October Road (2007–2008)
A decent premise poorly implemented
31 March 2007
Like another contributor, I'll give shows three shots. Unlike that contributor, the third episode sold me that this show was very much not worth it. In fact, I deleted the episode with 8-9 minutes left and deleted it from my recording list. Not all the acting is bad, but everyone manages to deliver at least some lines as if they had never seen them before and with no character interaction. Jay Paulson and Tom Berenger are pretty good, despite having inept lines much of the time. The show is full of poorly-written dialog, irrelevant subplots, anachronisms, generational confusion (20-somethings have world-wisdom and 30-somethings think like adolescents?). On the other hand, if you liked Dawson's Creek, Seventh Heaven and can't miss a minute of American Idol, then you might well enjoy this show, since it seems pitched to that level. If you do enjoy it, and want to see it hang around, you better get your friends to start watching, since its viewership numbers may need some help to see another season.

A shame this didn't sell more
30 September 2006
This movie is a compilation of interviews with fans and participants in the longest-running and most famous intrastate college football rivalry in South Carolina. Because the footage is very balanced and favors neither school, it did not sell in great numbers in SC, since the USC fans don't care about Clemson fans/players/coaches and vice versa.

Although the emphasis is on the symbolism and emotion that the game represents, there is some additional footage of actual game(s). There are many interviews with folks (several no longer living) that are part of the history and intrigue of the rivalry. I suspect there are many fans who will have missed an invaluable experience because of their 'loyalty' to one of the teams (or extreme hatred of the other team). It's a shame, since the film does both sides proud.

heart-wrenching dose of the reality of cancer in children
25 June 2006
Usually when I've seen something this sad, afterward I have a sense of relief, and that my life just isn't so bad. This one was hard to recover from. I'm dumbfounded that some voters gave this 1 or 3, I just can't imagine not being moved to tears by the heartbreak contained in this film. I have to assume these were some of the folks who left before it ended at Sundance.

I believe the purpose of art is to touch someone, to make them think, to make them feel. This does that in the most human of ways. I had second thoughts about whether I was up for this, but it was incredibly captivating. I had the luxury of having this on my DVR, so I could pause to rest and recover as needed, but at no time during the nearly 4 hours did I have thoughts of not watching it in its entirety. It is one of the finest documentaries I've experienced, one I will never forget.

sad sad sad
30 September 2001
I'm a big Ben Stiller fan, but this is awful. I can only suppose he was hoping to build an Austin Powers-like franchise, but the aim is too low and the writing is not nearly clever enough. His dad is a funny man, too, but is miscast and Will Farrell is over the top, even for him. Owen Wilson created the only believable character execution and he and Ben click in their few scenes together. I'd recommend avoiding even the video of this one, which is a real money-waster.

Timecode (2000)
So easy to miss and misinterpret
19 June 2001
Unlike others in this space who complain about Timecode's lack of plot, I felt there was a bit of an excess. After all, this is real-time. Just how many memorable things can occur in 90 or so minutes of any life? Like experiencing any other artistic endeavor, the solution to the puzzle is in trying to understand the vessel as much as its content.

I find this DVD to be the most re-watchable in my collection. I'm sorry there were so many viewers who felt cheated, and hope they'll try again, because they were looking in the wrong places.

There's an awful lot to be found, especially on the additional material provided on the DVD. And by all means, if you are the slightest bit musical, you'll really enjoy getting inside Figgis' head a bit. The differences in Take 1 and Take 15 are extraordinary and show how a fertile, organic process can cause a magnificent metamorphosis. I'd compare Figgis' method to the Dogme movement for its innovation and disruption of boundaries. Again, there's a lot to enjoy, but it just isn't plopped in your lap. Another one not for the feint of smart.

Clumsy, filled with continuity problems and narcoleptic acting
9 June 2001
Sad excuse for movie-making. Sort of poor attempt at Marx Brothers meets Invaders From Mars. An opportunity to cash a check for Duchovny and Moore. Pitched to eighth-grade mindset and cannot be made up for with stunning graphic effects. A notch above Adam Sandler dreck, but only by a one-celled organism.

not for the feint of smart
9 May 2001
Just when you thought there was no new way to experience a film...

Since plot summaries abound here, I'll spare you another.

Thought-provoking, puzzling movies that have high expectations of the audience are rarely in wide release. This movie is tastefully shot, compellingly acted and supremely edited. Despite a few continuity problems, this was the best movie experience I've had in almost 2 years.

Warning: if you enjoy Adam Sandler movies, Kenny G or Touched by an Angel you probably won't want to waste your money on this. If you like fine wine, jazz or chess, there's a very good chance Memento's intriguing experience will be one you'll relish for days.

Another visit to Coeny Island
5 February 2001
O, the joy of going to a movie, exiting, and then immediately wanting to see it again. I've read most of the comments posted here, and can only wonder what would (if anything) bring joy to those who didn't like it.

The idea of someone from Canada or 'up north' saying this was insulting to us southerners is highly amusing. Does anyone think there was a secret society of intelligentsia hiding in rural Mississippi in the first half of the 20th century?

Perhaps time and experience will be kind to the naysayers, whose egos cloud their wisdom. The Coens will be admired for generations to come. Originality and the genius of artistic creation are rarely appreciated while the artist lives. Thank you, Joel and Ethan.

not for Mamet fans
19 January 2001
Uneven, poor attempt at comedy from Mamet. Good cast delivers several 3-4 minute bursts of Mamet magic. For once his wife is among the better performers - does she have to be in everything? Sight gags are unworthy and situational humor is transparently broadcast. Not a stinker, but certainly a major disappointment. However, if you think Adam Sandler is funny - go for it, you'll love it!
