Wrong Turn (I) (2003)
Could have been a gem
20 June 2004
This could have been a decent horror film for rental or matinee, but Emmanuelle Chiquiri's terrible acting RUINS this movie. Whoever cast her in this part is demented. Her character seems to exist to horribly fake cry, then her acting gets WORSE. It is so bad it genuinely ruins the movie and sucks the life out of good performances by Eliza Dushku, Jeremy Sisto and that other guy (Chris Flynn character) who all put in really good ones. Just when you get lost in the movie and the above par performances her annoying, squeaky/scratchy voice chips with a completely wooden and/or overwrought reading. Whoever allowed this should be blacklisted for eternity. The creepy Hillbillies are actually pretty scary (scarier when silent than when doing their lame hoots). Without Emmanuelle Chiquiri I would probably rate this movie a four out of five low budget horror film stars, with her it wates an almost unbearable two (just because you can still tell how good it could have been for what it is)

Bitter garbage with a few sweet spots
22 December 2003
The problem with this movie is the complete lack of main characters to care for on any level. They are mostly cruel, angry people who do not deserve a thing. Almost worthless outside the rather charming romance that develops between the characters played by Judge Reinhold and Patrika Darbo. Tess Harper is also a very sympathetic and likable character as a daughter always living in the shadow of her much loved sister and willing to sacrifice too much of her own life for some validation.

Gothika (2003)
bleh
19 November 2003
the movie had serious potential: Creepy atmosphere, great acting, good idea, great set.. but it ends up a rather embarrassing mess. Penelope Cruz is particularly embarrassing. The character is lame, her acting is lame, and her lines made me cringe and seemed to exist to be put in the trailer. Halle Berry (whom I generally dislike) is quite good in this movie. She hits the right notes of fear, vulnerability, and determination.

There are some definite spine tingling moments but it ends up disappointing and flat. Another comment rightfully compared it to the recent version of "House on Haunted Hill".. they are both potentially super creepy films that end up all style, no substance, and mildly discommodious to be caught watching.

Bus 174 (2002)
Suffocatingly sad wake-up call
2 November 2003
I just saw this movie, and I cannot imagine a more terrifying, sad, and heartbreaking piece of film existing. this movie is simply devastating. I was sobbing within the first 20 minutes. A young man of 19(who looks about 50)hi-jacks a bus and we see the results of an agonizing life play out before our eyes. It is hard to watch, and hard not to deeply care for Sandro. I cannot put into words how heartbreaking and important this movie is. Sandro's life is irrevocably doomed, and we discover there are thousands almost exactly like him, roaming the streets of Rio, desperate and hungry for any kind of social acknowledgement. It should be required viewing for the human race.

Vanishing America (1986 Video)

Rich hall is genius
2 September 2000
I am devastated to see that "Rich Hall's Onion World" is not included in the IMDB, but Vanishing America is just another title for the same brand of scathingly hilarious humor. Rich Hall was the Tom Green of the mid-late 80s, but with a smaller following and a much smarter sense of humor. Comedy Central should air this and "Onion World" and show how cutting edge their programming used to be. Other than dated political references, I do not think Rich Hall is timely at all. People might be shocked it is 15-9 years old. A must see for anyone who enjoys frantic, smart, improvisational humor involving a brilliant frantic comedian meeting the public.

Immensely enjoyable brain vacation!
30 October 1999
"Drive me Crazy" is an absolutely fun movie romp! I expected to leave this one with the same feeling of absolute annoyance I had when I left "10 things..." and "She's All that". Nicole and Chase are more likable and more realistic than the teenagers in either of those films. While the premise has been used to pieces the movie feels fresh. The popular Nicole is not a snob that looks down on everyone else in the school, and Chase is not the school dork. They just happen to move in different circles. Especially enjoyable is the fact that you actually see a relationship developing based on a lot of chemistry and some open minds. Sure we know they will get together at the end, but it is fun to watch them get to the point. The pratfalls they encounter are not lame comic relief or based on overblown emotions. When things happen, we understand why they happen and how. They had a "business" deal and neither Nicole nor Chase are willing to admit their feelings have developed any further. Sure there are Back Street Boys and Brittany Spears songs on the soundtrack, but the movie is an enjoyable, and relatively intelligent genre entry.

Superstar (1999)
I do not know if being in the movie, or being at the movie would be more humiliating.
8 October 1999
This is one of those movies that is so bad you feel the need to tell everyone who sees you "I got in for free". Molly Shannon as Mary Catherine Gallagher is mean spirited, obnoxious, and baffling. She is a character based on one joke, that she smells her BO coated fingers when she is upset, and the joke makes no sense. Mary Catherine's behavior throughout the movie is completely mystifying, I cannot imagine a single human behaving in such a manner. It is a riddle how such behavior was even written it is so alien. In the movie Mary Catherine dreams of being famous, and being kissed by the coolest guy in school (Will Farrell, humiliating himself AGAIN, you have to wonder if he is taking jobs to get some kind of operation he desperately needs). She thinks she can kill two birds with one stone if she can win the school talent show that is obnoxiously related to nuns and VD. I can actually see this movie as a touching teen drama-comedy if they cast the movie with plausible teenagers and dropped the complete lunatic behavior of Mary Catherine (that was not even funny the FIRST time she showed us her white pantied crotch as she fell to the ground). The director tries desperately to keep the movie alive by using bright colors, and rapid pacing, but NOTHING could save this movie.

Molly Shannon is incapable of carrying a film, with her one note, cruel, performance. The only performance worth noting is Mark McKinney as the head priest, who has what it takes to become a respected character actor.

Horror that is actually horrifying
13 September 1999
This entire movie evokes the feeling of a nightmare right down to that nagging feeling in your stomach that something is terribly wrong.

John Trent (Sam Niel) is sent to find an author, Sutter Cane, who's publishers are afraid has made off on his substantial book advance. Trent gets pulled into something much deeper when he discovers people privy to advance copies have turned into homicidal maniacs with very strange eyeballs. He finds (in a fun scene) the town where all of Cane's books took place complete with giant, eerie demon cathedral, possessed elderly, murderous children, and roads that take you right back to where you came from no matter how far and fast you drive. Trent realizes the release of Cane's latest novel will free an unstoppable evil onto the world, and must be halted by all means necessary. The way the movie jumps around is not only scary and VERY dreamlike, but it makes perfect sense as the movie progresses. The end is a corker.

If there was any justice this movie would have made all the money ID4 made and more. This movie sticks with you for days. Full of haunting imagery, suspense, great effects, and big ole globs of humor. Thumbs up!

Grave Secrets (1989)
Some genuine scares
16 July 1999
This is an unknown gem of a movie that has some real chills. Like much of it's genre it shows too much at the end and falls apart while fumbling for an (unsatisfying) explanation of the events. Overall, definitely recommended over the "Scream" rip-offs or "Exorcist" rip-offs of the late 70s and early 80s. If it were released today it would probably be a modest box office success.

Look for some conceptually innovative supernatural activity!
