Zombie! vs. Mardi Gras (1999)
if i could have scratched my eyes out i would have . . .
muck, muck, and more muck. when looking at this movie i realized that talent is only a 6 letter word. the writing was deplorable and beyond far fetched. fantasy is fantasy, but when the lines get crossed and blurred, the message gets lost. funny small happenings and breasts galore couldn't save the damnation.
Pecker (1998)
Did you see what I shot?
John Waters at his best. He is on top of his game. This movie was soooooo funny. The best things about this movie had to the supporting cast. Pecker's sisters, best friend, and grandmother steal the show. This movie resonates with past Waters humor and keeps you entertained the whole time. It's just a whole lot of fun. His pictures aren't all that bad either. Also check out the DVD for an extra short on the photographer who shot Pecker's pictures.
Two Girls and a Guy (1997)
Funny box but that's all
This movie had so much potential. Two girls figure out they are dating the same guy. What revenge could be dealt. But it doesn't. To top it off the movie just ends and there is no hint of closure. The comedy is trite at best and the drama reminds me of a bad after school special. Robert Downey tries his luck with Shakespeare and even fails at that. Such high hopes with flat rewards.
Bian Lian (1995)
An art that can't die.
This movie was excellent. A sad truth to how culture tends to clash with the sexes. This is just one big warm fuzzy type of movie. You have the master who is steeped in tradition and kind hearted in his own way, Doggie despite being a girl thing to win his affections and you top it off with one cute monkey with a thousand facial expressions. This equals on big happy movie in the end. This movie does a good job at showing how steeped in tradition one can be, so steeped that they are willing to die without sharing their secrets. You see sides to a culture never seen before which helps enhance the drama that unfolds near the end of the picture. The cinema-photography is excellent, in particular the opening parade sequence with all the sparkers. Bound to be in Oscar contention for best foreign film.
Le violon rouge (1998)
An unforgettable journey of passion
Walking out of this movie all I could say is "wow". Words can't even begin to describe how excellent this movie is. I normally can't get into subtitled movies unless I'm at home so I can rewind the VCR. This movie on the other hand had me so enthralled that I was actually able to keep up. The main reason for this was an amazing story structure that goes through the ages flip flopping from the past to the present. Each scene in time is foretold and acted out completing a huge and complex jigsaw puzzle. The acting is superb and the settings are marvelous. This movie just leaves you in an awe.
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
Never trust anything that bleeds for five days and doesn't die.
The most profound thing I heard when I walked out of the theatre was "I liked the movie except for the singing parts." Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny boldly go where few cartoons dare to go, straight for the jugular. Trey and Matt have achieved their goal complete and total sell out, and along the way pi**ing off who ever they want. The movie at times mocks society at large, popular culture, and even itself. This is the genius of the whole thing. It's everything the TV series couldn't get away with and more. Adding to its greatness were several guest appearances, an awesome soundtrack, and an effort to show at least almost every character that has been in the series. One great accomplishment for the little phenomenon gone totally mass culture.
Wild Wild West (1999)
This ain't your average rodeo.
Can the west ever be tamed? Well that's the goal of James T. West (Will Smith) and inventor Artemus Gordan (Kevin Kline). Spawned from a far greater series this West has its moments. The action sequences are spectacular and only paralleled by great special effects. Kenneth Branaugh pays the psycho inventor Dr. Arliss Loveless (oh the irony of names, but it adds to the campiness of the whole thing). For once the trailers didn't give away a crucial plot/character element, i.e. Loveless wheelchair. The west is full of out right humor but is much more appreciated for its snide and subtle humor (sheep and French for instance). The best thing about this movie is the fact that it branches out on its own and creates a whole new West and leaves the TV series safe in history. The only parallels come in through genre and a few name sakes. If you were disappointed with Star Wars this movie will give a start to making it up to you.
