Caesar (2002)
okay but strangely addictive
2 July 2003
This whole movie was miscast . It made me think, for example "that's Chris Noth playing Pompey" instead of the actors really disappearing into their roles. The strangest casting move was Christopher Walken. He doesn't even LOOK Roman! At least Chris Noth has a classic-looking face (for lack of better words). They tried too hard to make Caesar likable. I caught myself sympathizing with him during the first act, and even in parts of the second. Where is Octavian/Augustus during the movie? And who was Cato's son? I kept mistaking him for the guy who played Brutus. Still, I wanted to keep watching, I'm not sure why. overall.......6.5/10

p.s.: I was watching Clueless on TV just now and I thought the man playing Elton looked familiar. I quickly discovered that he was none other than Jeremy Sisto! I would have recognized him immediately except he had a full head of hair in that movie ;-)

ehhhhhhhhh............:-/
5 March 2003
Warning: Spoilers
ok there are a few spoilers in here so if you have not seen the movie do not read this!!!

I read about halfway through the book. Even with that, the movie was NOTHING like the book. First of all, Morgause is 13 in the beginning of the book, and in the movie she's like, what, 35/40? Same with Igriane. she was supposed to be 19. If Igriane had been that old in the book she would have been dead within the 1st 20 pages. Second, something was wrong with having Angelica Huston play Viviane, I cant put my finger on it. I think Huston was just too hammy. However, Julianna Margulies as Morgaine was REALLY good. not quite enough to redeem the movie though.

the special effects were really bad. Also, was there a threesome in the book? I've been trying to find it. someone tell me!

To the previous reviewer, I am one of those women who read the book when I was 13 (actually I was 12). However, as much has I wanted to believe it was real history, I knew that it probably was not. I've never been a naive person .I am 14 now and if i reread the book, I would be more skeptic towards its story. Not that much older, but whatever :-)

Finally, the ending SUCKED, for lack of a better word. I seriously doubt that Morgaine would've accepted Christianity as another "Goddess" religion, especially since that was one of the reasons Gwenhyfar hated her so much (the feeling, obviously, was mutual:-). I personally think that Christianity is all about worshiping MALE figures & symbols, but that's just my opinion.

Sorry, I've been rambling on AGAIN. Anyway, the movie was just.......ehhh, whatever.

Best in Show (2000)
hilarious!!!!!!!!!!
27 June 2001
This was a great movie! My favorite character was Harlan Pepper. The pine nuts thing was hilarious. My family rented it, and my mom & sister almost died laughing listening to him name nuts and do his ventriloquism thing. We actually rented it twice and my sister drove me nuts because she kept fast-forwarding through the yuppie couple's scenes (i liked them, but she didnt). My other favorite characters were the gay couple. The dog calendar thing was really funny! Another great character was the dog show announcer. The good thing about this movie was that the characters seemed real. Harlan pepper's southern accent seemed very authentic, and I know that there are many white trash couples (e.g. Gerry & cookie) and neurotic yuppie couples and people who treat their dogs like theyre kids in general. I strongly recommend seeing this movie!!!

Chocolat (1988)
a thoughtful and interesting movie
2 March 2001
By way of a woman's remembrance we are asked to reflect upon themes - coming of age, colonialism, race, religion, the power of the elements - that are often presented in a heavy-handed and awkward manner.

This film is very understated and thoughtful. There is no one single message or moral here; these are complex themes and so there is often ambiguity.

I liked this film very much. I know this will seem trite, but, not many American Directors make small films like this - ones that deal with complex themes in a gentle and intelligent manner.

I read the quotes for this movie an there were tons of references to teen sex and use of the "s" word more than once. The guy who said he took his 8 and 10 year old kids to see this movie (see the other comments) is a idiot this movie is not for kids. Rent it if you have at least one kid age 14-17 or you are curious. I f you have younger kids, put them to bed and then watch it by yourself or with your 14-17 year old.

I also love the one when homer says, ata restaurant, "ooh. You're such a girly, tea party, underpantsy steakhouse!" Me and my sister laughed for 5 minutes straight a the fact that he said "underpantsy"! I am like lisa except I have friends. My favorite Character is Bart

nice, but short
1 June 1999
I liked this movie, but it was too short. I know kids have short attention spans, but a half an hour was too short. I was very disappointed. I thought it would be longer.

I HATE THIS MOVIE!
31 May 1999
This movie is so darn racist I can't believe it's a classic! They didn't even show real black people in it! They just put dark makeup on white people's faces. I can't believe AFI put this in their top 100. Sure, it's really old, but that shouldn't make it a classic. If it were up to me, I'd burn that movie! If little kids see it and they aren't taught about racism, they could think that it's right to hurt someone because they aren't white. I'm very disappointed in AFI.
