South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
Absolutely hilarious satire
On the surface, it's an absolutely hilarious comedy.
Dig slightly deeper, and it's an absolutely hilarious satire on American society.
Matt Stone and Trey Parker have revived the infamous Comedy Central series "South Park" (which had been mostly lackluster since the pilot and first episode) and delivered a pure gem of a movie.
Barely escaping an NC-17 rating (that it probably would have received regardless had Paramount not been backing the movie), "South Park" manages to be a satire of nearly every ill facing American culture: censorship, overbearing parents, blaming others for our mistakes...you name it, it's in there.
Yes, it's vulgar. Yes, it's disgusting at times. But it's also an incredibly relevant look at our society, and it carries several messages that we should all take to heart. The fact that Stone and Parker can do this WITHOUT stating it explicitly (a trait sorely lacking in most American-made movies) just makes it all that more incredible--and damn funny.
By the Sword (1991)
Fun? Sorta. Reality? Nope.
I wouldn't say this is a *bad* movie. Unfortunately for me, I get the feeling that the more you know about fencing, the worse it gets simply due to the fact that it becomes totally unrealistic. I've been fencing since i was 14 years old, and this movie portrays it very poorly. F. Murray Abraham is good (and appears to have some fencing background), but most of the other actors--especially the students--just seem to be lost.
