Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare (1987)
A Time-capsule!
Truly one of the campiest movies I've ever seen. The 80's schlock in this gem is truly unprecedented. This movie is an entertaining ode to the very silliest parts that were the 80's. This movie features the kind of Heavy-Metal-demon-posession aesthetic that a carny that paints the sides of cheap spook houses at county fairs must revel in. This movie truly is so bad it's good.
Fire and Ice (1983)
A novelty of 80's nostalgia!
Why this movie has all but disappeared into obscurity is an absolute crime. "Conan" is perhaps the only Sword and Sorcery movie better. The brutal violence, cool character designs, and good pacing, make this one of the best fantasies around. It is certainly the greatest animated movie aimed at a more adult audience that I have ever seen. This is not similar to Bakshi's usual frenetic style. It's quite a departure for Bakshi, and in my opinion his best work. I hope that this film gets the recognition it deserves.
Get Over It (2001)
What a shock!
This movie took me completely by surprise, I was expecting mediocrity but instead discovered a gem of a film. This well-paced little movie has more going for it than any ten film in recent memory, I dare say it's even better than last year's Bring it On. Martin Short delivers one of the most hilarious performances of the year, and the very attractive Melissa Sage Miller makes a very likeable ex-girlfriend. Shane West as the baddie is ok, if you can get over how annoying the accent gets. Kisrten and Ben are fairly likebale leads. All in all, a great little film that should've gotten more advertisement.
Dungeons & Dragons (2000)
HORRID!
This film consisted of the worst acting known to mankind! Surely this movie is simply a big joke that all the actors were in on, because it is not humanly possible to turn in performances this terrible. I ahve seen better acting in junior high performances! And the directing and script are laughably bad as well. Avoid at all costs!
Gossip (2000)
Not bad at all!
Gossip is a highly stylized romp that thoroughly entertains. The plot twists come fast and furious, which allow the audience barely enough time to set things straight in their heads. The performances are especially great for a young cast. Marsden displays some versatility here that I wasn't too confident he had previously. Highly enjoyable, I recommend it for anyone that survived high school.
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)
Forest Whitaker Rules!
A rare movie. While not filled with action as most would expect, what it is filled with are poignant, subtle moments as this ethereal warrior observes the world around him. It's laced with humor throughout, and gives the film a very tragi-comedy tone. Not for everyone, but it will probably become a cult classic.
The Skulls (2000)
Initiation Blues
I went into this film with very low expectations, due to critics tearing it apart. Yes it's disjointed, yes it's corny, yes it's implausible, and most importantly yes this movie is fun! You won't come out a changed person by any means, but it is a great B-movie thriller! If you don't go into the theatre with a critical mind looking for faults and weaknesses, you'll probably enjoy this movie.
Masters of the Universe (1987)
Skeletor RULES!
While this movie is so incredibly bathed in 80's cheese, it does have it's good points. Frank Langella as Skeletor, delivers one of the most deliciously sinister performances I've ever seen. If for no other reason, watch this fantastic actor deliver a hell-raising performance.
Here on Earth (2000)
surprisingly good!
I don't understand why critics would bash this movie. It's a teen movie that's actually serious, which is a rarity. I'll admit that there are moments that are hugely sappy, but c'mon it's about young love, it's gotta be sappy to be valid. My biggest complaint is Chris Klein. While he was funny in American Pie, he apparently isn't ready for the switch into more dramatic fare yet, he's very uncomfortable looking in some of his "mama stuff". Hartnett and Sobieski on the other hand, demonstrate a remarkable amount of depth and believability, as do the parent's. Although the script is heavily cliched with the lovers spouting off poetry, the actor's make it work. The directing sports some powerful images on the screen. Beautiful cinematography, nice music, great young actors, I was impressed and I'm a jaded critic when it comes to teen movies.
Final Destination (2000)
Shaky at best!
As a lover of teen horror films I've seen a lot in my day. My expectations going into this one were just a little too high I guess. Devon Sawa (while he does exhibit some talent) is particularly weak in this film, as are the other actors. The inability of the actor's to sell the story really hurts this movie. The movie has high concepts, and creative deaths, but it lacks much else.
