The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)
Plot Holes
Couple of plot holes:
1) What happened to the ten thousand dollars? If Big Dave killed the salesman, he would have his money back. So why would he not be able to complete his addition?
2) On the same issue, what would he want to broadcast his knowledge of the salesman to Billy Bob? You would think, having killed someone, he would try to keep it quiet. Bodies always turn up.
3) Dry Cleaning wasn't a new business after World War II, there were plenty of dry cleaners.
4) What about Billy Bob's fingerprints? Nobody checked the fingerprints on the murder weapon, which he left at the scene of the crime?
5) Billy Bob is only guilty of one crime, and that is blackmail, which is not a hanging offense. In film noir, people deserve their fate, and he should not die for it.
6) Billy Bob was acting in self defense when he killed Big Dave. This was never brought up. Big Dave was strangling him.
7) Billy Bob obviously did not kill the salesman. If he had, he would not have left the contract in the car with him, with his name on it.
8) There is nothing illegal about investing in dry cleaning. Why would the police assume that Billy Bob would invest in his venture, and then kill the salesman, before he could get the dry cleaning business going? And like I said, leave the contract in the car?
By the way, I don't really understand the spoiler concept, but this contains spoilers, so I warned you. I never read these until I've finished watching the movie. Why would anyone?
Blindness (2008)
Day of the Triffids
This is a blatant rip off of Day of the Triffids, but without a good plot, or story lines, or action, or ...
It is just amazing to me that nobody else has seen the obvious parallel, since in Day of the Triffids, the only thing that really makes the Triffids dangerous, is being blind. If you have sight in that film, you simply kill the Triffids, they are only good at sneaking up on blind people, which is most of the population.
Since she can see, it seems impossible to me that she would put up with the other floor raping all of the women. This would have made more sense if the guy with the gun could see. What sighted woman allows herself to be raped by a blind guy? Just too stupid. And shown to be stupid, when she finally does easily kill him. And still she doesn't take the gun!
Fanboys (2009)
Just Got Back from Comic Con
I just got back from Comic-Con, where they show a lot of fan made movies, all of which are made for ten dollars, and all of which are better than this.
They should not have used the American Pie format for this kind of film, because this isn't this kind of film. You never for a minute think that these are real nerds. You should watch Revenge of the Nerds, or probably better, the Big Bang Theory, is you want to see nerds really well done.
I also agree about the super hot girl, who actually works in the comic book store. Even if this were real, you wouldn't put it in a movie, because it isn't believable in the movie.
If you went to comic con, you would know, that the super hot girls, are paid to be at comic con. The actually geek girls, are geek girls for a reason. Super hot girls are off being super hot.
George Lopez (2002)
Carmen
I really like this show. That is why I was disappointed to learn recently that George Lopez is a racist, and that he fired Masiela Lusha off the show, simply because he discovered that she wasn't a Latino emigrant, but was an emigrant from Albania. I learned this from people on the show. She was really one of the better parts of the show, and thus, to learn that even among those who you would think would be sensitive to racism, that they can also hate someone, just because of the country where they were born, is really disappointing. Frontier Rangers (1959)
Another Bad Remake
When will Hollywood ever learn not to remake a great movie? The answer is, probably never.
The 1940 version of this movie, with Spencer Tracy, is excellent. Why do a cheap knockoff?
It looks like they might have used the same costumes, probably from Western Costume, because they appear to be identical.
You get to see Angie Dickinson with dark hair, which might be her natural hair color. She is really young and beautiful here, something you might not known if you first saw her in "Police Woman."
In any event, it just makes me sad, that Hollywood has the money to make movies, and instead of tackling new scripts, they just keep rehashing the old.
The Darling Buds of May (1991)
Liked the Movie Better
I liked the movie with Debbie Reynolds and Tony Randall much better, but it's a nice little TV series in any event.
The TV series seems to have lost some of nice touches of the film.
Apparently, comments have to be at least 10 lines, so I will give some examples:
The trading aspects of the Larkin's life is very important in the movie, but the TV series opens up with him paying cash. They had abandoned the very reason why Larkin doesn't pay taxes, right up front.
The daughter Mariette is already pregnant in the TV series, by someone else! Hardly family fare!
Larkin seems like more a con man, I liked him more as a big hearted innocent.
Manna from Heaven (2002)
Screenplay could have used some work
A screenplay is the most important part of a movie. This one had a lot of difficulties, beginning with the exciting incident. The fact that Sister Theresa wanted them to give the money back, suddenly, after years of indifference, after she was the one who had blessed them stealing it, is not the best way to motivate this film. Any screenwriting teacher would have told them it had to be an outside agent, or at least a new development.
In addition, none of the characters are sympathetic, and they become even less so during the film. They set up two contests for the city of Buffalo, and the family wins both. No suprise. In the raffle, they take all of the tickets but their sisters out of the barrel, ensuring she wins. In the waltz contest, they are the waltz instructor, their students aren't really going to be able to win against them.
You also can't believe for a minute that Shirley Jones, of Partridge Family fame, and a member of this family, is going to steal all of the lottery money and the car at the last minute.
Searching the internet for the screenwriter, she comes up as a Nichols winner for "The Imperial Waltz." This might be the same screenplay.
