An enjoyable yarn.

I first saw this movie as a kid back in the 70's.It was screened as a saturday morning feature during the easter holidays. In those days it was the only 'repeat' you were likely to get.I can never understand the general disdain shown to it by Dr Who fans. The production values are high and there's plenty to keep you entertained.I think fans are critical of it because of its comical element.Yes it's cheap,ham-acted at times and the special effects not-very-special,but so was the tv series.I love this movie because of,not despite, its cheesiness.

Terry-Thomas at his caddish best!
17 June 2000
I first saw this film about ten years ago and in that time I must have seen it two hundred times. It stands for everything great in British comedy. It tells the story of a young man who always seems to come a cropper in the lifeman stakes. He joins classes for one-upmanship and turns into an arrogant idiot.

Alastair Sim is at his lugrubious best.Terry-Thomas plays the bounder to a tee with some wonderful lines. If I have one gripe it's the casting of Ian Carmichael in the lead role.Leslie Philips would have been much better But that's a personal choice.

Now I'm off to watch it again for the two hundred and first time!

Ninety odd minutes of heaven!

I saw this movie as a kid and had to wait many years to see it again. For some reason British tv channels seem reluctant to repeat it and to this day I still only have a pirate copy. In the 60's the film company Amicus made horror movies to rival Hammer and this film is among the best of them.It centres around a mysterious house where successive occupants meet grisly endings.A Scotland yard detective is sent down to investigate only to meet a macabre death himself. I have to be honest and say that if you're looking to be scared out of your life, look elsewhere. This is a delightful film set in the quaint backdrop of Surrey and has it's fair share of familiar faces. There are some memorable scenes.Jon Pertwee plays a disenchanted horror movie actor who's p***ed off playing in low budget productions. There's an hilarious scene where he unleashes his frustrations on the film crew, telling all concerned what they can do with their movie. If you 've yet to see this film you're very lucky.I've seen it many times and it has given me endless pleasure.

Peter Sellers finest film!
22 May 2000
This 1960 M. Smedley Aston production has everything lovers of classic British comedy could hope for.Sellers plays Dodger Lane,a lag who is having such a cushy time in the clink he couldn't care less whether he gets out or not.'Rooming' with two old chums they plan an unlikely heist of priceless diamonds while still inside. This is probably my favourite Sellers comedy of all time with marvellous performances from all concerned.Star of the show, hands down, has to be Lionel Jeffries as the hard-boiled prison officer 'Crouty' who is hell-bent on making the lads last few days of incarceration as miserable as possible. If you haven't seen this movie you're in for a treat.Forget Inspector Clouseau, this is the definitive Peter Sellers.

The Big Job (1965)
Classic British comedy caper.
19 May 2000
This film about the antics of a group of inept bank robbers is British comedy at its finest. It's Carry-on in everything but name, with regulars such as Sid, Jim Dale and Joan Sims. There are some wonderful performances, but for my money it's Dick Emery who steals the show. I love the part where himself and Sid James have messed up again and are questioned by Jim Dale (the constable) about their antics the previous night. Dick, convinced they've been nobbled, turns to Sid and says "Did you see the look he gave us?It was loaded with handcuffs!"Priceless.

This is what REAL comedy is all about and I'm eternally grateful to messrs Thomas,Rothwell and Rogers for providing us with moments like these we can cherish forever.
