Dead Man (1995)
Filmed Poetry
18 September 2000
Jim Jarmusch is one of my favorite directors, and Dead Man is probably the greatest work he has ever done. Very rarely does a film come alive with a sense of poetry. The only other film I can compare it to would be Wim Wenders' Wings Of Desire. The film moves like a dream, floating and spinning around you. Neil Young's electric score churns like a ghost train and pushes the film farther. There isn't one performance that is wrong, nor is there ever a false moment. From start to finish this film pulls you into it's dream land, and carries you along on clouds until the finish.

Red (1993)
Great film to watch drunk
14 September 2000
My friend showed this to me a few years ago, and I was floored. The anger filled still images that make up the first half of this film, accompanied by the hilarious sound track was one of the funniest things I have ever seen/heard. The second half was a little too cheap and jokey, but it doesn't really affect the first half which could (and should) be viewed as an entirely separate film. Lawrence Tierney was the perfect choice to play Red. He always looks like he's ready to kill someone and then have a heart attack. This is (Anthrax guitar player) Scott Ian's favorite film. So if you come across this one, pick it up, it will be worth it. And it will come in handy if you have a room full of drunks.

Well at least it was filmed in my neighborhood.

Yeah this is a bad film. Actually anything Marc Singer has done since "V: The Final Battle" has been of the lowest possible quality. Which is too bad because Marc Singer could have become a great character actor. Anyway, this is yet another film about gang violence that knows nothing of it's subject. The only high point is that it was all shot in Eagle Rock, CA (also where Tom Cruise's character from "Days Of Thunder" was from). So if you live in Eagle Rock or have ever spent any time there this film may be very fun to watch and see how the filmmakers have ghetto-ized the town. Other than that there is no good reason to see this movie.

Evolution
3 August 2000
This documentary is something of a pinnacle for Fugazi and Jem Cohen. Cohen has long been artistically involved with Fugazi, and now he has pieced together this documentary. The film jumps around and swirls with the music, getting more choppy and spacey as the band itself becomes more experimental. It is as if the film is evolving with the subject. At times, Instrument can be a long haul, but it is well worth it.

Clerks (2000–2001)
Wow.

After hearing all of the controversy surrounding this show, I knew that I had to see it. The show started a little slow, not bad, just slow, and then it just started rolling. The humor was probably the edgiest I've ever seen on network prime time. Kevin Smith attacked so much about pop culture in his 30 minutes that I was completely in awe. Oh yeah, Judge Reinhold, a forgotten genius, appeared as himself.

Wow.

There is something really funny and really pleasant about this video film. I first saw this when I was a kid, and I will always remember the image of a vegetarian big game hunter blowing away lettuce and tomatoes in the produce section of a supermarket. The songs are great, as are the running gags. Some of it may be a little dated, but it's still pretty good stuff.
