Battlefield Earth (2000)
Oh the humanity!
The original book was based on a 1940's style that was woefully out of date even then. I feel a grave tactical mistake was done trying to preserve the book plot. There's enough plot holes to start with in the book, abridging the book with the excuse they had for the script did nobody a favor. I realize they had crap to work with, I just don't see why it had to be worsened with all sorts of odd gimmicks. The story was a disaster to start with, I guess there was an impetus to try to improve the obvious failings. Avoid this movie. Even if you love the books. It will give nothing but a TV miniseries view to it. I suspect the networks could have done a better job with a lot less money. I like Travolta, and Pepper does a great job, it's just that there's an abundance of wretchedness to point to here. Avoid unless you like wrecks.
Scalps (1983)
Jesus, what a piece of junk.
This one is putrid. No redeeming points at all. A friend rented this and we punched him out for daring to fall asleep during it because we still had to watch it. He deserved it and worse. What could he have been thinking in renting this travesty? Avoid at all costs, even drugging the audience is futile.
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)
After seeing it at age 13.
It is simply the funniest movies I have ever seen. You may disagree but you actually have to understand it the first time through. Watching it subsequently, if you curl up in fits of laughter, you're a sick person like me. I realize I'm supposed to take it seriously, but I just can't. That said, it is a brilliant piece of work and not to be missed. Highly recommended and since I've actually bought this movie it's not just talk, I have put my money where my mouth is. It is a vicious and compelling script and it's hard to imagine who could have done it better.
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
Another one that is funny.
This is a movie I see as a spoof. It's got quite a few moments of comedy. When I first saw it, I couldn't believe the absence of dialogue in the first five minutes. I've seen it at least 10 times and I still find it amusing.
Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966)
A movie that I enjoy when under the influence
Geez. It doesn't get worse than this. It just can't. I'm torn between giving this thing an Academy Award for the category 'Worst Movie Endured by the Poor B******s Who had to View This Repeatedly' and Putting the Director on the War Crimes List. The only saving point of this is the MST3K treatment of the "movie". I've always thought that "Scalps" was the worst movie ever. We even punched out the person who rented it because he kept falling asleep while it was shown, but this transcends even that. That said, I taped it a few years ago and played it to death because it was so bad. I then had the chance to buy the "original" made by Best Brains. It may be an indication of how badly I have lost it, but if you like really bad movies to heckle, this is your Mount Everest. Embrace it, love it and as soon as I get a kickback scheme going to a sanitarium, I'll make some recommendations should you decide to follow this advice. Insert Deity Here help you. Cujo.
