Mrs Brown (1997)
superb and fascinating period film
I knew nothing of the history behind this film, but was captivated from beginning to end. A very human and scarred Queen of England is emotionally adrift after her husband's death until a common man from her husband's past comes along and helps her out of her depression. It's a tender story of how the human spirit is broken and can heal through the ministrations of another. A fascinating glimpse of Victorian England w/ excellent acting.
Powder (1995)
extraordinary film about being an outsider
I found this such a great film that it was hard to characterize. It deals w/ a person who doesn't fit in, but desperately wants and tries to. It explores the fear of others, especially of those who are different. A very touching and very psychologically savvy film that will make you think. NOT typical Hollywood fare. Great acting from the main character, whom I'd never heard of.
Men in Love (1990)
wretched film
a frighteningly bad film. You almost hope they're trying to poke fun at themselves, but there are some earnest scenes, too. I kept thinking it'd get better, but, like influenza, it got worse and worse. The plot is thinner than a fortune cookie fortune. It's also really bad soft gay porn. I'd be flabbergasted if anyone w/ a frontal lobe ever enjoyed this film.
Maurice (1987)
Terrific, tender film
This is a masterful adaptation of a great story of two men in Edwardian England struggling w/ their dawning homosexuality and how they each find solutions. As in all Merchant-Ivory productions, the cast is excellent, the writing wonderful, and the filming superb. This is one of my favorite films. I could see it over and over again b/c of its depth and soul.
