David Bowie: Serious Moonlight (1984)
I had forgotten how bad the eighties were.
If you're in the mood to see David Bowie (circa early eighties) make a complete ass of himself, looking unbelievably smarmy in leisure suit and a bleached blonde blowdry, with hilariously awful stage production and video toaster-like special effects, this is the film for you.
Boxing Helena (1993)
Ouch.
There are not many films that I can say cause me to feel just complete and utter humiliation for this director, but this is one of them. I guess it was one of those "It seemed like a good idea at the time" kind of situations. Although, this movie would make a great party game, along the line of Showgirls. You would have to drink every time Julian Sands makes an ass of himself, and do a shot every time Helena gets a limb cut off. Granted, you would probably die of alcohol poisoning, but it would be fun while it lasted.
Dahmer (2002)
Perfect.
Heartwrenching. I was completely satisfied with this film - it showed the real Jeffrey Dahmer - the tormented child trying to find love and acceptance (and unfortunately, not going about it in the most healthy way...ahem.) I only wished it went on longer.
Hysterical Blindness (2002)
I expected more from Mira Nair.
After reading what great reviews this film got, I watched it premiere on HBO. Having grown up in the 80's in Northern NJ, I thought I would recognize some familiar characters in this film. And I did.
The hairspray, the cars, the bars, the accents (although not too accurate) were all familiar. But the characters were caricatures - there wasn't much substance there. The film gets a little better towards the end but overall, there's nothing to sink your teeth into. I would recommend Salaam Bombay (a MUCH different film but a film much more representative of Nair's talent.)
L.I.E. (2001)
Bad.
Just ridiculously bad, unfortunately. Most of the film I was unconsciously making these gnarled faces in horror and disgust at what I was seeing; not because of the controversial plot, but just because I saw what they were trying to do (I think) and it just didn't work. The funny thing was, I looked over at my friend beside me and he was making the same faces.
Hard Core Logo (1996)
Elusive Canadian Humor?
Could someone explain to me what's funny/remotely interesting about this film? I don't get it. Maybe it's a Canadian thing.
