Ame agaru (1999)
A Great piece of Directing, ScreenWriting and Acting
This movie feels like a ballade on a forgotten road... Its rythm flows like magic and holds you to the storyline which enfolds peacefully. Its inner beauty is based on simplicity, on discovering what makes our humanity and on some well chosen bits of humor. There is an allmighty feeling of pleasure that emanates from experiencing this movie where nature is breathtaking or just simply here with you. And, when the movie is over, you feel grateful to have walked this path where love still exists. Such a powerful message upon entering our next millenium.
Julien Donkey-Boy (1999)
Bizarre... but good!
This movie felt quite similar to watching "Freaks" by Todd Browning, expect this is now the 90s. You often feel a bit uneasy at your stomach but also you regret not to be more open to the real world around you, not just the world that you usually see through the media or within your 10 ft parameters. This is also a beautiful movie, once you adjust to the video pixels. Overall, a must see experience for all of its strangeness and humanity.
La double vie de Véronique (1991)
Within the mystery of life...
This movie is my favorite movie of all time. It encompasses all that I believe in life. The unseen, the dreamy, the beauty, the power of believing and the "lightness of being". The imagery is both stunningly beautiful and inventing. The story line is amazing and takes you under its wings to carry you far beyond in places you only dreamt existed. Kievlowski is in my opinion one of the best directors of all time. He has helped the cinema by giving it his "ballade", full of feelings and tender emotions. The casting and acting is top-notch. Also unforgetable is Irene Jacob's performance. She carries the film on her shoulders with near-perfect beauty and grace. I only say "near-perfect" as a compliment, just like the movie is near-perfect as it knows to leave space for life to be and blossom. For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, let yourself go and believe...
Romance (1999)
Expected better
Romance was not a totally "bad" experience, but it was missing a few items to bring it to the level I personally expected. Mostly, there isn't any real progression for any of the characters and neither is it ever mentioned why their respective sexual lives are so "screwed" up. Thereby it leads me to conclude that the movie mirrors its own characters who "cannot open up". However, I still do believe the movie is worth seeing despite a few shortcomings. And I might add, it does deliver more on the "sexual subject" than "Eyes Wide Shut" was publicized to do...
Splendor (1999)
Loved it, Loved it
It was fresh, witty, fun. It was well done, well crafted, and terribly well acted. I've seen many of Greg Araki's movies (who I compared to a Godard of our time as his stories are sharp-edged and on the disturbing/disruptive side) but I have to say that this one is so much more mature, a coming of age. Totally enjoyed my movie experience and related to each of these beautiful youngsters who live life with "a go", without pretension and with eventual responsibility and definite love. A lesson to all. Bravo!
