The Omen (1976)
The Omen didn't scare me when I saw it... it scared me AFTER I saw it
*** MINOR SPOILER ***
Yep, that's true. The Omen left me shaking in my bed just after I saw it. I saw it last night on DVD, lights out, volume really loud, just me, myself and I.
The movie seems slow at the beginning, you even start to like Damien, he's cute, adorable, but with a strange, eerie glow in his eyes (a scene is still caught in my mind, when Damien and his mother are in the zoo, watching the giraffees, then they run away, the mother comes from behind, in that moment the kid glimpses to his back, with a curious way of looking, I don't what that really means, either Damien was trying to subliminally say to his mother "Look what I just did, how they fear me", or it was just a goof where the kid was waiting for Lee Remick to hug her...). But all of a sudden you get involved with Gregory Peck's character, Robert Thorn, who finds out his kid is the Antichrist itself. There's where the movie starts playing with our minds, putting fear in our brain, by letting us know that something is about to happen, something horrible will come in the next scene, so when it happens we're scared to death.
I dare to say The Omen is way much better that The Exorcist, 'cause what the audience (myself included) really like is to feel terror, not to see it, and this movie gives you that horrifying feeling, feeling that maybe will go to bed with you, the way it did with me.
La habitación azul (2002)
A great infidelity story
Judging for the posters and trailers on TV, I thought I was gonna see sex, a great story, lots of nudity, sex and even more sex on this film... and I did, sort of. But all this is easily forgotten as the film goes on, 'cause the story is wonderfully told, jumping back and forth in time, but you never miss the present time. The twist the movie takes at the end was quickly catched by my brain, but that was the very minute that happened... I don't know if you understood me, but all this mess I just wrote was to tell you that by no excuse you should miss this movie, it is good to see a good mexican movie, with a great story that, by the way, anybody can be the star, sort of.
Rollerball (2002)
3 good things I have to say about Rollerball
1. Rebecca Romijn-Stamos.
She was the reason I stayed awake throughout the film (here in Mexico the movie was rated "C", kinda R in USA, so I thought there would be a lot of nudity, compliments from Rebecca... dream on!).
2. Jean Reno.
An actor from head to toe, great in his performance, he urgently needs a nomination for an Oscar... obviously not for this movie.
3. The night vision scene.
I love all kinds of experiments in filming, that's why I love Blair Witch Project, so I thought this type of camera gives an eerie, but great feeling to movies. This scene in Rollerball was ok, I personally think it was the best of the film.
That's it. I think I should've listened to my other friend and go see The Musketeer... but that's in the past. I went to see Rollerball, and there's nothing I can do. Wait, another thing. Slipknot was part of the soundtrack and they appeared in the film. THAT WAS GREAT!!!
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
The best movie of the 21st. century
The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring is, by far, the best movie of the current century. I know the 21st. century is wearing diapers, but it is kinda stupid to say that it is the best movie ever, 'cause the last century brought to the silver screen countless masterpieces, which can't be compared to a single movie that needs other two to complete the best fantasy story ever written.
I hope days passes quickly, 'cause I can't sleep right now...
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
Hell of a funny movie
I really can't remember when South Park entered into my life, but I'm sure I don't regret of living that day. The SP series bring to me nothing else than big-ass laughters everytime I have the opportunity of watching an episode. I say "have the opportunity" because the episodes are not broadcasted in Mexico (except in satellite systems). So, when I have that golden opportunity I don't miss the chance and enjoy it as much as I can.
Well, when I knew about South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut, I thought this was the chance of having the whole package of the midly-censored episodes that I have watched, into a monster fully-uncensored movie. It didn't dissapointed me at all. The best of this movie is that they criticize themselves and the censored f-words, mature-rated episodes revolution they created in TV. Of course, another feature that really hooked me into this movie was the songs. I'm not used to watch Disney movies because of the constant interruption of the stories with a lame song. Well, this happens in SP: BL&U, but this is a different way of interruption, because you can laugh your ass while Cartman sings to a bitchy mother, Sadam Hussein claims "he can change" in an arabesque song (and performs a great choreography) and Satan sings in a very melodic song that he wants to come "up here" and live amongst us (Satan, the Prince of Darkness singing a ballad!!!). I'm not denying the movie is slow sometimes, but while it is, you're busy laughing about the last gag. Full of swearing? Yes, but this is what all the SP fans wanted to see. If you're not really into the SP frenzy, try a different kind of movie, but you want to explore another kind of adventures with Cartman, Kyle, Stan & Kenny, this is your movie. Of course, you won't find it in theaters, where I think you can enjoy a lot more, but go rent it. If you have that golden opportunity, don't miss the chance and enjoy it as much as you can.
The Others (2001)
The best movie I've seen this year
"The Others" is, by far, the best movie I've seen this year, and I haven't seen a lot of good movies this year. "Traffic" was awesome, "Pearl Harbor" was good... but "The Others" is the best. I usually go to the movies with my mind packed with everything about the movie I'm about to see. But this didn't happen to me with "The Others". I didn't even know who was in it!!! A friend told me: "It seems to be nice, Nicole Kidman is in it". Well, I gave it a try, and I thank my friend for the tip. It scared me since the very beginning (you'll know why), it captured my attention since the first minute and it didn't let me go. It doesn't, actually. It's still stuck in my head. By the way, I've seen it twice.
I'm not telling what the movie is about, you can find that in the plot summary link. I'm just telling you my comments about it, and my comment is, as I said it earlier, you should give it a try. Don't go to see it with the idea of watching "The Sixth Sense Part II", both movies are different. Don't go with the idea of trying to discover how it's going to end (to my point of view, you'll never find it out). Just go with the idea of getting into it, feel the atmosphere and have a great time. The spooky elements (it's not predictable as you may think), the great acting (the kids and the housemaid are superb in their acting, Oscar material, definitely), a great direction, a smooth photography and the ending sequence (which left all the audience shut) will do the rest. Go see it twice.
