Gabbeh (1996)
Beg to object...
I'm giving this film a rather low mark because I think it estheticizes the plight of nomadic peoples in this part of the world. I own a number of the carpets these people make, love them very much, and consequently, much admire the people who make them, but I thought this film was trying to be too poetic and therefore didn't convey the truth of these people's existence. There were, however, some stunning scenes of what that kind of nomadic life can produce.
The Prince of Egypt (1998)
This film was a complete disaster.
The film was a total travesty of history; the filmmakers stated that they tried to respect the "spirit" of the biblical story, but utterly failed. The dialogue was risible, the storyline was ridiculous, and the animation was a disaster. Every character had the same doe-eyed face. This film tried desperately to ape the Disney model, but couldn't deliver the goods. Dreamworks turns into nightmares.
Me Myself I (1999)
If it were not for Rachel Griffiths, this movie would not have been worth seeing.
Rachel Griffiths made this movie worthwhile seeing. Don't miss her in Six Feet Under. The movie itself was extremely silly but it was completely justified by Griffiths's performance, which was magnificent. We all know about stupid, flashback romantic comedies, but Griffiths came through with a stunning performance.
