Unfaithful (2002)
Not the first time!
Not the first time Connie has been unfaithful! Judging by how `unlike' Charlie looks like his Father ... this wasn't the first time Connie has been unfaithful!
Not knocking the little kid ... but as handsome as Richard Gere and Diane Lane are ... the producers should have cast a better looking kid!
The Lost Weekend (1945)
95 % believable
95 % believable - but why would a woman stay three years with a man who was a habitual drunk!
Also unanswered:
Why no war connection to the male leads? No mention of WW II at all. The end ... unbelievable. There are no quick turnarounds for an alcoholic.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Saw it at $ 1.00 movie house ... still waste of money
Worst yet ... waste of my time!
Gratuituous sex ... gratuitous violence ...
But does not detract from the plot ... because THERE IS NO PLOT!
If you liked "Crash" ... this movie will appeal to you!
Black Robe (1991)
Courage of a different sort
As a retired Christian minister, I have perhaps a different view of the movie than some of the other reviewers.
I felt that Laforgue, the Jesuit Priest, showed amazing courage to undertake his mission under the most difficult of circumstances.
Director Bruce Beresford has addressed the issues of clashing cultures in several of his other films: Driving Miss Daisy, Mr. Johnson for example. And he presents the complexities of culture anew in this film.
I was struck by the absolute beauty of Québec and the film's cinematography.
Back to Laforgue for a moment: here is a protagonist that accomplishes his mission with wisdom, intellegence, prayer, dependence upon his faith, lack of violence, and persverance.
Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)
Why cars have security systems!
This movie is worth viewing! The viewer needs to go into this knowing that this is a low budget, stunt "comedy" along the lines of the Keystone Cops.
Great acting it is NOT!
Great stunts it IS!
I appreciate this movie because Toby Haliki wrote it, produced it, funded it, starred in it, and did his own stunts!
The DVD edition has a nice introduction by his widow! (Toby died in a stunt accident making the sequel to this!)
Have to say ... the original is better than the 2000 edition!
Another thing "fun" about the movie ... the 70's hair styles, 70's clothing, 70's music, 70's muscle cars. All very cool! Aren't we glad we moved onto a new millennium!
I saw this movie back in 1974 when my wife was out of town and I had a guy's night out! Then completely forgot about it until I went to 2000 version with my 18-year-old son! I told him ... the original was better.
Today I bought the original. My wife, my son and I all enjoyed it.
It has comedic elements ... the car wash conclusion for example!
This is a classic ... just like the "yellow" Eleanor (Looks more like pumpkin to me!)... STUNT movie! Enjoy it for what it is and it is worth a look!
As a side ... I used to have a gold 1973 Plymouth Sebring like the blue one featured early in the film. I told my son ... "I used to have a car like that!" ... He had never seen one before!
Titanic (1997)
Man's arrogance ... humankind's tragedy
James Cameron's Titanic, of course, deals with the technologically advanced Titanic and her invincibility. On her first voyage, the captain has her steaming full speed to set a record and thus promote the White Star line's name.
I feel the movie is one of the top 100 movies of all time. Firstly the undertaking of the moviemaking is "titanic" in its own right: the use of submersibles to photograph the wreck thousands of feet down, the massive set that involved building a virtual replica of the great ship.
Secondly I believe it is one of the greats because of the seamless use of movie making technology to bring this great ship to life.
The movie's popularity is found it Cameron's putting a human face on the sinking of this great ship ... the courageous, the cowards ... the wealthy, the paupers.
Its only fault is that it is a bit long. Could have used an intermission! I rank it a "10".
