Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)
A fun movie that is much better than the sequel.
AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY is a funny, original parody of every spy movies the 60's. Good comedies are not that frequent these days and this IS a good one. Myers is hilarious. He is incredibly talented when creating characters (DIETER and SIMON the kid in the bath on SATURDAY NIGHT LIFE were some of the best in the tv show) and Austin Powers/Doctor Evil is maybe his best routine ever. Hurley has the kind of rare sex-appeal that we don't see in any current leading ladies today. The sequel is VERY bad, a rehash of gags from this movie and a drop of a few notches in the vulgarity level of the humor.
March or Die (1977)
Great cast AND really good movie
MARCH OR DIE has one impressive cast: Gene Hackman, Terence Hill (in one of his rare movie that you can take seriously), Catherine Deneuve, Max von Sydow, Ian Holm...
Great script that has everything well balanced: humor, action, suspense, drama. It will please those who like good war movies, those who like historical movies, and those who like just plain good movies!
This is the ultimate movie about one of the ultimate elite troop in history: the Légion Étrangère.
Zazie dans le métro (1960)
The best... if you are fluent in french
Raymond Queneau is my favorite writer. He was one of the rare giants of french litterature who could make you really laugh out loud while you were reading one of his classics.
ZAZIE DANS LE MÉTRO was his funniest novel, but if you are not fluent in french, you will miss a lot of the jokes; Queneau loved to play with the language.
Fortunately, Louis Malle has done a good job in adapting the humor of Queneau, translating the novel into a more visual, slapstick, cartoon-like movie. An intelligent comedy that is it's own unique category.
Jing wu ying xiong (1994)
The best martial arts movie ever made?
FIST OF LEGEND has two of the best elements in martial arts movies: Jet Li and Yuen Woo Ping.
Bruce Lee was the pioneer and had more charisma and style, Jackie Chan is more fun and creative, but, for me, Jet Li is the best martial artist in the movie business. He is so good, you believe that he could kick anybody's ass, including Jackie's!
Yuen Woo Ping is a no contest. Nobody is better than him at directing martial art sequences. Will somebody ever top his work on THE MATRIX? I don't think so! Who else could make us believe that Keanu Reeves is the One? It is not surprising to learn that FIST OF LEGEND was one of the major inspiration of the Wachowski brothers. In fact, the only martial arts director who is better than Yuen Woo Ping is Yuen Woo Ping!: the fight scenes in FIST OF LEGEND were the basis for most of the kung fu in THE MATRIX, and even better, there are more where that came from!
So, is FIST OF LEGEND the best kung fu movie ever made? I have to say that it is right there at the top, on the same level with the "other" two best kung fu movie ever made: DRUNKEN MASTER II and ENTER THE DRAGON.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
What a letdown! No originality, no magic, no fun...
The first STAR WARS was maybe the best science-fiction/adventure movie ever done. EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI were pretty O.K. as sequels go. But! PHANTOM MENACE was the worst movie of the year!!! No creativity!: only rehashed ideas from the other films of the series... No magic!: who cared about the characters? JarJar Binx anyone? Anakin Skywalker? (maybe if they had an ACTOR playing him; Jake Llyod is certainly not destined for the oscar)... No fun! No rhythm! No story! Some good actors, but no good acting... There's not really a beginning, and there's not really an end... And, for sure, there is no point!!!
The Rocketeer (1991)
Underrated...this should be one of the best adventure movies!
Dave Stevens created one of the best adventure comic book. It has everything: nazi spies, a Betty Page look-alike, pulp-style action, an interesting time in history, and a guy who fly into trouble with a rocket attached to his back. The movie is not 100% faithful to the comics but at least it has kept the spirit of the characters and the themes of the strip intact. All in all, this is still the best adaptation of a comic book character in films (followed not to far by SUPERMAN).
