in any movie they are in.
Rough Riders (1997)
surprise breaking of horse by polo player was wonderful
The riding of a heretofore unridable horse by the New York polo player to the suprise and chagrin of the cowboys in the Rough Riders was one of the most delightful episodes I have ever seen on screen. When the rider rode over and picked up his hat on the ground from his saddle on the move, one of the cowboys asked another New Yorker "Who is that guy"? The New Yorker's reply "He is the best polo player in the world" was the kind of overwhelming punch line that is the rarest of the rare in the movies. I loved it.
