Troll 2 (1990)
The Original Boogeyman Is Back? My, How He's Changed!
If you're gonna make a movie called Troll II, what should it be about? Trolls, right? Well, this movie strayed from the ordinary (the movie features goblins, instead), but I applaud that; it's not every year a movie as unique as this comes out. Troll II contains some unforgettable scenes: the popular dinner table set piece, Grandpa Seth's lesson in fire-starting, the priests' sermon on meat, etc.
Also, entertaining characters such as the child hero Joshua, his deceased-but-back-to-save-the-day Grandpa Seth, Creedence the local witch, the sexy Holly, the air-head Elliot and his boys, the generous Sheriff Gene Freak, Grandpa Seth's friend who used to live in Hell (whom, by the way, taught him a very useful trick), and of course the goblins themselves.
The films' use of foreshadowing is, also, very effective (eg, On the way to Nilbog Diane exclaims, with sandwich in hand, "Speaking of hungry, WANT SOME ,JOSHUA?". Also, look for the big bowl of apples in the middle of the table during the dinner scene).
The above may sound silly, but it's different and in every respect of the word: FUN! While being a clever spoof, the film also provides chills of it's own; younger viewers beware.
So, if you're watching Troll II and find yourself saying "I can't...I can't move(!), why?", it's probably because you're having a good time.
Fire Down Below (1997)
Deliverance + Billy Jack = Fire Down Below
I was never a fan of Steven Seagal until I saw this movie. I rented Fire Down Below because I saw a preview for it on another video and it looked hilariously awful; something that I could have a good laugh at. Well, I wasn't completely right; I did get the unintentional howlers like I expected, but I also got likable characters and performances, and a rated 'R' movie without so MUCH profanity. Recommended for fans of fast action, sweet romance and laughs (both purposefully and not); Enjoy.
The Toxic Avenger (1984)
This movie should be taken out back and shot!
Low budget, rock bottom, raunchy, tasteless, inept(purposefully) "classic" about a nerd transformed into a mutant who fights crime...the dirty way! If you think it's funny when a group of teenagers run over a 12 year-old boy for "points" and then take pictures of his crushed head for kicks, then this may be your movie. If it's cheap blood and gore effects you're looking for, enjoy; If it's also humor you're after...look elsewhere (cult classics: Evil Dead trilogy and A Clockwork Orange...these movies are MUCH more tasteful).
What Lies Beneath (2000)
Very Spooky!
I'm the kind of person who, usually, prefers the old classics; I've never been a big fan of 90's movies. The Sixth Sense was the best movie I'd seen in a theater in a while, until yesterday; My friend and I went to see What Lies Beneath and had a great time! We laughed, made jokes and jumped right out of our seats. If you're looking for a fun time, take one of your friends and go see "what lies beneath".
P.S.: I never realized that Michelle Pfeiffer was such an attractive woman.
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
There was me...
And so begins the story of little Alex, a teenage punk who (with his three "droogs") go out to have a night of fun at other peoples' expense. The movie is not for everyone; you either love it or you hate it. The movie is rated R for occasional profanity, "ultraviolent" set pieces, and quite a bit of nudity. If you can look beyond these things you will find a very interesting question: If a man cannot choose to be good or evil, is he still a man?
So is the movie just some sick, violent, porno film? Or does it go deeper into the mind than one might expect and leave you thinking? The choice is up to you, so make it a good one.
Mars Attacks! (1996)
Why, little people, was this film ever made?
Completely unfunny and full of graphic violence, this may be one of the worst movies of the 90's. This is a movie that just goes to prove that a great cast doesn't equal a great movie. Its' PG-13 rating is UNDER-rating it's content. The movie should have been rated R and should have been direct-to-video, or not on video at all would be preferred. Waste of time and talent, but what can you expect from a movie based on a pack of bubble gum cards.
A note to the review about yada, yada and Clockwork Orange all rolled into one: PLEASE...don't compare the masterpiece 'Clockwork' to this disaster!
Warrior of the Lost World (1983)
Warrior of the Lost Talent
What do you get when you add Donald Pleasance, a cute girl, Jimmy Carter, and the Paperchase guy? A good movie, right? WRONG! You get an hour and a half of sleep. Although, there is a bright side to the film (surprised?): MegaWeapon!!! If you are a fan of MST3K than you'll love the riffs on this disasterpiece. "Frank, push the button."
A Shot in the Dark (1964)
Classic Clouseau!
This sequel to The Pink Panther is a one man show: Peter Sellers, Peter Sellers, Peter Sellers! The film introduces new characters such as Chief Inspector Dreyfuss and Kato who would, also, star in later "Panther" films. Cloueau is on the case (and off, and on again, and off again...etc.) to find the murderer of the chauffeur of the Ballon Estate. While tracking down the suspect Clouseau runs into trouble every step of the way. The movie is GREAT and is suitable for young audiences, too. Not Rated but has some sexual situations, nothing too harsh.
The Haunting (1999)
Viewers Beware!
James De Bont's latest film is not all the rave it looks to be. Fans of the slasher series Friday the 13th and Halloween will for sure find this no thrill. Although, for the rest of us there are enough laughs to keep the audience entertained. There are some disturbing scenes for a PG-13 film: a bloody eye and a decapitation. The film is low on profanity but uses GOD's name in vain enough times to make up for it (I'm considering this a BAD thing). Watch...if you dare!
Roxanne (1987)
A little too long and sometimes too silly!
As usual Steve Martin pulls off a good performance; he plays a large-nosed fire chief who falls in love with a the lovely Roxanne (Daryl Hannah). The highlight of the film is the bar scene in which Martin makes some classic nose jokes. The film looses momentum after a while but is still watchable. This movie got a PG rating, but I would strongly recommend that the viewing ages be 13 and up due to very strong language.
Muppets from Space (1999)
Not the best muppet film, but still good family fun!
Although not a classic like the Great Muppet Caper and a Muppet Christmas Carol this movie still provides it's audience with occasional laughs, which most of the one liners come from some of the newer characters from the recent Muppets Tonight tv series. Pepe is a riot! The creators of the movie tried to squeaze too many of the muppets into this movie that some of the classic characters aren't but shown but once or twice. The gang broke the usual "G" rating for a "PG" due to mild aggression and silliness.
What About Bob? (1991)
Touchstone brings you another hit!
Murray and Dreyfuss work beautifully together as doctor and patient. Bob Wiley (Murray) is a neurotic, but lovable, character who finds hope and a friendship with Dr. Leo Marvin (Dreyfuss), who is jealous of Bob's new relationship with his family. Rated PG for profanity and mild violence.
Ernest Goes to Jail (1990)
Classic (4 stars out of 5)!
Ernest P. Worrell comes through with his third movie presentation. Jim Varney not only plays Ernest, but doubles as the evil Mr. Nash. From start to finish this movie has some solid laughs and makes a good family film! Rated PG for comic book violence.
Gremlins (1984)
This movie deserves a 'thumbs up'!
With a clever storyline and well crafted animation this horror/comedy makes for an entertaining 1 1/2 hours. There are several cute scenes where you just can't help but laugh, but the dark and vivid violence ruins the chance of a family film. Whether you like it or leave it, this film is a classic!
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
A young adult classic!
Not one of the Python gang's best, but seems to be quite the rave for teenage viewers. There are several laugh-out-loud scenes, but some spots in the film that are brutal and leave you disgusted. If you like scatological humor and are entertained by blood than this is the movie for you. Rated PG for profanity, violence, and sexual suggestions.
